Bad idea. NJD, wouldn't be interested in him, either. What they need is a G, Dman, or wing who can play right now. They've got young guys like Holtz and Mercer who will be good, but guys like Bratt and Hughes need some help now.

I don't think MN should consider trading Wallstedt, even though on paper it looks like a win for them( 20 oa for 1 oa). They need a young goalie.
Yes, valuewise, Wallstedt would be good, but I want him to grow in Minnesota, too.

IMO this is a case where you draft for need first. The Devils need a goalie in the worst way. I don't like the idea of drafting goalies so high up, but in this case, the Devils might have to, unless they make a trade, or plan on signing a veteran as a stop-gap for one or two more years.

However, which goalie do they draft in first place? That's the question.

You don't address something that could be easily addressed using just cap space by trading 1st overall pick. Doing that would be an insanity.

Noone in this group was acquired using top 10 pick:

The Devils got very unlucky with Blackwood's injury, signings of Bernier and Crawford but you don't get desperate and destroy franchise because of that.

this is a solid idea in a year, where the highest rated goaltender is expected to go at the end of the second round. the first overall pick this year will definitely not be used to draft a goaltender.

If Shesterkin, Saros, or Vasilevskiy could theoretically be drafted #1 OA (i.e. you had the certainty of what you were drafting and the goalie could step in immediately) they'd be drafted ahead of Shane Wright, especially for a team like the Devils who have a stacked group of forwards pretty much all of whom are 23 or younger.

If we do win the 1st overall pick, I would absolutely trade down to get more assets and at the same time, fill a need by selecting Slafkovsky/Jiricek/Nemec.

What I wouldn't do is trade down to get a goaltender, when MacKenzie Blackwood is still on the roster and the last time I checked, was still a good to great option between the pipes. The guy got injured and everything went south during that COVID chaos as well. It doesn't mean that he's turned into complete garbage because he's had a couple of a rough years. It's also his contract year and I would be shocked if he didn't put his rehab on overdrive in order to have a great year and get the deal he's looking for next summer.

I think we can make out like bandits if we drop from a couple of spots and use those assets next year if ever Blackwood isn't cutting it. We'd be able to acquire the goalie some are talking about and get to keep some of that as well.

I agree with you, however since goalies are extremely hard to predict and usually take quite long to develop, drafting a goalie very high doesn't seem to be an answer. And also, because goalies are very volatile (vide Schneider), trading very high pick or a top tier prospect isn't a good strategy because there's a significant probability that you will end up with worse or similar performance compared to the goalie signed as an UFA.

Lets not be greedy and just get a top 3 spot. Save any hope of 1OA for a lottery ball win next yr, ala NYRs with Laf

Wright's kinda reached the point where he's become super underrated around here

it's like people forget that the OHL didn't have a season last year

Didn't the Devils kind of screw themselves the last time they traded a top 10 pick for a goalie? #9 overall for Cory Schneider?

We did but that team had very little talent and was way more than a goalie away. If this Devils team landed a prime Schneider, they’re very very close to the playoffs.

No not really, CS played out of his head, the team sucked. He was a old broken down horse who was let out to pasture. Horvat or Nichuskin, would have done no more to help

We kind of did and even if we have a much better roster than when we moved the 9th overall pick for CS, I don't want to do that same mistake again.

We have Blackwood who'll be coming back from his heel injury, who's also a pending RFA, so I expect good things out of him. If we can't land a proven stud with our 1st round pick++, I'm keeping it and adding another blue chipper to the crop of blue chip prospects we already have and find another way to fix our issue between the pipes.

In a sense in that Schneider was good enough to keep the Devils from being the one the worst two teams in the league in 2015 and 2016 and having better odds at landing McDavid or Matthews. Who knows who they would have taken with the 9th pick in 2013, but Horvat is a nice player who isn't going to make a bad team appreciably better.

That’s more the angle I was going for. He was a great goalie for NJ but they needed to be bad, not good

the NHL ruled that a franchise can win the lottery no more than twice in a five-year span.
That isn't exclusive to the first overall pick: It means a team can't advance by reason of lottery win more than twice in a five-year span.
So Buffalo and Devils can't win
That does not apply retroactively.

Very unfortunate that Kovalchuk "retired" literally a week after the Schneider trade.

Everything from July 2012 until he left the Devils in May 2015 is a masterclass in franchise mismanagement. This is why so many Devils fans say Lou scorched the Earth on his way out - we had no prospects, the oldest team in the league, and a goalie that prevented us from getting top picks.

Would Jets trade Dubois for first overall pick? Or a top 5 pick if somebody slides.
Very doubtful the Jets are moving PLD. If the Jets are looking for a shakeup in the summer, it might actually be Scheifele (although unsure if the Org is really interested a big move like that as well).
