Am I crazy for thinking Seattle over performs next year and makes the playoffs? I think Grub will rebound to at least a passable starter, Burky will have an excellent first season besides the rookies, their pending UFAs will all perform strongly, and with how bad the pacific is I could see them sneaking in that #3 or WC spot.
Very much a trendy darkhorse.

I like the first line that was posted. Although, I suspect they'll rotate Eberle onto his Beniers wing when Burakovsky has his dry spells.

Huberdeau for 8x10.5M seems way too much, like several millions. He is 29 years old too.

Just like MacK, Hubi will age perfectly into his mid to late 30s.
Mack will start his 8-year contract 3 years younger though. That's a blessing.

Several million too much? He put up 346 points in his last 286 games. He's basically been a 95pt guy for the last 4 season.
So you're saying that Calgary is paying him for the points that he scored in Florida?

I mean were they supposed to offer him an ELC because he's scored no points in CGY?
If you believe that he'll be that good until age 34 then you offer him 10.5M for 4 years. You may stretch it to 8-years but with a lower AAV to make up for the last 4 shitty years. When you pay him for age 34-35-36-37 the money that he deserved at 24-25-26-27 you run into big trouble.

Someone on the main board said that 8 year contracts are bad for hockey and I agree. Should max at 5 or 6 years for UFA's.

Huberdeau deal means Mackinnon is getting 12 mill min or NHLPA going be on his ass
Should have signed him earlier. Sakic looked optimistic to do it quickly when asked about it at the draft. If it takes that long that likely means that they aren't on the same page.

2 years younger.... Hubi is a 93 and MacK is a 95. Just that MacK is a Sept birthday and Hubi is a June is currently giving the illusion of 3 years. MacK's 8 year deal will take him through his age 35 season. Hubi's deal will take him through his age 37 season. It certainly helps MacK's will come earlier, but typically, both deals will encapsulate a lot of the drop off in level of play.

I'm fine with UFA deals ending at 35.

It will be interesting to see how Mack adapts to the game when he starts losing his explosiveness but the fact that he's in top physical shape and he's very close to Crosby gives me hope.

I’m curious on MacK… physical tools always degrade, no matter how much they train just a matter of when. Players that tend to age the best are players with high hockey IQ. IMO MacK needs to show that more. For Hubi, the Flames might be okay as he is one of the headier players in the NHL. His defense will never be there, but he makes his living in the offensive zone with his mind first and foremost. I still think that deal ages poorly though.

Yeah, Hubie's game isn't really predicated on speed, certainly not power, it's skill and hockey IQ. If anyone's game is going to age well, it'll be his. Will it? I have no idea. If they get a reasonably good three or four years out of him they likely won't care how the rest of that contract ages.

And there was no alternative. If you lowballed him he would've just hit the open market and gotten an 7-year deal somewhere else. I'm not necessarily saying this was the right move but Treliving had two choices--sign Huberdeau long-term, or trade him at the deadline. There was no in between.

All big UFA deals end poorly, that's not some big revelation. What I don't like about the deal for Calgary is that this is a "going for it" move with an otherwise average team. When the Avs sign MacK to an 8 year deal, it will be good for the first 3-4 years of the deal only, and then the team is going to suck regardless of whether it was a 4 year deal or and 8 year deal. But at least we have a Cup contender team for a while longer, Calgary just signed a deal for a 3-4 year Cup window that isn't really there.

He'd need 12M X 7 to match that 84M contract, I highly doubt that any team would give him that AAV.

They knew that Triveling had no choice and they asked for the reported Gaudreau offer, which was the fair thing to do I guess. If Triveling was willing to give that money to Johnny why not give it to Huberdeau? Similar players, need to save face, easy negotiation.

Triveling knows that he likely won't be the GM for the 2nd half of this contract anyway.

That guy would solve the Avs current goaltending problem.
Too late
