I also did not know this. I wonder What goalie back in the day was tossing so many puck forward that it resulted in this rule being made?

I don't get the nuance for one to be a penalty and not the other. The way Gibson gloved the puck appeared very inefficient so I don't understand why this way is forbidden.

Edit: I would understand if he used the blocker glove and air mailed it out of the zone.
