Term was the problem for me.
Term isn't a problem if they'll suck in years 4/5/6 because Crosby most likely retires by then, as does Malkin.

Years 4/5/6 are basically "thank you" years for Letang's service since he joined the Penguins years ago. Total money is a lot for Letang, AAV is low for Pittsburgh. Win-win. Show me legit #1D like Letang making 6M.

Just surprised they would give him such a big thank you contract.

Great gesture for sure.

Why give thank you contracts anyway?
It's cap era and business is business.
We might as well sign Kuemper for 6x6 for a thank you. No sir.

Yeah it's a bad comparison, but still.

Exactly and these players will always find safe jobs in their organization after their playing career.

You said it: bad comparison.

Crosby will be 37 by the time Letang is in his 4th year of this contract. If he retires (I bet he does) then I assume Letang MAYBE plays 1 year and finishes on LTIR.

Penguins can get around the cap hit via LTIR, they reward Letang long term AND they get a #1D at a ridiculous cap hit while they go for it the next 3 years.

I honestly don't see why people think this is a bad deal. This is phenomenal for Pittsburgh.

That Kassian deal is.... wow....

You sometimes read fans here saying "just give the player x more term, you can always get rid of a contract" or something like that, and yes, true, you can get rid of contracts. And sometimes you have to do what Holland just did...

Almost wish Joe had called Holland and explained the importance of having two magic beans er...draft picks over one and then convinced him to take both our 6th and 7th round picks for the same package instead.

I can't wait for Chicago to trade all three of these first round picks they just took within four years. Dach makes it, what, eight years in a row now?

I remember arguing he is not all that good and that the Hawks are idiots for letting him play at the WJC. One limp wrist and unimpressive tenure in Chicago later and I feel I was sadly right. He is talented, but the kid lacks drive. Rich mans Grigorenko.
