Florida is not a good team.
Neither are the oilers.
But Isles are a good team, and so is Seattle!

I expected Seattle to be better this year, but I didn't expect them to actually be good. Even if they continue to get garbage goaltending, they'll be in the playoff hunt. If they start getting average goaltending... they should be 2nd or 3rd in the Pacific.

Seattle is a really unique team right now. Highest cap hit in the team is only 5.9M (Grubauer's, lol). It probably helps also that they have Beniers on ELC, so they do have high end talent too. Has this type of "balanced" team ever won the cup in cap era?

St Louis would be the closest... but unsurprisingly and unoriginal... Vegas' run to the Cup is the most direct link.

Why do some people think Hamilton is a #1 D? I mean the guy is like what i call a temporary #1D. Meaning he can pass as a #1 for a little while until his play drops and teams don't keep him. No one gets rid of a legit #1 d-man, those are rare and teams keep them forever. Hamilton has already been on 4 teams
Teams don't keep Hamilton because he wants to get paid and doesn't gel with teammates.

Moving around shouldn't preclude him from being a #1D though. If that is the measuring stick, Pronger played on 5 teams. Coffey played on 9 IIRC.

Well, it's not all about his aloofness off the ice, for a #1D he's got some huge flaws in his defensive game. Every playoffs he's good for at least a couple WTF moments.

And yes I'm aware Paul Coffey was not exactly Doug Harvey in his own end, but those Oilers and Penguins teams he played for DGAF about defense anyway.

I wouldn’t be comfortable at all with Dougie Hamilton as the #1D if the plan is to win a cup. Dude is a gentle giant, doesn't perform that well in the playoffs and ideally needs his partner to do the defensive heavy lifting.

It's not a surprise that teams and fans have no issues losing this supposed top #1D.

He's got flaws and he's not a perfect defender, but he's a #1. Hamilton is just the wrong mix of a guy to the point where teams just don't want to build around him (if he was more willing to take less money, I think he would have stuck somewhere long-term). An excellent player to supplement as strong core, but not a guy you desire to build around. In a completely different manner, but like a Jovo-cop of today.

Not really, and Vegas, as much as they're all about the shiny new toys, recognized that for all their success, the offense kept drying up at the worst possible time in the postseason. At some point teams usually need at least one gamebreaking talent who scores in the clutch. St. Louis got their guy in O'Reilly (though I'd be pretty surprised if he ever replicated that run again), Vegas is sure as hell hoping Eichel is their guy.

IMO that's why San Jose were never able to finish the job back when they were dominant in the regular season. Thornton was certainly a gamebreaking talent in his day, but he also never, ever shot the puck.

Well good thing he’s paired with arguably the best outright defender in the NHL.

There's an alternate universe where the Avs don't listen to Roy's demands to get Greer and Meloche and instead keep the pick from the ROR trade and are drafting all Finnish in the first two rounds, sporting a line of: Hintz-Aho-Rantanen
Avs definitely don't scout in Finland. It's a bit annoying for me because I'd love to follow an Avs prospect and share how they are doing overseas.

Lehto is is based in Finland and directs all European scouting.

This is getting out of hand. Devils have had a solid start but that take is scorching hot
It is a little rich... but advanced metrics are on the side of it. Basically Slavin and Siegenthaler dominate defensive microstats.

No it's not. Siegenthaler is an astoundingly good defensive defenseman. His underlying numbers are off the charts. Washington was sooooooooo stupid giving him away because Laviolette just happened not to like him.

Another thing I want to address is the Draisaitl is the undisputed #2 player in the world ideology. Let me preface this by saying he is an absolute beast I love the player and think he is a top 5 talent easily if not better.

What I raise issue is undisputed second best in the world. What I see is McDavid serving up saucy dish after saucy dish to Drai who converts at a very nice clip but benefits no doubt. You can’t tell me you put Pasta, Kuch, or even our boy Rants in his shoes and they don’t put up similar numbers. That doesn’t even get into what Mathews or MacK could do with the open space Connor would create for them. Of course there is also Cale who deserves to be in this conversation as well.

Flavour of the week show me he can do it for 3+ years before I give that title away. Seider, Slavin, Pietro, there’s others all have a better track record at this time.

lot of posters on here gonna be eating crow when the devils go out in 5 or 6 games round 1 later this year
