Not sure why he wouldn’t be able to. I mean Barrie brought back Kadri as a pending UFA. Girard should be able to do the same.

Barrie was seen as a top offensive D, the Leafs wanted RHD and were tired of Kadri.

I'm not saying Girard can't bring a similar return but i'm not seeing a good match out there.

I heard both Sakic and MacFarland were at the Pio's game last night.

Wonder if they might be trying to gauge Behrens readiness to turn pro next year, for a potential Girard trade for a 2C? Similar to how they wanted to bring Makar in for the playoffs, to help gauge whether they could move Barrie for a 2C?

Seems like next year might be a year early for Behrens, but Sakic was very complimentary of him and his all around game last week. Maybe they think he could be ready at 19 like Girard was ready at 19? Perhaps to start in the AHL if need be, but could be worked into the NHL lineup towards the end of the regular season?

I'm struggling a bit to think of why else both of the top Av brass needed to watch him live, instead of sending a scout, and/or just watching him from the comfort of their own home. Maybe just to meet with him and touch base, but both Joe and CMac seem like overkill for that.

What about Nylander + Kämpf for Girard + Compher?

Girard+ for Scheifele+ is a trade I really think could happen this summer. Both guys fill needs for the other team. Jets need a top tier PMD IMO, and I think that while they have been hoping Heinola would be that guy, he hasn't show to be that yet. Avs get a 2C at a reasonable cap hit for 2 more cup runs.

Something like Girard + Compher for Scheifele + DeMelo would be fair for both teams IMO. Cap wise it would nearly be a wash for both teams as well... I believe the Avs would add 625k in cap space.

Perhaps picks or prospects need to be added to balance the trade out, but I dont think it would take much. As a basis I think it'd be quite fair value honestly.

So not only they have to replace Copp and Stastny but they have to replace Scheifele as well? Where do all these centers will come from?

They finally got a center to play behind Scheifele (PLD) and now they'll get rid of one of them?

Explain how it makes sense for the Jets to get rid of their 1C and who's going to play center on that team.

Further to this.... Here's a potential lineup the Avs could run next year after making the trade....

- Signing Palat and Blackwell as UFAs in the summer:

Palat - Mack - Mikko
Nuke - Scheifele - Landy
Lehkonen - Newhook - Blackwell
LOC - Malstev - Cogliano
NAK/MacDermid as extras

Toews - Makar
Byram - DeMelo
Johnson - Johnson

Kuemper
Francouz

Defensive depth takes a hit and you really can only make the move if you believe and are confident in Byram's health moving forward... Assuming Nuke and Lehkonen are re-singed at reasonable numbers(~4.5 and 3.5 respectively) that roster like comes in around 81.5-82M.

Avs would also have the option of buying out EJ and getting a bottom pairing Dman for under 4M that would save some additional space... We'll have to wait and see whether they go that route or not though.

Sakic needs to wake back up and resign Kuemper. Have one less UFA to worry about. For what it cost to get him and how he has played, it should be a no brainer

Oh it’s a brainer. Doesn’t matter how well he does, it’s a brainer to re-sign a middle-tier starter who had an extremely rough start to the season who also happens to be in his thirties.

People pounding the table to re sign kuemper couldn’t be rid of him fast enough in November … let’s see how playoffs go before we make any offers

I wonder if they're trying to figure out whether or not he's leaning towards another year of college or if he'll be willing to sign in Colorado.

If Helleson reportedly wasn't going to sign, I'm sure Sakic doesn't want another guy giving him the cold shoulder like that.

Take your homer glasses off. Girard isn’t returning Schiefele.

Also, Francouz should probably never be a starting goalie ever. Not even a 1A. 1B at best.

And RH defenseman:naughty: LA have a lot to offer both the Avs and Arizona, for one of Girard/Chychrun. And they should be looking at one of those D, imo.
I think G would have to be significantly cheaper for them to choose that option.

My way too early off-season. I think this actually leaves the Avs with 2 million left in cap space.

Resignings:

Nichushkin: $5.3M X 6
Kuemper: $5.5M X 5
Lekhonen: $3.5M X 5
Manson: $3.5M X 3
Sturm: $2M X 1
Cogliano: $900K X 1
Jack Johnson $1M X 1

FA signings:

Ilya Mikheyev: $3.5M X 3
Alex Goligoski: $2.8M X 2

Trades:

To Columbus: Girard
To Colorado: Texier, 2023 4th round pick

To Detroit: EJ
To Colorado: 7th round pick 2023

Landeskog - Mack - Rantanen
Nichushkin - Newhook - Mikheyev
Lekhonen - Texier - Compher
Cogliano - Sturm - LOC
Maltsev

Toews - Makar
Byram - Manson
JJ - Goligoski
MacDonald

Kuemper
Francouz

EJ won't waive to go to Detroit and Yzerman won't take his full cap hit for free.

Either EJ retires on LTIR (needs to be injured) or plays for the Avs next season (at 6M AAV) or gets bought out.

Either way. Trade him to someone. He’ll be a pending UFA. Won’t be hard to move.

At the deadline probably not but this summer he will be. Also he has to agree, he has a full NMC.

Getting rid of EJ and getting no contract back is a real tough task.
