Easy response. No commitment. :)
If you had to win this year, with what you know now... Who’s the one guy you pick on your team? Gallagher, Drouin, Hoffman or Slafkovsky. Tic, toc, tic, toc...
That's not the only question to ask though. The other one is whether Slaf will be a better player in 5 years if we play him in the NHL this year or the AHL? That depends on what we see in camp and in the first few games of the season IMO.

Then it’s not the player that makes your team better right now anymore. You’ll send down to the AHL players that made the NHL team.

My main concern is his weight.

How come he gained 15-20 pounds this Summer ? Is that all muscle ? Were the Habs physical training staff involved in that decision or Slaf totally overcame their advices and program ?

He reminds me of Eric Lindros who was also 6'4 - 230.

I’ve seen enough to know he’s already better than Drouin, Hoffman, Gallagher. He’ll be better than them now, in 3 months and in 6 months.
I don't think so. Hockey is played on the ice over many, many games and seasons.

Does he have the potential to be better ? Yes. But he has to prove it.

Do we keep him down for 1, 2, 3 seasons to make the Cup despite the fact he’s a Top-6 that should be in the NHL. Because winning the Cup is very important to me.
The point is that, if you want a better player right now, we should have traded the 1OA at the draft.
I don't know how long, or even if, Slaf needs to percolate before he's ready. I can't wait to see him in a few games at the start of the season.

I think the 219 number is from last summer. Slaf didn't attend the combine so he didn't have updated weight measurements for the 2022 draft. He gained the 15-20 pounds over a full year year which is more realistic

I don’t think he gained that much, he probably gained a little less than 10 pounds. Plus the off-season is the time to get your body right and gain the muscles back because they lose some during the season since they can’t train as much in the gym.

The guy was listed at 220 when drafted in July... He is now 238 !!!!!

Weight/Skating is not my concern. My concern is his transition to less time and space in North America. I believe he will be a major part of our core but it's going to take a bit.

One area which is a positive is his will to improve and put the time/work into it. Overcoming obstacles is a huge part of development. Many drown and become complacent. I think Slaf is the type to overcome it... just a matter of time

He was either a little more than 220 at the combine (since he didn’t do the tests and combine stuff, only interviews) or it’s a mistake and he isn’t 238!

He himself said in an interview during rookie camp last week that he was around 230 🤔

I guess we will see today.

He said that his real “median” weight is more 230.
Also some players like Ovi start camp at almost 250 and by the end of the season they’re at their optimal playing weight (like 230) before starting the playoffs.

When you are bigger, that means more mass of your body is water, so you have larger fluctuations. If his weight fluctuates by 5% based on water, then that is a 10 pound swing. He probably gained like 10 pounds or less of real muscle.

He also shrank by 1 inch this Summer...🙄

The height/weight data provided by NHL teams is mostly high velocity bullshit, the only data that can be taken at face value is the one coming from the combine, which only happen one time in a player career unfortunately.

They get 10 game suspensions with those hits, but those hits still occur. And the player who gets hit still has his career derailed because of it.

The point is to not put yourself in a position where your career is affected and is then mired by injuries.

Lindros was no saint. I remember a video of him tilting a slower opponent’s head, with his hand, before destroying him on the boards. Just for effect. Scott Stevens put an end to that cheap ass shit with prejudice!

Could be one of the reasons they took him over Wright. They may have felt Wright believed he had no flaws and didn't need to improve.
