Im fine with him aswell but I rather have Hughes.
Looking at the roster right now, I can see the argument that Hughes would be better for this team than Bo. But Byram was instrumental* to the cup run, and I think I would still rather go to the playoffs this season with Bo and try to fix that top-6 with a trade, rather than the other way around.

Good thing not a single person said this I guess
And not a single person said scouting was "pure luck" either. That was a strawman too.

Luck is, at the very least though, a significant portion of what determines a good draft, unless you think Pracey had a stroke immediately after the 2009 draft that only affected the portion of his brain responsible for evaluating prospects. You 100% roll the dice with every draft pick. Some scouting teams use loaded dice to tilt the odds in their favor, and that's why some teams draft better than others, but the dice will still fail them more often than not.

I think you mean that Bo was instrumental to the cup run, not detrimental. At least I hope so...

I rest my case

Again, not true. Law of averages says most of any team’s draft class will not make it to the NHL. In fact if you get two viable NHLers out of a possible seven total picks, you’re doing really good.

Is some luck involved? Sure. But good drafting teams know how to cut down on that random happenstance. If it was all or even mostly luck then there wouldn’t be a few teams in the league who consistently find these players in lower rounds, and there wouldn’t be teams (like Colorado) who never do.
What do you think law of averages and random happenstance are? Luck.

It's kind of strange that people focus on being successful only at top 10 picks. And that might be fair. But isn't it strange how so many of those picks spend little/no time at the Avs AHL affiliate?

I'm obviously alluding development aspect to this discussion.

If Rantanen is your only prospect to develop and he's a top 10 pick in a strong draft, when are people going to question whether it's purely drafting?

Rantanen wasn't happy about the state of the AHL club(when he played there). He paid for his own nutritionist, psychology I think etc. ( Have to find the old article for more precise info)

Sounds pretty amateurish to me if those things are not provided.. but its probably better with Eagles now.

Uhhh yeah. Bo had one of the most dominant 3rd periods to close out a Cup clinching game I've ever seen
Not only that, but Kadri was huge for the Avs, not only in regular season but in the playoffs. Hughes has just started to breakout, he was good last year and real good this year so far, but we haven't seen him in the playoffs. Not sure he would have the same effect as Kadri in the postseason. Probably not

Hughes is going to be a very high end 1C... MacK level. If he was here instead of Bo, a lot of roster problems would be solved. The defense wouldn't be as strong (though still very strong with the group that is here), but there'd be zero questions about the center depth on the Avs. I'd argue that Hughes would be extending the Cup window significantly.

The Devils locking up their 1C and 2C for under 8 million a piece is an absolute game changer. A perfect storm of draft luck and great timing before the salary cap begins to creep back up.

As much as I love having another potential number 1 defenseman, we need to see Byram endure a full 82 game season. I think we eventually make that Dmen for 2C swap if Byram shows he can last a full season. Figures crossed.

They are a Cup contender today if they can solve goaltending.

Marino was such a good acquisition as well. That’s a team that can potentially win with average goaltending. They‘re stacked everywhere.

They ain't solving no goaltending. That's what happens when you get Martin Brodeuer for almost 20 years. Now you suffer with the Vanecek's and Blackwood's of the world.
Vanecek has been pretty good, but I think they make a trade.

Let’s see the Devils put together a full solid season first. They remind me a lot of the Panthers, who have still not found “it”
Devils look a lot more like Hawks circa 08 than anybody else. Young, fast, high pressure, very solid mix of defenders... very questionable in net.

They are also likely to add Nemec and Hughes towards the end of the season (and with that, have the ability to dangle Severson), and Holtz is likely to establish himself too. Team is built incredibly well.

Exactly. Look at how many years Avalanche had to grow before winning it.
You can find many examples of teams that go from out of the playoffs to contending very quickly.
