If the Avs do decide to pay/keep Kuemper, I wonder if the plan of marinating Maltsev in the AHL is to try him at 3C

9296
Newhook - x - Nuke
Lehkonen - Maltsev - LOC/X
x - Meyers - LOC/X

This is assuming Compher is moved, Sturm and the vets aren't re-signed (though i could see them holding onto Cogliano for cheap depth)

Ranta, Kaut, Cogliano, OO are all options for one of those 'X's, so that leaves 2 spots on the active roster available through trade/FA
It's been one game but I can say pretty confidently there is no way the Avs are penciling in Mikhail Maltsev to the 3C position next season over Ben Myers.

Hell, I would not be shocked if Maltsev isn't playing for the Avs organization at all next season.

it's been one game, but Meyers seems to be more of a 4th line guy with a good motor than anything else. Maltsev clearly has more skill/tools/offensive ability IMO. He would be in the NHL this year if our roster wasn't so deep, and has only kept producing in the AHL this season.

Meyers did more in 1 game than Maltsev was able to do in 18. Go look at Maltsev's TOI from his first game until his final game. There's a very clear pattern there and it has nothing to do with how deep our team is.

Maltsev is not a Jared Bednar player. That much is very easy to see.

There will definitely be a lot of teams interested. If DK is only looking for a big payday and doesn't care WHERE he plays, he's pretty much gone right now. It would be surprising from a guy coming from that Donkey-show in Arizona but you never know.

Exactly.

There was no context given. As soon as I heard that, I automatically assumed that this occurred very shortly after making his acquisition and probably prior to him playing for the Avs.

I think at this point, the Avs and the DK camp are fine with just playing it out. I understand the Avs point of view that they want to make sure they sign a starter long-term that they feel can take them all the way and from the DK camp, they probably want a great contract or they'll wait until Free Agency.

How much difference in terms of $$$ would it mean to wait to re-sign him after the playoffs vs doing it now??

And if you actually win the Cup, obviously you don't want to lose your starter but then it's like "well, at least we won the Cup but we can't keep everybody"...

Everything pretty much hinges on how much DK loves playing and living in Denver or not.

I think that both sides will reach a consensus where the Avs are giving DK an extra year of term they'd prefer not to give him (that 5th year) and he'll come-in at around mid-5. ($5.5M x 5 years)
The worry is getting a "Crawford situation". Chicago dodged it once with Niemi, but the Crawford contract played a big role in Chicago's decline after their last cup.

If the Avs signed Grubauer last season to his current contract, they would already be in that situation

For three years post-2015 win Corey Crawford was one of two players along with Patrick Kane keeping that Blackhawks team from being laughably bad until injuries caught up to him.

I know the Avs have been avoiding term. But I think that was a good idea for the time beyond the summer of 2023. However, for contracts beyond that, giving more term might make more sense if it can come with less of a cap hit per year. It might be the key to giving us more of a window and also have some roster stability.

Another thing is that giving more term could be used in relation to the salary cap finally increasing. The Avs have been kind of unlucky that their window has come at a time where the cap is so stagnant. By giving more term, the contracts would maybe not seem so bad 4 or 5 years down the road after the cap has been going up. If giving term means less of a cap hit, the roster stability and the increasing cap limit can give us more cap space in subsequent years.

This is absolutely false narrative at play. Crawford played no role whatsoever in their decline. In fact, he masked a lot of the decline of the team in front of him until it got so bad he couldn't anymore. The decline of Toews, Kane, and especially Keith was what ultimately did in the Hawks, not to mention some absurdly horrid moves by Bowman to try and keep the window open.

Crawford was a fantastic goalie, don't compare him to Niemi.

Kane? No he was still elite for years after the start of their decline.

Toews' yes to a degree (but not as much as we'd think). What happened is their defense got old and they lost too much depth after they started paying players for past accomplishments.

GM's just can't resist trying to keep the core that won them cups intact even if they should know it's going to hurt the team going forward. Seabrook is the perfect example.

If we do win the cup I hope Sakic won't hesitate to let core players walk if he has to.

I’d kill for a Crawford level goalie here long term. I think Kuemper could be that guy, just sucks that he’s 32 and has the injury history that he does.

Kane can still put the puck in the net, but his bad defensive game has gone to "holy shit why do you even bother" levels.

If the Avs win the Cup and some "reward contracts" get handed out, I honestly won't care because...that means they won the Cup! I'm okay with MacKinnon, Makar, Rantanen, and Landeskog sticking around as long as possible in that scenario, it's nice when your favorite players stick around their entire careers. Never fun to see them suit up for someone else. As a kid it kinda killed me to see Alex English in a Mavericks uniform. That was way worse for me than Forsberg as a Flyer and a Pred.

Hey guys, what do you think the chances are we get these guys next year?

Vitek Vanecek
Linus Ullmark
David Perron
Reilly Smith
Claude Giroux
Ryan Strome
Justin Braun
Mark Giordano
John Klingberg
Anton Strålman

Well, if any of those goalies are gotten that's really bad news, because the Avs already have their backup in Frankie signed for the next two years. He most assuredly is the #2 going into next season. None of those guys are legit starters.

No one on that list looks particularly great except maybe Smith, who's a good two-way winger. Giroux is obviously a good player but I think someone is going to pay stupid money for him, plus I think he wants to stay out East.

A couple of those guys could fill out the depth on cheap one-year deals but that's about it. Stralman is pretty much done, isn't he? Klingberg will get a contract from someone that will end in a buyout in 2-3 seasons.

Two guys not on that list I wouldn't mind the Avs taking a look at (especially if they're just not going to bring back MacNorris) are Colin Miller and Mark Pysyk. Both are finishing out the season with Buffalo and will be UFA this summer.

Pysyk is all defense, and managed good underlying numbers in that respect despite being on the team where Careers Go To Die. Miller put up middle-of-the-road underlying metrics. Both are around the same age (29/30), both are roughly the same size (not big, not pint-sized either), and both are right-handed shots. The big difference is that Miller's current deal is a fair bit more expensive than Pysyk's by about two million.

I am going to assume that since Buffalo surprisingly moved no one at the deadline, they're opting to bring Pysyk back. I can't imagine they'll bring back Miller, that ended up being a disappointment for them after he put up some slightly-inflated numbers when he was with the Golden Nights.

UFA's at the end of the year:

Kadri
Burakovsky
Nichushkin
Helm
Sturm
Cogliano
Manson
Murray
J. Johnson
Kuemper

RFA's:

Lehkonen
Aube-Kubel

Personally I'd like to keep Nuke, Sturm, Cogs, Manson, Kuemper and Lehks. Possibly JJ and/or NAK if they are under 1M.

It's hard to believe that more players haven't been re-upped yet. That's a ridiculously long list, Sakic will have a lot of work to do in the offseason.

Well, now we know why he hasn't signed with anyone yet.

Sucks for the kid, but he'll be more careful picking vitamin supplements from now on.

Honestly, I’m not sure I want Manson back.

I’m definitely not giving him $4M. If he wants to come back for a cheap deal I’d be down, but he’s not the kind of player I’d pay max market value for. Support defenceman can be had at the deadline.
