It just makes very little sense on any level. You draft a skill guy 4th OV, force them immediately to the lineup despite not being ready only to use him like a scrub 4th liner.

Drai was saved once the Oilers finally sent him back to juniors where he belonged, it was pretty painful before they did.

Francis seems to be on a quest to ruin Wright so maybe they will keep him up all year and barely play the guy.
Wright won’t be ruined either way. These players figure it out

I wouldn't be so sure. These are still key development years. If the player barely plays, has no confidence and doesn't quite belong it can change their career trajectory.
That idea really tends to be more a myth than truth. Plenty of players who have struggled and barely played in their +1 and been just fine.

Caufield on a 50 goal pace since St. Louis took over. What a stud, I am jealous.
He's tied for 3rd place in goal scoring since St.Louis took over.

Yeah. Coaches, no matter how inept, can’t really “ruin” a player’s development. They can slow it down or speed it up, but they can’t just stop it outright. If Mike Keenan couldn’t ruin Stephen Weiss despite his best efforts, then no coach can.

That said, Hakstol always has been and always will be a lousy NHL coach.

New Jersey has outshot every team they've played this year by at least a 60/40 split, except for us.

They look absolutely dominant at both ends of the ice. Might be a year for them to go for it tbh. If I were them I'd be looking at Meier + Gibson at the deadline.
