New Jersey has outshot every team they've played this year by at least a 60/40 split, except for us.

They look absolutely dominant at both ends of the ice. Might be a year for them to go for it tbh. If I were them I'd be looking at Meier + Gibson at the deadline.
Not even sure if they need Meier… Gibson though, yikes for the East.
Merzlikins has pulled his mental groin.
Don’t tell his wife

The Devils really should go for it this year because their team is about to enter into a big time cap crunch.

Severson, Graves, Tatar, Wood, Haula are all UFAs while Bratt, Sharangovich, McLeod, Boqvist, Bastian, Zetterlund, and Blackwood are RFAs.

Bratt is probably going to cost them a heck of a lot more than he currently does if he keeps scoring at this torrid pace, especially based on how this past summer's negotiations went. I can see him asking for 9+ and I'll bet some team out there is willing to give it to him.

He's tied for 3rd place in goal scoring since St.Louis took over.

You just knew he'd find success at some point with those GPG numbers in juniors. He has one of the most pure shots that you'll ever see. Happy for the little guy

I doubt any of the UFAs outside of maybe Graves or Wood will be back. Of the RFAs Bratt will get a big payday… maybe Sharangovich too… rest are just replacement level contracts. What will push New Jersey up though is their prospect depth. Lots of young guys nearing their NHL impacts. That’ll replace a lot of the depth.

The NJ core has basically 0 playoff experience. They aren't going to go all in with that. It takes time.

Watch teams like Devils, Flyers, Sabres (maybe forgetting couple of more) crash down to earth in a month or two and they gonna come to reality. Right now they're just riding one of those unsustainable stretches which happens every year

Crazy they still have Hughes/Nemec/Holtz coming down the pipeline.

@Bill Peckerskull, I was trying to reply to your post about Tempe City Council, but it didn't put your quote in the post for some reason.

------

I was in Phoenix and Tucson years ago when Gretzky was still at the helm over the Coyotes. When I brought up hockey, several people said they would never support the team due to what they considered corruption and lies. These were auto dealers and salesmen in the region. I was surprised at the vitriol, and I always wondered if that's still affecting things, but it was over 20 years ago.

Team relations are always so important to success, and it was apparently bungled in that rollout. When I look at how hockey tries to turn profits I can kind of understand how it can cause issues even accidentally.

Perhaps but they're right up against the cap as it stands. Those RFAs are also on EXTREMELY cheap contracts outside of Bratt. Sharangovich had 46 points last season. If he gets in that realm again this season there's no reason his agent can't justify a 4M+ contract.

Wood probably has zero chance of increasing his pay unless he kills it this season but Graves can ask for a bump absolutely. They'd also have to actually replace Severson if he leaves who has been their #1D in each of the previous 4 seasons given his TOI allocation. Luke Hughes coming along no doubt helps that loss but I think it's a lot tighter thank you think.

Then there's the whole Bratt situation. Based on the last negotiation it won't shock me one bit if he's not playing in New Jersey next season and if that happens, that's a MAJOR blow to their forwards.

Severson is on the middle pairing now and his replacement/s are built into their pool. He’s as good as gone after the season (maybe by the deadline).

Bratt will be expensive if he re-signs and yeah that is an if. Sharangovich will get a raise, but another guy who has earned it.

One of the main reasons they are at the cap now is Bernier contract. 4.2ish of dead right now. With the guys expiring, they’ll have room to lock up the core (and their core centers are on amazing deals) and have plenty for depth, especially with the young players they have on the verge.

They are a step or two away from a contender and they may not get there until the net is settled. They’ll still likely be very good next year and are built to really contend sometime in the next 3-4.
