The NHL and hockey culture in general is going to be forced to move into the 21st century. Too many reports coming out of the woodshed for Bettman to sweep it under the rug.

Nothing is going to change. Hockey has been this way forever and it will continue to be this way unfortunately.

Does anyone seriously expect punishment for the individuals involved in the Hockey Canada sexual assault? I don't. Anyone expect anything of this with Katz? I don't.

With time people will forget and move on.

This stuff happens in every league, it’s not just the NHL.

If you guys take a minute to read the story you'll see that it has nothing to do with hockey or hockey culture (unlike the team Canada stuff).

The incident itself doesn't have to do with hockey, but it does add fuel to the fire. Between the Blackhawks sexual assault scandal/coverup, Team Canada rape accusations, and Katz paying an underage girl for sex it'll be hard to say that Hockey doesn't have a problem.

Sure but Katz being who he is and doing what he does isn’t really in any way a product of hockey or hockey culture. I file this more in the “billionaires are scum” category than “hockey culture problems” category. Now obviously having a guy like this as an owner is not a good look and the trickle down effects of who he hires and what he accepts can’t possibly be good for hockey culture so hopefully the league can get rid of him

Cinci has gotten a lot better in the last decade… still has a long ways to go, but not what it was 20-30 years ago. Columbus is light years ahead of Cinci.

Now Cleveland… it is still pretty bad. There are some parts that are trying and it will be a city that becomes a destination at some point… but we’re decades away.

Also speaking of Columbus… they are switching to blue pants only on the road. I remember a debate on there actually being a rule or not on this for teams… there isn’t.
Youngstown. Now that’s a town haha

FFS. Why underaged with these guys i'll never understand it.
Maybe i'm being naive, but I feel like billionaires like Katz don't give a shit about age, they just see something they want and pay for it because they know there are very little to no consequences. I'd bet it's not so much about the age but more about the attractiveness/innocence and she just happened to be 17, instead of 18-20. Doesn't make it any better though.

I was more surprised by Brady Tkachuk signing a long term deal with Sens than I was with finding out Matthew Tkachuk had not interest in signing a long term deal with Flames.

Tkachuk not signing with the Flames was always going to happen. No surprises there. I'm just glad he was honest with them so they can do something about it although I have a strong suspicion that the way Gaudreau left had something to do with it. IMO he didn't want to string them along and anger the fans even more.

This Calgary thing just sheds light on how difficult it is for a Canadian franchise to stay competitive. This team would have Fox, Kadri, Gaudreau and Tkachuk if any of them just wanted to play there.

Winnipeg is next in line with everyone wanting out...and they are in even deeper shit because it's an even less attractive destination. Good f***ing luck.

Nonsense. Kadri is Canadian and wanted to stay in Toronto of all markets. He rejected a trade because he wanted to stay a Leaf, not because of Calgary.

Gaudreau easily could have done what Fox did but he didn't. He signed with Calgary and played there for 8 years. It was his right to leave as a UFA.

Tkachuk is a random, one-off situation. EVERYONE has known that guy wants out the second he can in order to get to the States and most likely St. Louis.

The Oilers have two of the best players in the world. How come they haven't asked out? How come Matthews, Marner, and Nylander haven't asked out? Pettersson, Horvat, and Hughes? Scheifele, Wheeler, Hellebuyck?

You don't see people saying this about the Islanders after Tavares left. This is a one-off for Calgary.

Calgary is actually a pretty nice city and significantly better than some US cities, but if you’re an American, playing and living in Canada in general just can’t seem very appealing. And then Russians all seem to want to live in big cities. I haven’t checked the numbers but it seems less difficult for Canadian teams to keep Scandinavians than Americans and Russians

This seems like a willfully contrarian take
- a bunch of those guys are Canadians, so the Fox, Gaudreau, Tkachuk parallels don’t translate
- a bunch of these examples are Toronto related, and living in Toronto is more similar to living in a major US metro than it is to the rest of Canada
- as mentioned in my last post, Canada seems an easier sell to Scandinavians. Maybe the weather doesn’t turn them off or maybe they find the culture and social policy more similar to home, idk
- Wheeler, Helle, Stastny, etc are interesting examples in Winnipeg but there’s also been a number of people who asked to leave Winnipeg

Obviously its not an impossible deck to manage and Canadian teams are mostly hampered by poor management and overactive ownership, but someone posted the numbers on the main board and the rate of high end US free agents signing in Canada is pretty low compared to the opposite situation. And we all know most of the Russian stars want to play in major US metros

Toronto and Vancouver have no excuse not to be good since players that wont consider the rest of Canada might still consider them. But I have a hard time seeing the prairie teams or the Sens build long term contenders unless they somehow find a major edge in scouting and win with primarily young, team controlled players.

As sad as it is for me to say, its also why QC should never get another team. Between the size of the market, the weather, the language barrier there’s just no way they’re going to succeed in this modern era of the NHL
