He plays mostly wing in Montreal. They have been trying him at C recently because of the Monahan injury and they are trying to get 2 lines going. Didn't work, it's pretty clear he's not a center.

Important to note that Suzuki and Caufield suffer offensively quite a bit when Dach isn't on their line. He's an important player for them.

There was chatter about moving him to center prior and he's spent the last couple (few?) weeks at center. I agree he isn't a center, but teams seem to be obsessed with putting him there. Has happened everywhere he has played. Kid is simply a wing.

I agree he is important for them. I'm not at all saying he is a bad player, I've never said that about him. He's a victim of expectations. When players fail to live up to them, especially as a 'prototype big-bodied' center, teams tend to get frustrated and give up. The team that accepts him 'just' being a solid top line wing, will end up very happy. As long as teams are trying to force him at center, they are going to be unhappy.

They are realizing that.

Here's what happened...at the last draft Montreal needed a 2C but weren't sold on Wright. They decided to trade for Dach so they'd have their 2C of the future and could draft what they thought was the best player available in Slaf.

The plan was Slaf on the wing long term with Suzuki and Caufield and Dach at 2C. Now Dach can't play C and he's probably going to play in Slaf's spot for the next several years.

Plan = ruined.

If that really was the plan, whoever came up with the plan should be fired lol you don't watch a guy struggle at centre and think "you know, if he's with OUR organization he can play centre" and completely botch the player's strengths.

They still could have taken Wright and probably should have in the grand scheme of things so they'd be loaded on the wings and at 1/2 centre for the future.

Meh. He was still very young (21), especially for a big center. Plus he was playing in Chicago, plus he was slowed down by a big injury. Plenty of reasons to bet on the guy.

I fully understand why teams bet on him, but to me it was very clear during his draft year that he wasn't a center. I'm pretty sure I ranted on that more than a few times. Team scouts who get paid to evaluate this full time should have been able to see it too. It was clear as day to me. Reminds me of Dylan Strome where while he was (and is) a center, you could see from a mile away he was going to be a disappointment for any team that drafted him and they'd give up on him early... not because he isn't a capable player, but because he couldn't live up to expectations. If a team had drafted Strome in the 20s and expected him to just be a flawed 2C... he would have been a wildly successful pick. Not a building block guy, and you'd still look to replace him at 2C yearly... but a stopgap guy who can play in the NHL.

Once upon a time Dach was a lot more highly regarded than Dylan Cozens was he not?

Boy how things have changed. Cozens looks like a real solid player.
Depends on who you ask. Obviously my opinion means jack, but I was quite high on Cozens and I had him over Dach and Turcotte.

I got the impression he was a gamble, very talented, had size obviously, but there were concerns about his upside and skating ability. I was really surprised when Chicago took him so high, but I suppose if they had taken the guy I was expecting them to take (Turcotte) they'd be in much bigger trouble.

I feel a little better about the Coyotes loss now. As much trouble as Arizona gives Colorado, they absolutely OWN Toronto. So weird.

I personally wouldn't have picked Dach in the top 5 that year... maybe even top 10. If you wanted a top end winger who didn't frustrate, the best option was Boldy (after Kakko of course). If you wanted a center, you had Cozens and Zegras as guys who had 1C upside (Zegras was my #2 that year). People liked Turcotte (including myself), but he shouldn't have been a top 5 contender.

Yeah Miller is completely in the wrong there… not the first or last time a teammate will lose it on another, but that was uncalled for. Things are just rotten up there and they need a complete culture change.

Everyone knows this except the people in charge in Vancouver.
I think the front office knows it… but ownership is steering everything. Sad too as they have a lot of nice pieces.

Seems pretty clear the culture the Canucks chose last summer when they resigned Miller instead of Horvat.
I’m complete convinced that decision came from ownership.

That said, Horvat has been a very poor captain too. His job to set that foundation.

Miller was a career 50 point player who had been let go from two teams that wanted to start winning. How did he get established as such a presence in the locker room there?

It's clear as day that he mentally checked out of his captain duties when they decided to offer 8 years to Miller. It was known that there were 2 clans in that locker room last year. Management/ownership betted on the wrong horse IMO.
