In the Champions Hockey League, Edstrom is scoreless in 2 games with 5 SOG and Rogle teammate Tarnstrom has played 1 of 3 games with 1 assist. For TPS, Vaisanen is scoreless in 3 games with 1 SOG.

I doubt they are NHL players in their future

Edström has a real chance and from everything I've read the Rangers are very high on him.

Väisänen did well for himself last season, sticking in the TPS lineup pretty much all year at 18/19. When he fills out he'll have an NHL frame--whether he develops the skill set to match remains to be seen. Obviously he's a huge long shot, but he's still very raw and could take a couple big leaps in the next few years.

Tärnström, I have never really been a fan of, but even he just turned 20. Not unimaginable that he also takes a big jump at some point. He should feature full time for Rögle this year, unless he totally bombs, so we should get a better sense of what kind of upside he may have.

The latter two are definitely a long, long way away from even being considered for an ELC. Edström at least has that in his pocket and an invite to camp. If his skating has improved as much as I've heard it has, he may be a legitimate option in the bottom six in the next year or two.

Tarmo R is a good example of why I'd never make a good NHL scout. I thought he looked quite good at times. And I really didn't think he looked overmatched when he got a few games. I thought he had more potential to find a bottom 6 job in the NHL. Clearly, it came down to play in his own zone because he really wasn't bad at skating, moving the puck, vision. A very similar prospect to Joey Keane in a lot of ways. Just a bummer when these guys don't make it. The truth is, playing in the Euro leagues, in front of those crowds, is such a better playing experience for guys like Tarmo. It's night and day compared to the AHL. It's a shame there isn't some more fluid way for players to develop in Europe and slide into the NHL mid-season. LIke, imagine how much happier Nils Lundkvist or Kravtsov would be if they were allowed to treat their home country teams as the NYR farm team and come up to the big clubs without having to wait entire seasons. Like, I would love it if the Rangers made their official farm team an SHL team. They could have like 3-5 slots they have to fill each season and then the Rangers could have a few windows during the year to call up the players, almost like the transfer windows that have in Euro soccer.

It's just no fun to play in an empty depressing arena in HFD, especially if you were just playing the night before in MSG.
i don’t think you’re wrong. I would bet TR could hold his own and even help a power play in the NHL. Problem for him is that there are lots of guys like that. It’s often just about being in the right situation and getting some breaks. Health and timing.
Which is also why a “trade request” is often just a routine part of the business. Guys need to find their right spot. Agents are just advocating for their guys. It’s not necessarily a bad thing.

What word was used by the scout? Asshole? Prick?
Maybe fartbox? I’m not an insider, just speculating.

What about Graves for Bigras? I mean they couldn’t someone with a little potential, not some ECHL level player. Graves would look good on the Rangers. Should have been given a chance. It is not like he was not worth giving a chance too. Rangers need to improve their NHL scouting. Hunt and Gauthier would be in the AHL in most organizations. Pro scouting is an issue here. Nemeth perfect example. They signed a player that did not fit our team at all.
I think Graves would be a whipping boy were he still a Ranger. Not a bad player but I like how things have worked out with the defensive lineup.

A like this. He's definitely a HUGE longshot but at least he can get a feel of the NHL level so he can see where he is in terms have how much better he needs to get.
Very nice 👍

Yeah, but one thing I wonder about is, how much the organization really have thought it through is — is it worth to bring someone like Edström to camp?

He is a 21 y/o forward who plays for a great SHL team. Given his 6’8 stature he is going to need some time to grow into his body.

For Edström to take the next step in the SHL and become a legit top 3/6 forward for his team, that is a huge challenge. And by all accounts, he has positioned himself great for it.

But how is that affected by us bringing him to NA for a month mid-season? I’ve many times seen how these kids struggles a bit when they return and end up lower in the hiarchy than they seemed destined to be at the start of the season. It’s kind of like Chytil positioning himself to be a No 2 C in the NY, he comes in and seem to hold the position, it’s not great if he has to go to Czech Rep for military duty for 6 weeks or whatever in November.

We have in the past seen this organization make decisions based on “how it should be” in the eyes of someone that played goalie 52 years ago in the NHL and then never worked for a hockey team up until a few years ago when he was put in a board room. In practice, this was to little help when reality was different.

We own the right to play Edström in hockey games. What is best for his ability to play hockey, for his career, is best for us. A 6’8 forward that can take a top line spot in the SHL, that is huge for him. Could really propel his game further. From my POV it’s far from a given that he takes this step, and I am hyped that he has positioned himself to do so. I wouldn’t mess with that. What do we win by bringing him to camp for what 4-6 weeks?
Fair question but I think coming over for training camp and then going back home is only going to be good for his development. It’s a lot different from, say, bringing a young guy over and leaving him hung out to dry, so to speak, for a whole season.

if this had been mentioned before, i missed it
don't see that name on the roster posted at NYR site

Vince mentions that undrafted Sam Alfano [ 18-year-old OHL F. 6'4" ]is skating with the group today

any other invites been metioned?

Wasn't listed on the roster and hadn't seen it elsewhere. Good catch.

I watched a good bit of the OHL last year and don't remember this guy.

I was only speaking to our trades with Carolina, not anything larger than that.

Graves for Bigras ended up a bad trade. I supported it at the time as Graves looked like he had regressed and had no future here. Obviously that's wasn't the case and he blossomed with a change of scenery. You win some you lose some. We turned Spooner into Strome. Ryan Haggerty became Antti Raanta. It happens.

I’ve kind of categorized Ryan Graves as someone who is a good example of how a kid — besides doing his part — also needs a shot. I thought Graves was a legit NHL prospect when he was here, while of course not having a ton of potential, but he had McD, Staal, Skjei, Holden and Smith ahead of him as at least LHS defensemen on the roster. Sometimes we say like, well if the kid is good enough he will play because Staal/Holden/Smith sucked anyone can see that etc etc etc. But that don’t really apply to the more depth prospects — which still can be really valuable, especially in relation to the Cap. Those guys wouldn’t have held a KAM or Fox outside the roster, but Graves needed a good shot.

Maggio is one tough hombre though. I mean in a pretty long fight he knocked out long time NHL enforcer and like 6'5''monster Brian McGrattan cold a few years back and McGrattan had been teeing off on him for a while when he did it.

I had hopes for him when drafted. I wonder why he couldn’t even be a 7th dman in the NHL

Maggio never could skate and he also hurt his knee when he was a teen. Just wasn't going to work. As a pro he basically became a full time goon. He was pretty good at it IIRC, but he didn't really have a future beyond that role at the AHL level, because he couldn't keep up and couldn't do anything else.
