Interesting factoid about the recent Quinnipeac championship win for those of us that live/have lived in CT: It was the first time since 1977 two universities from the same state won the NCAA D1 Men's Basketball Championship and the NCAA D1 Men's Hockey Championship in the same year, when Marquette University won the former, and University of Wisconsin-Madison won the latter.

Quinnipiac really has come a long way since I was applying to colleges. It used to have this reputation as a little private just renamed Univ from college for rich snotty Northeasterners who didn't take academics seriously, or blue collar working class kids who were trying to hustle but in a more "traditional" college environment from the city schools in NY.

I visited several times in those days having friends who went there and it wasn't always positive just in terms of the overall student body attitude, and some of the off-kilter general comments made (I'll leave it at that without getting into specifics).

They've built their college athletics program, continue to be recognized as a serious pollster, and overall the technology and facilities which were great when I saw them, seems to have kept up. That's good to hear and I'd love to go back and check out the campus at some point.

Is there any news on Grubbe? @Amazing Kreiderman I know you're quite busy but figured if anyone would know his deal, it's you.

Curious why he hasn't gotten a contract yet and if it's just a formality where they want him to finish his playoffs or one of those darn Sutter Bros is talking trash about the Rangers lol.

His NHL rights expire June 1st. So they still have a few weeks to decide. The Rangers are still in regular contact with him, but nothing concrete about ELC negotiations yet.

I can see them not signing him to sign a better projected prospect available. Rangers should have the roster spot to sign both if they want too..

Didn't that happen last fall?
Well yes it did. Mr. Big Shot just saw Cap Friendly post on Twitter and assumed…

You know what happens when you assume…

Just checked AHL site, shows Boyko assigned to Pack as of 4/10, which is today/Monday

He signed late in camp IIRC correctly and was briefly assigned to Jacksonville (ECHL) before being sent back to juniors.

Yeah I'm not so worried about Sykora coming over next season but I would like for him to make a move to a better European league, preferably the SHL if that's a possibility.
Sykora will not even be 19 until early September
Is Medicine Hat an unlikely option? a step back, after playing with men, in Slovak league?
Could adapt to 68 game season, narrow rinks, western Canada physical game, and facing lots of bigger guys every night...

Drafted 2022, 1 #1 overall by Medicine Hat Tigers in the CHL Import Draft

Going to the WHL is a step backwards. I expect Sýkora to play in Hartford because the Rangers just can't help themselves, but ideally he would develop in the SHL/Allsvenskan like a lot of other players have done over the years, from smaller nations.

Anže Kopitar
Moritz Seider
Dominik Bokk
Marko Kasper
Jakub Vrána
Martin Fehérváry
Kevin Fiala
Artturi Lehkonen
Lars Eller
Mats Zuccarello
Pierre-Édouard Bellemare
David Pastrňák
Michael Raffl

What does Sýkora have to learn in the WHL?

Ciccolini joins Hughes seeking a new team for a 5th season
(or 4th, if his 4-game, injured season '21-22 was considered "red shirt")

I have advocated for a loan to the SHL as well.

With that said, he wouldn't be an overage player in the WHL. He's not currently a guy who is so physically developed that he'd be able to get by just on his physical advantages like an Evgeny Grachev. Even for a guy who has been playing against primarily adults, the WHL would be a reasonable place for a 19-year-old kid to get acclimated to the game over here before stepping into the AHL the next season. Sometimes, particularly for a guy like Sykora who has a solid floor with his defensive game, physical play, and hustle, playing somewhere where he can really light it up offensively, would be a good development step.

I'm not sure Medicine Hat would be the place, but I don't think a WHL stint would be totally crazy.

I don't think the WHL is the right move (especially of the alternative is a pro league where he can get top 6 ice) but we (not you, just the board collectively) need to stop treating the CHL as some sort of boogie man for european prospects.

Here are the potential benefits of playing in the WHL -

- More games
- LOADS of ice time in every situation (and if you want his offensive game to come along, playing more is the best way to do it.)
- adjusting to/tailoring his strengths to the smaller rink as you mentioned
- Playing with an elite player (Gavin McKenna may end up going 1 OA in 3 years.)

His strengths are what they are, they aren't going to be further honed playing on the bigger ice. If you want to bring around the offensive part of his game, in game reps are the BEST way to do it. In that sense, MH is pretty much the ideal spot for that.

I would agree that a quality euro league is probably the best route (better competition, but also better line mates) as long as the minutes are there, but the WHL is probably a better option than going back to the Slovak league (lesser competition, but potentially better linemates (or mate and he'd play with McKenna because it's not like MH is just brimming with talent) and greater opportunity.)

This post is spot on. Agreed 100%. I'm not advocating for a move to the WHL but if we did go that route, I think there's plenty of logic to it.

I think you also hit at it at the end, the but Slovak league kind of sucks. Other than having "adult" players I'm not really sure it has any advantages over the WHL in terms of helping a guy like Sykora develop. Wherever he is, I do not want it to be there.

For what it's worth, there were extensive talks between MH and the Saskatoon Blades to acquire Sýkora's rights in the event the Rangers would assign him to the WHL. If Drury decides to do this, those trade talks could heat up again. MH may not be the specific destination for Sýkora in the WHL.

I'd be pretty happy if Sykora goes the WHL route next season. He is still REALLY young and doesn't even turn 19 until training camps are underway in Juniors. I think getting adjusted to the more physical play and smaller rinks will be good for him. He seems like the type of player that will strive on smaller rinks instead of bigger rinks since he is an aggressive, hard to the net, in your face player.
