if I was a unsigned college player, I don't think I'd want to sign with the Rangers. Dan Girardi is like the last time that worked out? They have not handled these type of players well since. Correct me if I'm wrong.
no team hits homers with too many of those
depending on the UDFA path you're including (college plus Girardi in your post)
since Girardi, some UDFA's who turned pro w NYR, and still having careers as NHL regulars
that come quickly to mind: Pionk, Zucc, Talbot, Georgiev

not sure if there are other teams who have done more

maybe someone with advanced subscriptions to EP or hockey-reference could run a search on UnDrafted players active in NHL over last ~5-7 seasons

Ortmeyer
Girardi
Gilroy
Zuccarello
Talbot
Pionk
Georgiev

They were all successful to varying degrees. There are also several guys like Lettieri or John Gilmour who had limited NHL success but did become successful pros. The Rangers have been pretty successful with the UDFA guys, especially when you consider that the overwhelming majority of those guys never make it beyond the AHL or ECHL.

...guys like Lettieri or John Gilmour ..
semantic, picayune point, but recall
Gilmour had been drafted by Calgary, but then Vierling'ed Tyler-Nanne'd (Hughes'd? Kjellberg'd?)

... maybe i am missing someone, but it seems Nanne maybe only NYR-drafted NCAA player not signed, since Max Campbell in '11? but maybe 3 this summer?

Right, I forgot Gilmour was drafted.

As everyone knows I don't think much of Kjellberg, but he still seems like a decent bet to get a contract. 50/50. We have a lot of defensemen who are impending RFA so they may look to do a refresh. Zech, Emberson, Scanlin, Kalynuk, Hajek. I think they'll keep at least Emberson and Scanlin but the others could be gone. I know Capfriendly says 2024 for him but I'm not so sure.

Ciccolini is mildly interesting, he has always played on a stacked team and his production has never really increased, but he has had injury issues. I think it's very unlikely he gets a deal but you never know.

Hughes is a fine depth player in college, good effort, 200-foot game. I don't think he really profile as much of a pro and I'd be stunned if he received an ELC.

Always into college FAs, but it's hard to evaluate Dartmouth players right now. Their program has fallen through the floor with the retirement of Bob Gaudet.

I saw Dartmouth play SLU live in the fall of 2019 right before Covid. Don't remember Palocsik sticking out in any way but that feels like an eternity ago now.

Big Game Adam Edstrom has 1+1 in 4 SHL playoff games. In his playoff career, he has 12 points in 28 games (.43 PPG). In the regular season, he has 48 points in 189 games (.25 PPG). Big guy, steps up in big games.

As space gets constrained, the big guys can create space for themselves and get to the hard areas of the ice. As much as size doesn't matter, it helps come playoff time.

If we assume Motte is re-signed and Goodrow traded in the offseason, there's a spot to be won potentially at 4C between Vesey and Motte next year, who knows maybe Edstrom is a candidate.

we've reached Conference Finals weekend,
final NCAA pre-tournament weekend

Laba, Kjellberg, Berard, Chmelar, likely Ollas with their seasons on the line

Kampf faces Karpa tonight but both Harvard, Cornell expected to be in tourney
(may be possible that too many upsets could bump Cornell from At-Large bid)

Lamb faces Ciccolini tomorrow but both Gophers, Wolverines expected to be in tourney

this re Berard, Chmelar vs Ollas

Noah Laba is having a fascinating season isn’t he ?
Yes. A lot of people shit all over that pick. Then he goes and has a great freshman season, finishing second on his team in goals and points, and gets picked for a WJC spot which literally no one seemed to see coming.

He's not a high-end guy but he quickly went from JAG status to legitimate prospect pretty quickly.

cant say i shit all over the pick mostly because i didnt know anything about him. and as a general rule i tend to avoid ripping 18 yr old kids apart. but i remember taking a look at his resume and being a bit surprised he was drafted at all.

saw cc for the first time tonight and my main takeaway is holy balls thats a fast hockey team. their forwards were flying all over the ice, denver couldnt carry a puck outta their zone without being pressured and had pucks knocked off their stick so many times. cc was good at turning those into chances, not great scoring touch tho. laba had one 2 on 1 he was gifted a tap in and had his blade wide open so the puck just jumped it. tough to take much away in one game but thought he was solid, was around the puck in the o zone, picked up an assist, no glaring mistakes i caught, skates well, hustles, plays physical...handles are pretty dusty but thats about the only negative. extremely impressed by cc, dont know anything about their coach but thats a guy id be interested in hearing his philosophy.

not at all a fire gallant guy, but as far as keeping some names in mind for the future he'd be on my list be it ahl or nhl.

Yeah that's a good rule, don't rip apart 18 year old kids. More people here ought to follow it! You gotta at least give the kids some time, unless they're Simon Kjellberg.

A lot of people got hung up on him being an overage pick. I pointed out he's barely older than Brody Lamb and a little younger than Jaroslav Chmelar. Got to keep perspective.

Vic Mancini was in that same category. I have no idea what to make of Mancini but the small amount I've seen, he shows promise. Size, skating. I'm not a huge fan of our drafting but I also don't think we just go totally off the board for no reason (except Kjellberg).

He was voted way too low on our prospect poll. I was voting for him 5-6 before whatever he was ranked.

A lot of people look at big production numbers with this idea that if a guy can put up those numbers they have a legit chance of one day becoming a top 6 NHL forward and the reality is very very few of them do. To me when you get into the second, third, fourth rounds of the the draft any forward who can even one day be a bottom 6 NHL player is a big plus. Looking at Laba, good size, came out of the USHL which is a big feeder of players to NCAA teams. He also had over 100 pm's in his final USHL season so there's some aggression to his game. He's not going to be a top 6 NHL player. I think he has a somewhat realistic chance if he can continue to progress to be a bottom 6 NHL player---a somewhat comparable at this point though Laba seems a bit more aggressive is Morgan Barron after his first year at Cornell. Barron is a little bit larger.

CHN app listed Ollas, USCHO app listed other guy, and HockeyEast site concurred

Merrimack is up 1-0 over Lowell

Can confirm it's Borgiel in net and not Ollas. They really do alternate every start, even in the tournament.

Game currently in OT.

6 NCAA guys playing tonight in Conference Finals
NCAA selection is tomorrow

Lamb, Ciccolini, Karpa are locks for the NCAA tourney
below, Mike says Ollas very likely
Laba, Kjellberg win or go home

7th guy Kempf can only wait and hope,
but with 2 top 5 teams(Denver, Q'pac) claiming At-Large bids
and Atlantic a guaranteed bid,
Cornell at ~14th is probably not getting in, even if no other upsets

Season over for Berard, Chmelar, Hughes, Mancini
