Here's a serious and realistic proposal:

Trade Rantanen to Winnipeg this summer straight up for PLD and then sign UFA Forsberg to replace him.

Sign Forsberg to 7 X 8M and PLD to 7 X 6.5M

Rants (9.25M) + Kadri (4.5M) = 13.75M
Forsberg (8M) + PLD (6.5M) = 14.5M

Only 750k more on the cap and 1W and 2C are fixed long term.

Forsberg probably won’t be worth the money

The minute I read this preface I absolutely knew it was going to be neither of these things.

What's not realistic about it?

We probably could swap 3 years of Rants for 2 years of cheap 1C Scheifele but I'd rather have RFA PLD.

Dubois last year: 28 goals, 32 assists, 60 pts, 108 PIM. He's a big 2 way center who's entering his prime. Dude was just traded for RFA Laine. He's totally what we're looking for.

Unless you think that 8M X 7 for Forsberg isn't realistic...but that's probably market value.

What's not realistic? All of it.

Winnipeg has struggled for YEARS to fill out their center depth chart. Now that they finally have some semblance of a 1-2 punch up the middle they're going to just hand it over to a division rival for another winger?

I get they might have a decision to make with Scheifele but ain't no way are they flipping Dubois unless Dubois doesn't want to re-up, and if he doesn't, he still isn't coming to Denver.

Besides, I think PLD is a good player, but no way, no how would I trade Mikko Rantanen for him.

The other part is equally ridiculous. What happens when you trade away Rantanen to free up this mythical cap room...only to not get Forsberg?

The cool thing is that while we upgrade a bit at C. We also massively downgrade at W and get a significantly worse contract. What’s not to like?

Jesus Christ...I thought you'd have at least some arguments against my proposal. Not this.

PLD's future in Winnipeg is uncertain at best but you may have missed the news on that.

Forsberg has been linked to the Avs several times and as recently as last week. Obviously they'd not pull the trigger on a Rantanen trade unless they know that Forsberg is going to sign here.

Upgrade a bit at C? PLD would upgrade who at 2C next year exactly? Compher? Newhook?

And in your scenario how would PLD not be improving from Kadri? He’d be his direct replacement.
Forget Kadri, I only used him for cap space comparisons. It's not about improving or replacing Kadri, it's about finding a 2C for next season. If not PLD then it's going to have to be someone else.

Forsberg being available and somehow linked to us change things.

And we want Forsberg why? That contract, whatever it will be, f***ing sucks.

And it appears you didn't read my post. I'm well aware that Dubois may not wish to stay in Winnipeg, I even mention that, doesn't mean Chevy will just flip him to a division rival.

If Winnipeg is smart, they'll be rebuilding their aging roster and trying to get younger. Not trying to hang on as a bubble team. If they have to move Dubois, then the only thing that should matter to them is the return.

I'm not talking about what they should do, I'm talking about what they will do. You're applying sound logic to one of the most illogical front offices in the league.

I do not think for one minute that Chevy has the balls to blow it up. No way. He might try a major retool, but he's not starting over.

I should have said rebuild/retool. I don't think he needs to blow it up. But he may want to retool the way the Avs retooled after the Duchene trade. Which took a few years to get competitive again.

And if the Avs trade for Dubois, I have a feeling he won't be particularly easy to re-sign long term, so he might end up singing for like 3 years to keep the AAV down. So the Jets may not even be competitive during his time in Colorado.

It may be a tough trade to pull off in division, but the Avs might also have better assets to offer than say a team like Montreal. I don't think it's impossible they make it happen.

The retool that took place with the Duchene trade took some savvy and a bit of luck on the part of Sakic and McFarland. I don't think Cheveldayoff and his staff have much of either. There hasn't been anything I can see during Chevy's tenure that he's really capable of retooling a roster, he's always seemed content letting players develop and swapping out complementary pieces. The only two major trades he's made have pretty much been a wash.

We want Forsberg because he's a 1st line winger, not too old, who can produce well over PPG on a shit team.
Ok but he can’t produce well over a PPG on a bad team. This is the only year he’s ever been PPG. He’s a good player but he’s incredibly injury prone. Just an incredibly risky target.
