I'm glad Walker made it. He seems like a guy who has always answered the bell in his call-ups, but never seems to get management to see him as having a long-term future in the NHL due to his size. He's fun to root for.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Leivo has to offer.

Hopefully this means Toropchenko is close to being ready to play. I thought the projections were that it would be several weeks more. Good for him. He's worked his ass off to make himself into an NHL player.

Sounding like toro may be ready before brown.

Worth noting that Scandella and Perunovich are both on LTIR and the way we structured the moves gives us $1.66M in cap space to utilize while those two are on LTIR. That gives us much more call-up breathing room than we had last year and provides some flexibility for a deadline addition (assuming Scandella is out for the entire season).

Unless someone else is on ltir (or season goes south and we deal off expiring guys) this basically means Scandella is out all (regular) season. Going to be near impossible to activate him until playoffs. But worked out for Kucherov in Tampa so maybe he can come back and lead us to Cup.

Scandella > Kucherov 😜

But yes, even though the rules dictate that a player must be activated once healthy, the math dictates that Scandella’s going to have to be classified as injured until the playoffs start. They’d have to trade someone away to have the Cap room to activate Scandella mid-season now.

It's actually not too difficult to add him back onto the roster. We would need to shed $973k to activate him. You can accomplish that be either running a 22 man roster (which means sending down the two cheapest players) or by moving Mikkola. There are a few other ways to do it, but those are the two most obvious.

And moving Mikkola is a plausible scenario. We only signed him to a 1 year deal and when it expires, he'll be a UFA. Maybe he's still part of the future, but he only received a contract that will be easy to move or simply walk away from.

Simply waiving him would ensure that we clear enough space to bring back Scandella. We'd save $1M by burying him in the AHL if he cleared waivers, which is just enough to bring back Scandella. I think he would be claimed, but we don't even need to worry about getting stuck with him and not being able to bring back Scandella. If we want to plug in Scandella over Mikkola and are comfortable losing Mikkola, we can do so.

Lets not get too carried away, I'll settle for Scandella = Kucherov.

Looks like Sanheim will be off the market. Nearing an extension with the flyers

So Toropchenko is apparently 100% and going to be in the lineup tomorrow, per the beat reporters on Twitter.

Lol that’s crazy impressive. Makes me want to root even harder for him.

Yep, and he's going to be Neighbour's biggest competition for that 3rd line spot. Torpo was moved up in the lineup in the playoffs because he's already an impact player. Will be interesting to see how that plays out.

No, we were just that banged up, he had 2 points in 28 playoff games and 2 points in 12 playoff games. He's not a threat to anyone in the top 9 with a healthy lineup. Scoring has never really been a part of his game either.

There's more to the game than scoring though. Torpo brings size, speed, and physicality every shift, and coaches will integrate that higher up in the lineup when needed. The 2012 LA Kings were especially good at this utilizing guys like Jordan Nolan and Dwight King with more skilled guys. If Neighbours isn't ready this year, Torpo will be a candidate to step up and take that spot on the 3rd line.

Toropchenko is Cam Janssen in Logan Brown's body. I'd be shocked if he could get more than 10 points in an NHL season.

That's not a good comparison at all. Cam Janssen was a pure enforcer in the NHL. Torpo can do a whole lot more than that. I'm down to make a bet with you about Torpo's point production this year.

Looks like it’s not 100% but I bet he plays.

Good to have him healthy but also feel somewhat bad for Leivo.

Wanna make a bet on that?
That's true for King, not Nolan. And King had a much better scoring record coming up than Toropchenko has had.

I think Toropchenko was really good last season, and I'm not arguing that points are everything, but to be a top 9 player, you have to score some amount of points.

If Neighbours doesn't take that next step this year and gets sent to the AHL, who else would take that last top 9 spot?

Brown, Walker, Leivo are all guys I'd give a chance to first because their scoring upside is higher. Toropchenko is perfectly designed for a 4th line role. Maybe in time, he develops more of a scoring streak like Barbie did.
