I am OK either way with Slaf attending the WJC. With all of the current injuries however I doubt very seriously that he is allowed to go.
I prefer him to stay with the Habs but I don't think it would stunt his development to go to the WJC. In 2 years it won't matter.

These goalposts are moving as fast as you can type!
He said Slaf is not thriving a couple of pages ago.
I asked him what are the units of measure for thriving.
No answer, ... he is lost, his arguments do not make sense.
Meaning, it appears there are no goalposts at all. :)

World Junior Championship with Mesar & hopefully Nemec. Don't screw this up HuGo.

Let Slafkovsky go represent Slovakia and gain experience as the leader of the juniors national team. Keeping him in Montreal is NOT the play here.
Wow.

So there are three entities involved here.

The Montreal Canadiens, Juraj Slafkovsky, and you (@PhysicX ).

According to Martin St. Louis today, the Canadiens want to keep Juraj here in order to have continuity with him and because he is doing very well in their opinion adapting to NHL play.

Juraj Slafkovsky told reporters today that he prefers to stay with the club and continue his progression to be the best NHL player he can be.

You (@PhysicX ) want Slafkovsky to play in the WJC for you. For Price sake why? Do you have him in a pool or something?

What are the chances your clear and arrogantly worded directive takes precedence over the player's and the club's choices?

Suppose you were the administrtator of a university. You have this science student Phuraj who you admitted to your school under-age because he is pretty exceptional. In fact, you had the first pick of all high school students for early admission, andyou picked him first in the world. He is now busy learning Quantum Physics and making progress every day, though not top of class yet. Phuraj would like to continue his progress to soon become a top student at the university. However, you are being petitioned by fanboys of Phuraj's to interrupt his school year for four weeks in order for him to go compete in a high school physics competition. These fanboys are claiming that if he does well there he will gain confidence and this will enable him to learn Quantum Physics faster/better. You don't agree due to your experience forming students for a living but the onlookers are demanding you do this and just declare that keeping him in school with his classmates "is NOT the play here".

Seriously, what the fudge would you tell these people?

"Get a clue"?

"Shut up"?

"Mind your own business"?

"How would you know what THE PLAY is?"

I'm curious how you would handle this interference in your work and in your relationship with your student. Somehow I don't think that "Sure, coming right up" would be your reaction.:laugh:

My post obviously implied Slafkovsky wants to go to the WJC... If he doesn't want to go, there's no problem.

So if he did want to go and the club thought he should not, you would side with the player?

Does that work for everything else?

"Coach, I wanna be on the first line".
"Kent, I want 14 minutes per night and Marty is not giving them to me. Please over-ride him".
"Guys, I won't be at the rookie dinner tonight. I gotta go to a Slovakian reception with my old buddies Filip and Jiri. It will be a great experience and give me a lot of confidence".

Why it has to be a so polarizing debate exactly? There is no wrong decision IMO, going to the world would be a nice opportunity for him to dominate this tournament, have fun with his countrymates, have a shot at a medal and give the fans an incredible good show. I really dont think Slaf would lose the good habits and the experience he gained so far at the NHL level by going there for 2 weeks. On the other side, if he stays with the Habs and keeps progressing well, thats fine too.

I posted a recent RDS clip where it's obvious by what he says that he doesn't want to go (I want to be a better NHL player, no info about tournament, etc)

It's four weeks away from the club. Not good.

Thought about it some more, and no.

You said "Keeping him in Montreal is NOT the play here". This implies you know better than the club.

Not sure why you spend time thinking about it. I know what I wrote and implied, and have put it in words for you. If you don't want to believe it, and think I would go against both player and organization in pushing him to go to the WJC, don't care.

Didn't go through the thread, so I did not see the clip.

Yeah the guy is able to go live by himself in another country at 15, speaks Slovakian, decent English and some Finnish but he’s stupid.
Of course, he’s not dumb. It just looked to me like another level of trash talking and hyperbole that this forum is known to produce and it’s just hilarious for that reason.

I generally don’t care about pretty passes but if the player’s biggest flaw is his inability to make productive plays it’s obvious that it will be the focus of the analysis.

I don’t need to focus on developed and established NHL players because we generally have an idea what they are and of what they’re capable.

The debate around Slaf is two-fold: whether he was the right choice (this topic is settled and shouldn’t be reopened for a few years) and whether his development is coming along properly.

For the latter topic, it’s clear that I believe currently he is not capable of making productive plays so, naturally, I don’t consider touches on rolling pucks to be all that impressive in the big picture (however — the user above FF de Mars made a good point about that and I’ve acknowledged it).

Otherwise, following productive discussion with two other users yesterday, I’ve been convinced that my expectations for Slaf were too high and also too critical so now I turn it back on you guys: without rosy glasses, what do you think you want to see from Slaf to be satisfied that he is on the right track?
Give him some slack bud! He’s 18. Not playing much. First year in NA. First year in the NHL. If the coach and GM say he’s doing fine, he’s doing fine.

Your posts sound like Mathieu Bock-Cote opinion pieces. That’s not a compliment.

If Slaf improves over time to being a strong third-liner (16-18 goals per year) or more, I think I would be satisfied with the pick. Personally, I think he will develop into more than that. I predict he will be a 25 goal or more player and among the four most impactful forwards we have besides Suzuki and Caufield ..... even after the roster improves to the point we will be contending.
That’s a lot of words to say « top-6 »

I get Balki from Perfect Strangers vibes from him. Seriously.

OK, your position is clearer to me now.

You're ok with Slaf not going to the WJC for a third time, but only because he agrees with the club's decision that he is better off working his way up the NHL ladder. What you meant to say with the phrase "keeping him in Montreal is NOT the play here", is that clubs should not hold a player back from the WJC if that is his wish. The WJC is a special case that does not apply to any other developmental choice.

So next year, supposing the Habs by some miracle draft Connor Bedard, and Bedard insists that he be able to go back for a third time to the WJC, you would side with the player over the club that wants to keep him playing in Montreal. Really? Or is your rule that the moral obligation to side with the player only exists if the player is playing in the bottom 6? Or only exists until he has scored 10 goals or more in the WJC? Or only exists if at least 50% of the fans want him to go? Or only exists if 50%+ of the fans watched him play in the previous two WJCs and got their fill of his prowess?

Just tell me the moral rule to be used, what "the play" should be, Mr. Ethicist.

How about the World Championship in May? Is a club morally obligated to allow a player to go and leave his playoff team because the wish to represent your country comes before any other contractual obligation?

Can you add a poll into this thread with a question "Do you think Slafkovsky should go to the WJC?" or is it needed to post a new thread?

I haven't been able to watch recently.

How has Slaf looked?

Looking for honest opinions only.
Looked good on the PP last night. Had two one-timers on the same shift following a tricky keep in. Didn't generate much 5on5.

There isn't much stability in terms of his linemates ever since Monahan got hurt. Centers rotated on his line for a couple of games and even yesterday he started with Dach and then ended up playing with Evans again. He also was benched late in the third period yesterday for some reason in favor of the offensive wizard Armia :help:

Thank you kind sir.

IMO, let the kid go play in the WJC for his country....
