Don't comment on the player until after the season ends, SVP, because I say so!
Yes of course you say this but right before in another post you reach a staunch conclusion of "he is unlikely to ever produce."
Boy it must be nice to be able to get away with everything you say and keep your hands clean! Man you are lucky
Never wrong!

We really are stuck with you eh lol

It makes sense when your narrative becomes more important than being rational.
Gord Miller straight up said " no player is ready for the NHL this year", the expectations set by everyone we're this draft would likely have 1st liners but not superstars. My expectation is to see how he plays over the preseason adn then go from there from where I sit if I had to make a decision based on 1 game I'd say AHL.

Fan: "OMG this organization sucks at development, when are they going to put a focus on properly developing players!!!!!???"

Same fan: "OMG Slafkovsky is nothing like Jaromir Jagr, he's got no hockey sense, his decision making is bad and he's raw.".

How can the same people who constantly complain about lack of development, also expect players to be fully developed before even playing a single game.

That kind of duality must be a hell of an existence.

Both of him.

Slaf has all the tools to succeed, but he's not there right now and that's obvious.

Given Hughes's comments that they're drafting for the best player in 5 years, I'd definitely start him in the AHL. Especially if he can play there with a high skills guy like Mesar. Learn to dominate games.

You forgot the in-between quote from the same fan: "I expect Slafkovsky to play in the NHL this year and be amongst the best forwards at 18yrs old!"

If Slaf is not ready for prime time I trust this organization will make the right decisions.

Absolutely no need to rush him.
The team has a plethora of forwards and don't need to rush any young player.

After watching him last night it is obvious he has a ways to go.

Patience

Can always talk about Liiga.
The weird part is no one told him NOT to comment on Slafkovsky.

But maybe hold off on the career projections based on so little sample.

How anyone at this stage can actually offered an informed, never mind worthwhile, opinion on Slafkovsky's hockey sense is talking out of his ass.

The amount of hours one would have had to had put into watching him play before yesterday would be absurd and there's just not enough data on him to be able to say.

Well said. With me, I really don't care if it's AHL, Liiga, or NHL. I rather NHL/AHL and our roster is still in rebuild mode so he can learn on the job in the NHL if we choose to do so. It's not like we are a playoff team so yeah, he can play NHL and gain momentum/confidence as the season goes along. If not, AHL is a good start.

Still more games to watch before we decide. Patience is key but some fans want to act like experts after a rookie game or his 1st preseason game.

Largest area of development is adapting to less time and space and making quicker decisions. Also being defensive aware in transition. Those are things he can learn and it will depend on his hockey IQ on how fast he can learn it.

I've read about 3 pages of this thread at 3 different times.

First time @ExpatHabs was deep in Liiga analysis, ok gj on the leg work. Seems like a lot of grey area from people who saw usage etc, etc. Check a week later, still the same debate with same people.

You can dislike a choice, voice your opinion. Come back in 20 games of whatever level Slaf and playing at and look at something, still not a complete picture but at least it is a couple months. The game last night looked exactly like what it was, the first time that guys who havent played together, play together against a non intrasquad team.

I guess it just depends on the individual...

I wasn't blown away by anything I saw with Slafkovsky last night, but I don't need to be mesmerized because those kinds of things tend to just appear in flashes.

But for an 18yr old, raw kid...all I kept trying to picture was the kind of player I think he could become in 2-3-4 years.

He didin't wow anyone last night, but if I didn't know who he was...I would have thought he was an NHL player.

I know some people are going to respond that they have higher expectations for a 1st overall pick, but I don't really care about comparing Slafkovsky to other 1st overall picks.

I want him to be a better player in March/April than what he is today.

This is the ONLY measurable that matters to me
. Not how he looks in comparison to Connor McDavid at the same age or Nico Hischier.

I don’t know how much can reliably be extrapolated from his first game. Lots of things come into play, his first NHL game (even if just a pre-season game), pace, mental aspects, self imposed pressure, Bell Centre crowd, etc.

He asked a lot of questions which is good but he may have been overthinking a lot of aspects, which is also a normal step in his learning curve. I think Tatar mentioned that he tried to calm him down, which says a lot about how wound up Slaf was. He just needs more games to find his groove and until he does, there will be bumps on the road.

Glad that he has a hands-on coaching staff to help get through the rough patches. We’ll see how quickly he adapts in the next few weeks.

My guess is they'll give him his 9 games then send him down to Laval.
I always wonder why this is the go to game-plan with prospects.

If the they think he isn't quite ready why not just send him down instead of arbitrarily using up all 9 of his "pre-contract" games at once? Why not spread them out a bit over the year? Call him up during injuries, when he is starting to play with confidence or just when Laval and Montreal have corresponding schedules. It's one of the advantages of having the AHL team so close.

There is also a chance he could stick with the team later in the year if he has some time to improve and settle in down in Laval. Or maybe he doesn't get called up at all (which is fine) and they can have the 9 game option next year. Just always seems like you limit your options by doing the 9 game tryout when a player isn't ready for the big league.

He has huge upside and as a fan I want to see him reach it.

I don't know if he is mentally mature enough to be an NHLer at 18 and I hope management handles him properly.

I do expect him to get better as Camp progresses.

It's the go-to game plan with CHL/KHL/Europe prospects because after they leave their nhl club, they won't be able to come back until the end of their season.

It's not the case with Slafkovsky since he will be in the ahl if he doesn't play in the nhl. We will be able to call him up whenever we want. So playing him less than 9 nhl games to start the season is fine.

The levels of insecurity is going to reach epic proportions if Wright or Cooley scores or grabs an assist tonight.
I've been very positive and optimistic since the regime change but you can't blame people for sh****** their pants and being pessimistic towards slafs offensive potential when we are fans of the Montreal Canadians who have done nothing right offensively with any prospect ever for decades. That said bashing on him this early on in his career , after pre-season games where he dosent even look that bad is pretty whack

this was not a great draft, probably one of the weaker ones the last 10 years.
