I think that argument could be made, but Montreal could easily trade to 3 or 4 and still have a good shot at Wright. Or take a risk on Gautier. New Jersey getting leapfrogged could ruin their shot at Slaf
GM's trying to out-galaxybrain each other again, huh?

Huh. It's funny. Maurice left the team because he was burnt out. Trotz turns them down because he's burnt out. Bowness leaves Dallas because he's burnt out, and now he's going to coach the Jets. What a weird series of events.

Also, this might be the most coaching carousel move of all time. Think of all the promising young coaches and great assistant coaches out there ready for their shot at being a head coach, and instead you go with a 67 year old who just a few weeks ago left a job either because he was burnt out or because his team didn't want him any more (or maybe both).

When the rumours were Trotz I was genuinely concerned that the Jets were going to give the Avs some trouble in years to come. Now I'm not worried. Mediocrity continues.

Hertl must be kicking himself for not going UFA and/or not getting traded at the deadline
San Jose is a really interesting situation. I'm fascinated about what they're going to do. Their writing on the Athletic laid out a bunch of different realistic scenarios - everything from going for it to retooling to a total blowup. Now they have no GM and no coaching staff. Pure uncertainty - it's what makes the offseason fun.

Montreal isn't fooling anyone. They are drafting Shane Wright.
Since they are drafting at home (big show) it's not worth it to downgrade their 1st pick for a 3rd rounder.

It's been widely reported lately that Hughes has been aggressively calling everyone to get another top 10 pick. If he can land another one he may draft Slaf at #1 though and get a center with the other pick.

Pretty much... Slaf is really the only guy that scouts feel has elite upside in this draft. Gauthier has his fans (I'm among them), but that is far less of a consensus. The rest of the top of the draft looks like low end 1st liners, high end 2nd liners and 2/3D at best. This is when GMs tend to make bigger mistakes.

What's your opinion on Cooley?

More Keller than Hughes... still a damn good prospect. Worry about him making it as a center in the NHL, but he has a better shot than Keller did. Hard working kid though with a lot to like about his game. He's in the 4-7 range for me.

If you guys think hiring "the same old guys" is a thing in the NHL take a peek at English football lol. How some of those managers keep getting jobs is beyond me...

I just don't understand why some of these teams refuse to try out a new coach outside the league. I understand that Panthers don't want to have Brunette learn on the job, they wanted an established coach (whether or not Maurice is a good coach is a different thing). But teams like Philly hirin Torts, Winnipeg hiring Bowness, Stars hiring DeBoer... Why? You are not contenders, you might make the playoffs but it's not a guarantee. Might as well try some new blood.

IDK where else to put this.

Very interesting concept.

Couldn’t pass this one up. Improvements in goalie equipment incl masks is of interest to me. So watched this pitch. No brainer tech. Like, thinner metal mask… for sure.

But also what got my attention… was about to click out when I saw what the fellow had in the background. No, not the air frame. But am pretty certain that is a Saab 95 (made from jets as Saab expressed in their lore). If that is his choice of auto, whether he restored it or he just is invested in the Saab technology, history, whatevs, that got my attention. Smart dude. Curious about him now.

Have had 9 Saabs. Good company.

(in case anyone is counting, 64 days left to Army football)
