Being overpaid doesn't mean he just plain sucks though.
Didn’t say he sucked. Said he couldn’t defend.

Personally I think he’s a perfectly good top four guy, but not a legit #1, and the fact the Oilers don’t really have a reliable shutdown guy to pair with him is very problematic.

Oiler dmen will always look bad because their forwards aren't backchecking properly (and that starts at the very top).

Also he plays with Cody Ceci.

Found this interesting bit of information:

[...] the team put Zegras in a position to succeed that not many rookies get. This past season, Zegras started in the offensive zone on 72.4 percent of his shifts. That 72.4 percent was the fourth highest among all forwards this season.

Damn.

You forgetting St. Louis and Minnesota here?
Minnesota doesn't worry me at all the next few years, not with that absolutely devastating buyout penalty like a millstone around their neck. They still have Kaprizov, and it looks like Boldy could be a problem, but even with a couple of good ELCs on their roster they won't have the depth to compete at the highest levels thanks to Suter and Parise. And that defense gets older every year, too.

You can't blame Nurse's inability to defend because forwards don't backcheck properly. Cody Ceci looked just fine defending on the Oilers, as did Brett Kulak.

Darnell Nurse is a very flawed offensive defensemen who has a low hockey IQ. He can't defend.

Yup... They have $13M in dead cap space this year and then $15M for the next 2 years after that. They're the furthest thing from a worry at this point.

He’s Phaneuf without the pretentious cocky attitude. People think he’s a good defender because he occasionally makes a big hit and can be mean along the boards. He has all the physical tools, but not the hockey sense to put it altogether.

Nurse could barely pivot during the playoffs due to his injury. I think how bad he looked against us in the WCF is affecting people's opinions of him.

I love the fact that they finally have a superstar that they've been lacking since the Gaborik era, promising prospects, and solid depth, but they're still in no mans land due to all the dead cap space. They have one year of being a contender in 2025-26 before Kaprizov bolts.

Yep. Kaprizov has 4 years left under contract and the next 3 they are unable to compete because of the cap penalty.

I'd seriously consider to trade him for an insane package if I were them. He'd return such a haul. Sometimes doing the right thing really sucks and this is one of those times.

Imagine the value of trading him at 50% retained for the next 4 years. With the right dancing partner I think the Wild could win the cup directly because of that trade, like the Nords/Avs did with the Lindros trade.

Seeing some of the comments in this thread, I guess I’ll never mention I work in Law Enforcement again.
I wouldn't worry about it, it's not like you work a political call center doing spam calls at 6:30 in the evening or anything.
Interesting question. I'm inclined to say yes. I think Campbell is better than Binnington. And I only bring that up as I think St. Louis is the only other team with a legitimate claim for second best in the WC. McDavid scares the hell out of me and Draisaitl is a warrior. What he did on one ankle was incredible.

Thankfully they have no cap space or depth. And the defense is...woof.
Question for you...Bo for Drai straight up. Gives the Avs the best 2C in the league hands down but gives the Oils a legit young top pairing D and frees them of a lot of cap space temporarily. Who says no? Drai is the only guy in the NHL I think I would be willing to trade Bo for. That's how highly I think of him...but I'd probably do this...but I think Edmonton would want more which I would not be inclined to add.
Neither is Georgiev/Francouz
The Avs are so good we stash our playoff-undefeated goalie neatly away as the backup. It might not be scary but, it'll get the job done.

That’s not how Minny operates though. Don’t you remember the Gabby years. Put all your stock in one player and cross your fingers!

I love Bo. But that'd be a massive win for us.

The Avs would take that trade and run away laughing. And I'm one of Bo's biggest fans.

We always speculate about getting a huge haul for a star player, but how often does that really happen? Not in the salary cap era I think.
