He'll do just fine there. But say he 'struggles' and only puts up 30g... teams will gladly offer a 1st and 2nd for him. It might be a later first in the 20 ish range, but still a 1st. Goal scorers don't grow on trees and he's an elite one. Shown with two 40 goal seasons and a 30g season.

Just even look at the last deadline. Pending UFA Copp got a 1st 2nd and prospect. Toffoli got a 1st picks and prospects. With a full year, they can recoup a 1st and 2nd, even if later in the rounds. Even at the deadline in 24, they can get a 1st + for him.
Oh I agree with you there but in most drafts the difference between the 7th overall pick and a pick in the 20ish range is significant.

It's not a disastrous trade for Ottawa by any means but Dorion should have gotten the conversation with the agent done so that there is no doubt.

Maybe my expectations are too high for managers but for me, if you're trading a 7th overall pick ++ to acquire a star player then you have to make sure that you 'dot all your i's' and 'cross all your t's' and leave nothing to chance and make sure you have some kind of assurance that he's gonna be there long-term.

If Joe gets kane that would be insane lol.

Girard can go play with Jones, send whatever else needs to be sent in terms of futures and it offsets the cap hit so can easily sign a 2C still.

Nichushkin 5.5m
Lehkonen 4.5m
Manson 4.5m
Georgiev 3m
Copp 5m
JJ 800k

Nichushkin - Mack - Rantanen
Landeskog - Copp - Kane
Newhook - Compher - Lehkonen
Cogliano - Meyers - O’Connor

Toews - Makar
Byram - Manson
JJ - EJ

If they want Newhook too then make it happen and run

Lehkonen - Meyers - Compher
Cogliano - Sedlak - O’Connor

I would say in normal years 7-20 is a large jump But 7 this year for 20 in 23... that is a push for me. This class isn't great and 23 looks amazing.

They got a year to get it figured out. In a small market with a great prospect/young player base, this is a solid risk to take. If it blows up, they get a ~20ish pick next year.

If we don't trade for a 2C tonight the next week will be stressful.

They'll want tons of picks for that and we don't have them.
Why would we need to trade for the 2C tonight before it becomes stressful. We have no draft capital in this draft. Any deal that we could make for a 2C would still be possible after tonight.

Yikes.. That Letang contract. Imagine what he was offered from someone else if PEnguins paid that.

Free agency makes GMs go crazy. TOTALLY NUTS.

Kadri 11 million a season, Nuke 9 mil and Kuemper 8million and Bura 8 million.

it wouldn't shock me now.
