Out goaltending development is horrendously bad.

Marc Denis: Developed here, awful starter, mediocre backup. Had 2 pro seasons where he won more games than lost; one behind a powerhouse Avs team as the backup, and one in the AHL.

Brent Johnson: Actually had a decent run as a starter for a few years, was never developed here so he only half counts

David Aebischer: Somewhat average starter, pretty decent backup. Probably our best drafted/developed goalie. Also he took a break from living in Switzerland to spend a year in St. John's NL, which essentially ended his NA hockey career. Can't say I blame him.

Phil Sauve: Set the bar in terms of how we draft and develop goalies. Need I say more?

Peter Budaj: Mediocre starter, very good backup. The only other real "draft and develop" success story. Almost dragged us into the playoffs that one year while on an insane run.

Tyler Wieman: greatest goalie to ever don the A, never let a single goal past him before riding off into the sunset forever. A true hero.

Sami Aittokallio: Didn't he get dehydrated super badly during a game or something? And Roy hated him.

Calvin Pickard: Awful starter, bad backup, decent 3rd stringer. Classic Avs.

Spencer Martin: Mostly below average backup, excellent 3rd stringer. Not starter material.

Adam Werner: Another classic Avs goalie, not even a good 3rd stringer.

What an incredibly depressing list to create.

Lol remember people were worried when Pickard got selected in the expansion draft

I finally had to drop this stupid scrub. What a waste of a 4th rd pick
I got lucky and traded him off in a few of my leagues, but I'm still stuck with him in a couple of others

Especially jarring considering how good our pro development is now

I consider Tim Thomas a part of the Avs' drafting... Pierre's first year was the last in Quebec and the 94 draft was one of the most impactful for the Avs in the 98-04 range. Thomas was a part of that, though the Avs (and really most of the NHL) wanted nothing to do with him. Avs certainly didn't develop him at all.

Sieder hasn't taken a step back this year, he's playing a tougher role and he's not getting a ton of PP points (had 21 last year). If the power play suddenly gets clicking, people will change their mind quickly on if he's taken a step back. Any GM worth their salt would take him over Byram, and that is partially due to injures. Availability is a skill, and Byram's injury issues are not all bad luck. His style of play is a big factor.

I really don't think New Jersey's defense or style will hold them back in the playoffs. I don't trust their goaltending and the east is just going to be tough. Their first round opponent is likely to be someone of the Pittsburgh/Isles/Rangers/Wings/Florida/Tampa. Really only the Wings look like an easy out there. That said, on paper, stats wise, eye test wise... they've been a dominant team, the most dominant in the NHL. There are maybe 2-3 games all year where they've been taken to the shed. The rest they have been competitive to dominant and that is incredibly good 1/3 through the season. Boston has been the 2nd best team in the league and they have 6-7 games where they haven't been great (though I'd say since they've been close to healthy, they've been dominant and the best). Vegas is probably 3rd here (debatable with Toronto) and they have a stinker every 4-5 games. New Jersey's start is one of the best in league history, and historically when you look at those teams, they tend to do well. Not always, but the vast majority of the time.

Vegas might be in trouble as their top players are getting injured.

Eichel
Pietrangelo
Theodore
Whitecloud

Pietrangelo isn't injured. He's taking time away due to a family illness.

All teams go through injuries... of those only Whitecloud's looks like it could last a longer period of time. Eichel will be back within in a week (maybe tomorrow). Theodore is probably more of the ~3 week variety.

Mark Stone is healthy but he isn't having a great season offensively. 22 points in 30 games is low in today's NHL for a top line winger with PP1 time.

He's simply not producing on the PP and that's why the numbers don't look great... ES he's been pretty good (same ES points as Kaprizov). But he is clearly regressing before out eyes.

Vegas may have traded one problem for another. Previously they lacked gamebreaking talent in the postseason and their offense dried up. Now they have the gamebreaking talent but they've all but destroyed their depth, which sometimes also leads to offense drying up in the postseason. Guess we'll see what happens.

On a serious note, I read about Pietrangelo's situation, that's horrible. You'd have to think it's really serious if he's taking time off during the season to attend to it.

Speaking of injuries, (apologies in advance if I already posted this) I'm not yet ready to write off Bo Byram due to durability issues, but I think Nick Robertson has officially crossed the line into "Not gonna be an impact NHL player" because of them.

Nick inherited his brother's skating in Girard's body. It is a bad mix to begin with, but he takes an absolute beating all the time. Very few can do that with a smaller frame.

Still kinda funny in hindsight that he was by far the more hyped of the two.

That was more post draft and being the Toronto media sphere. Jason was always the better prospect. I remember watching him in junior and always thinking... 'if this guy can ever skate for a whole shift, look out!' Now I didn't expect top 5 in league sort of production, but he always looked like a 30g to me (back when looking at things through a lower level lens... so more like 40g today). It was kinda hilarious that in the first 15-20 seconds of a shift, he'd make plays and create chances. By the time 30-35 rolled around, he was killing plays. He was clearly a top scoring talent though.

What an incredibly depressing list to create.

I honestly don't think they invested much at all into developing a goalie until recently. I believe they were one of the last teams in the NHL to hire a goalie coach and even then they just went out and hired Jeff Hackett, Jose Theodore's ex-teammate, a guy who had no previous coaching experience IIRC. After that I don't think they really bothered with a legit goalie coach again until Francois Allaire, and then had Kurt McLean as a part-time consultant following that. And then of course you had Hepple flat out admit that they purposely took Euro goalies in the draft because they would rather those teams put in the time and money to develop them. It really wasn't until they took Annunen in the draft that they finally hired a goalie development coach and seemingly put in the work/money to develop him properly.

It wasn't that they were merely bad at it, they just didn't even bother trying.

To be fair our boy @Bender was hyping him BIG TIME in his annual pre-draft report.

Yup, which means MacFarland should be all over it. Trade for and sign Horvat and have your 2C for a long time instead of keep giving up assets every year to get one
Newhook Girard and a first for the privilege of paying Horvat 9m a year. If you're lucky like this year he'll get more than 60 points.

You would think at this point, it would be in Vancouver's best interest to try and get a sign and deal done to maximize their return, right?

I mean, we won't be thrilled with the cost, but you've gotta pay if you want to play. I'd offer a 2024 1st, Kaut, Brad Hunt and a Cale Makar autographed SCF puck. :sarcasm:

Seriously though, it's got to cost at least a first (can we do a 2024 one and keep our 2023?), one of Girard/Newhook/Byram, and what else?
