It doesn’t seem like they’re focusing on anything right now in terms of his development. You develop those things with reps in game situations which he isn’t currently getting enough of with so few minutes. I have faith in new management, but the honeymoon phase is almost over and I’m not going to pretend these guys aren’t capable of being boneheads just like ghosts of the pasts.

I think there is a lot of stuff going on in practice and behind the scenes. MSL and the development team is likely watching video with him on certain plays.

The focus is clearly on puck management and getting his feet wet. He is one of the youngest players in the NHL and that's a lot to handle even for a guy his size. I think what he does this off season in training and how he is ready to start next season is the biggest area of development we will see. Does he stall or does he bust out. All comes down to his obsession to improve. MSL knows what he is dealing with

Like I sais before, the only thing Slaf need is more ice time.

His flashes are very very good, this guy have all thing to become a special player in this league.

I think he needs more maturity/experience/confidence and that comes with each season to come as he gets older. He's 18 and it's just not easy to come into the NHL at that age. There is a huge trend if you look at the last few drafts.

More ice time is not always the solution. His momentum/confidence is very important at this stage and you might derail it with more ice time. MSL is not Ducharme. He will give him more ice time when he feels he is ready for it.

We would have much bigger problems if our 1OA NHLer cannot put up points on Junior players.
It's interesting that you would even take into account his numbers at such a short tournament given how you tend to ignore his tournament production against adults (Olympics and WC).

I’ve taken the biggest possible L on Slafkovsky when they drafted with the 1OA the guy who’s biggest career achieve was putting two goals on Kazakhstan and looking really fresh against Canada. So don’t you worry.
He didn't score twice against Kazakhstan. At least get your facts straight when trying to be a smart ass.

Yes, I am sure that it was the game against Kazakhstan that convinced HuGo to draft him and not scoring 7 goals in 7 games and being tournament MVP at the Olympics while playing mostly on the 4th line of a team that wasn't even considered a contender, or the 9 points in 8 games at WC while being totally misused as a screen guy on the PP.

I am also sure Slaf values that game against Kazakhstan over his silver medal from the Hlinka Gretzky Cup and his bronze medal from the Olympics and his second place in the Finnish Liiga.

He is learning a lot of small things and try to implement it to his game while still adjusting to NHL pace. In those small details you can see he is successful.
Now watch what he did against Columbus

Anyone in this thread who thinks Slaf can play in a top 6 at this moment are completely out on this one. He should have been sent down after 9 games and let him progess here.
How many different people including professional skills development staff have to repeat that not being ready for a top 6 role yet does NOT mean that the logical move must be an AHL assignment.

There are 12 forwards playing in the NHL, not 6. With a few exceptions, young highly talented players started in the NHL in the second 6.

Oh, and by the way, the AHL assignment won't change that. When guys come up from the AHL, guess where they go? Yup, bottom 6 to start.

I don’t understand the thought process of putting him on a line with Evans and Pezzetta and playing him 8 minutes a night.
He played 12 minutes though and he looked the part. Having an 18 years old who can play on the fourth line and generate some offence is rare.

What he did in tournaments before he was with us is now irrelevant. We drafted him. He’s here. We’ve seen him in almost 20 NHL games now. We have to figure out what’s best for him. Playing on the fourth line with bad linemates and limited minutes is just dumb. Bergevin era dumb. I really hope these guys know what they’re doing.

They are making him into a better person! He's got to learn to grind

Metrics. It bedevils me at my job. Statistics are only one criteria in assessing a player's development. I have to trust MSL's opinion. He interacts with this young player everyday. He can tell by both watching his on-ice performance (in games and practices) and his interpersonal dealings with this important part of the team's and his own future, whether Slafkovsky is being overwhelmed. I'll take his opinion over the army of key board general managers here who probably have never played or managed sport at a professional/elite level.
Normally agree with your posts. This feels like a classic appeal to authority imo. You don’t have to have had played or coached the game at the NHL level to give a good opinion. Otherwise, why are any of us here? We’d have to value Grant McKagg’s opinion or Michel Therien’s over posters here because they’ve done it before? I don’t think so.

Marty is not perfect and has flaws of his own. I don’t think anyone believes he is intentionally messing up Slaf, but there is no good reason for 10 mins a night. You can try to dress it up and sugar coat it all night long. The most important aspect of an 18 year olds development is “ice time”, without it, development stalls. If he’s not good enough for 14-15mins a night he’s in the wrong league, if he is, but this is Marty’s master plan in teaching Slaf he is doing it wrong. I don’t care if Marty talks to him everyday.

I believe we do. Laval needs to get it‘s house cleaned also. Our future pipeline is running through there and its a gong show right now.
This is nonsense imo. There is nothing to worry over about sending anyone to the AHL. This is just a means for deflection to justify keeping him up. It’s a load of shit, Laval is struggling and so are we, more at 11.

You're wrong and it's not even worth arguing anymore. You're wrong. Slafkovsky is not going to play in the AHL, get it out of your head.
