Thought was interesting that when Army was asked whether he wanted ROR back next year he said basically “Ryan and I have talked and those conversations will stay private but he knows how I feel about him”. I took that as he will be dealt and we don’t want to resign him this summer.

I noted that as well - I think he’ll be dealt, but I also think DA and ROR have talked about a trade and re-sign this off-season.

If we end up with 3 - 1sts, i hope we end up as doing as well and 2007 with Perron, Eller and Cole. Actually, I hope we do better with a higher pick.

If I recall correctly, the widely repeated rumor was that the Blues offered all three first rounders, Jackman, and more to Chicago so they could pick Patty Kane. And when they couldn't trade up to grab Voracek, instead, that's when they traded back and took Eller. That was a weak-ass draft, though, and getting Perron so late was a coup. If this draft is even in the neighborhood of how deep it's supposed to be, they have a really good shot at doing better than they did in 2007.

Please just no equivalent of trading away the ability to draft Couture for Eller and spare change.
I very specifically remember in the lead up to 2007 coveting Couture ... this was right around the time I was having a hard time believing you about Brett Sonne, but you were right

It probably goes without saying, but the trade of Tarasenko and Mikkola removes any cap issues this team was going to face if Scandella is able to return to the team this year. I have to say, I'm interested in seeing how the D looks with Scandella. He's been written off as useless by a huge chunk of the fanbase, but his absence this year is the biggest difference between the D last year and this year. It will be interesting to see if his return moves the needle at all. He's no savior, but I do think he's underrated.

Anyway, here's the cap situation if everyone gets healthy and we try to minimize waiver risk:

Forward group costs $37.925M.: ROR, Schenn, Buch, Saad, Thomas, Kyrou, Barby, Blais, Acciari, Walker, Torpo, Brown, and one of Leivo/Pitlick

D costs $29.2375M: Parayko, Faulk, Krug, Leddy, Scandella, Bortz, Rosen, and Perunovich

G costs $7.25M: Binner/Greiss

That's $74.4125M on the 23 man roster. We're carrying $1.1M in bonus carryover from last year and we retained $3.725M on Tarasenko. So all in, we're looking at $79.2625M against the cap to carry a 23 man roster with no injury relief. Let's assume that Greiss hits his 20 start bonus and we want to make sure that we put it on this year's cap. That puts us to $79.5125M.

All of this means that as we stand right now, we functionally have just shy of $3M in cap space that we can take on as part of trades. Now, this number isn't spot on since the cap is a daily calculation and we haven't been banking space all year. But it illustrates that we can take on a bad (expiring) contract as part of a deal to maximize a return. We're going to have to retain in any ROR trade, but we might not have to retain on Barby. That means that we could also potentially be the 3rd party of a trade that requires double retention.

A critique we shared was the Blues in 21-22 had elite special teams and promptly lost a huge PP asset and the best PKer before the season.

You probably know this without looking, refresh us on the rules for retention, is it max of three contracts per season ... ?

Yup. You can retain on 3 contracts at any given time. At the moment, Tarasenko is the only contract we are retaining salary on. A ROR trade will make it 2, leaving us with one slot to either retain on Barby to really maximize his return or to get into the 'we'll eat some of that money to make a trade work you guys if someone gives us X' marketplace.

My gut tells me that retaining on Barby is likely the best way to maximize that retention slot. Retaining 50% on Barby brings his AAV to $1.125M for the receiving team. Even if he is replacing a guy making league minimum on their roster, the receiving team would only need to come up with an extra $375k in space. That opens up a lot of potential partners.

Oh man, Sonne and Gawdin are the classic examples of why I'll never be excited about an over-ager having a breakout season. If they jump in production in their D+1 or maybe their D+2 seasons, then I'll notice and it'll peak my interest, more so their D+1.

Take Tucker as an example, he's never going to be an offensive defenseman, but in his D+1 season, his production sky rocketed, and the next year he was just over a ppg. It's less about what they are able to do at the next level, but once they hit a point where they are the oldest guys out there, they need to dominate to have a real future.

I watched Gawdin in his D+1 a bunch of games, and actually of all the prospects in recent memory the one I had legitimately disappointed hopes was Adam Musil. That guy was out there just wrecking shop in juniors and playing like prime David Backes. And then he faded into bolivian ...

I do not recall that specific memory.

What I do recall is that one time you and I ran into a crazy guy who was convinced the pope had sent his Jesuit assassins to take him out. Good times.

Yeah, I really thought he had a chance of becoming a Jay McClement. It's another reason why I've never been high on Dylan Peterson either. Even if someone is projected to be a defensive NHL forward, they still need to have enough skill to be one of the top scorers on their junior/college team.

And kind of to those points, while I like a lot of the mid/late round defensive prospects that we have, I also accept that most of the ones I like won't ever pan out, and we'll be lucky if they can simply become decent 3rd pair guys that can play for a few years.

i still cant believe mikkola is gone

THIS IS AWESOME!

Knowing what I know now in 2023, I wish I could go back in time and make Army pick Pietro/Faulk over Parayko/Faulk.
How about all 3 and instead you remove Krug and Binner's contract. That alone gets you cap space for all 3.

Parayko is not a legit #1 but thrived with JBO on the second pair because thats what he is.

You just gave me a flashback to an old MTV promo with the greasy haired cab driver talking to different people he picks up. Once he was raving about the “preview“ for Sabotage by the Beastie Boys. “It looks like a hell of a show!”

But once he picks up a comedian (Randy something, with big glasses) who is narrating a story that begins to happen in real time about a guy creeping up on him. As Randy realizes what’s happening, he changes the narration so the would-be mugger “slowly backs up, turns around and walks very far away…to Bolivia!”

Jimmy The Cab Driver! Donal Logue portrayed him. Can’t remember Randy’s face though. That was great stuff. I still reference the “skit” where he states his cab is a Time Machine because the road in front of him is the future, he’s currently in the present while he’s driving and the past is in his rear view mirror. Silly I know but still cracks me up. He also co-hosted 120 Minutes one night with Greg Dulli of the Afghan Whigs.

My name is Andy and I had fun in the 90s.
