His father, Duke, passed away in May from cancer and also suffered from Parkinson’s, dementia, and a traumatic brain injury (sheesh, poor guy). It very deeply affected Brock and he broke down during a presser when asked about his father’s health not long before Duke died.

So on Hockey Fights Cancer night in Vancouver, a night when he’d be wearing a lavender warmup jersey with his father’s name on it, the Canucks were going to make him a healthy scratch. The only thing that prevented that was Dakota Joshua getting injured right beforehand and was unable to go. Even NHL Network, who tend to avoid any sort of criticism of team conduct, called them out on it.

It’s just crazy how, no matter who’s in charge of the Canucks, stupid, easily-avoided shit like this keeps happening. The dysfunction in that franchise is rampant and points at the problem being at the very top.
Wow I did not know the background to this jeez that’s a bad look for the Canucks.

Actual insanity

Boeser and the Canucks staff (even before BB) have never gotten along. Boeser has always been a bit of a problematic character where ever he is. Doesn't excuse that situation though.

And when you build around a goalie and defensive systems all the time.

Here's the thing though--Bergevin didn't even really "build" in those intervening years. He just kinda coasted, did nothing when he lost Markov, didn't even bother utilizing the cap space afforded him. It was only after he finally convinced Molson to boot Subban did he finally took an aggressive approach.

Maybe for Bergevin "build" isn't the right word but the Habs always game plan around their goalie.

Yeah but even by that measure they did a horrid job. And I've never understood the notion of "building from the goalie out," which usually means assembling the most boring team imaginable. If I were an NHL GM and I was handed an elite, franchise netminder to start, I'd be going out of my way to be as run-and-gun as possible. Like, c'mon, you got a built-in safety valve, why not go and get as much firepower as you can? Mike Gillis recognized that upon arrival in Vancouver, whereas his predecessor Dave Nonis wanted a team that tried to grind the opposition into submission.

Even the Devils in their trap-happy heyday understood you need elite offensive talent.

Fully agree, Habs gonna Habs.

To be fair up until the last season he openly said that he wanted to build through the entry draft. The thing is, Molson didn't let him tank so he had to try to make the playoffs every year while "building". Also they got unlucky with their high draft picks (Galchenyuk, Kotkaniemi).

I wouldn't say they got unlucky as much as Trevor Timmins just became really bad at his job. Galchenyuk was a pretty highly-touted prospect at the time, I'll concede that, but Kotkaniemi was a reach. Not the first time centers get overvalued in a draft, they're the quarterbacks of hockey. Timmins IIRC had some big misses (Fisher) but for the most part was able to get some good talent out of most levels of the draft. Don't know if it was a refusal to integrate analytics or Bergevin's influence or what, but he lost his way.

Whether it was a refusal to tank and stockpile picks or something else, it just reeked of indecision. I don't think Bergevin had any idea of what kind of team he truly wanted. Even the culmination of his supposed "vision," the team that fluked their way to the Final, looked like a total slapdash job.

Vision, that's the big thing for a good GM, an architect type. Bergevin was a dealer, fairly decent at that, but the deals in insolation didn't build toward something. He probably can still be a good AGM that fetches deal opportunities for a GM with a plan and the final say.

It's like he's already an Av

Don't wake the crowd that always beats the drum that we should always have 3 NHL caliber goalies.

He is putting on a clinic tonight… His best shift was just him dominating down low that didn’t end up in a goal.

Here was the full shift on the first goal

The setup for the goal was great but the rest of his shit was nothing that spectacular. You can see a shift like that pretty often in the NHL.

I don't want to take anything away from him because he IS a great player I'd love to have on the Avs.

You don’t see very many shifts where one player has the puck for ~25 seconds, with 4 different touches and he ends up going through multiple defenders to setup a goal on a cross ice pass. We see it from time to time here, but not often. That’ll be a top 5 shift for the month… top 10-15 for the year. And it wasn’t his best from tonight.
