Value of: 2022 #1 overall if Devils win draft lottery

the NHL ruled that a franchise can win the lottery no more than twice in a five-year span.
That isn't exclusive to the first overall pick: It means a team can't advance by reason of lottery win more than twice in a five-year span.
So Buffalo and Devils can't win
Incorrect. Rule was not in effect yet when Devils won #1 . Pretty sure same thing with Buffalo last year ?

The consensus number 1 overall is a non-generational center, a position the Devils are set at for the next decade. The Devils score a lot of goals as is, and have a top five prospect pipeline.

I could see them trading the pick for Spencer Knight and something else or Askarov, depending on what the political situation with Russia (NOT INVITING COMMENTS ABOUT UKRAINE) is by draft day. I imagine this would work for the Panthers/Predators.

If not a goalie, I could see the Fitzgerald agreeing to trade the pick for Brady Tkachuk or Matthew Tkachuk (if a long term deal were worked out ahead of time).

As it stands now, it’s a distinct possibility the Devils end up with the pick. Interested to see what fans of other teams would be willing to trade for it.
Fiala(contract agreed to before trade) and Wild's 1st.

I do agree that NJD might look at trading the #1oa, which is something that rarely happens. Wright looks good, but good like Hischier, not even like Hughes. With Mercer also being a possibility to play C, NJD are doing fine at C. They are young, and talented.
I could see them trading down a couple of spots and picking the best Dman available, also, but you run a risk in doing that, and missing your guy. I don't see a team paying more than a 2nd to move up a couple three spots, especially in a draft where there is no clear cut dominant player(or two).
2022 is shaping up to be an indifferent draft year.

Just draft him, centers can move to the wing relatively easily, especially early on. Pittsburgh drafted Malkin, Crosby, then Staal and that worked out just fine
Staal asked to be traded, partially because of the logjam at C. How is that "working out fine"?

They can always trade Eriksson Ek, although that shouldn't be their best option.
Bad idea. NJD, wouldn't be interested in him, either. What they need is a G, Dman, or wing who can play right now. They've got young guys like Holtz and Mercer who will be good, but guys like Bratt and Hughes need some help now.

I don't think MN should consider trading Wallstedt, even though on paper it looks like a win for them( 20 oa for 1 oa). They need a young goalie.

Pens got three years of Staal at ELC prices and then were able to trade him for Brian Dumoulin, Brandon Sutter, and the 8th overall pick in 2012 so they didn't totally walk away empty handed (obviously that package would look better had they taken Trouba/Forsberg). But Staal did help them win a Cup before moving on, so that worked out alright. They nearly traded that pick for Jack Johnson which would have made perfect sense at the time, but they opted not to focus on need.

Hypothetically, I'm sure Wright and his agent might be counting down the days on the ELC if he were taken by the Devils. But three ELC years might be too much to pass up and they could trade Wright later rather than feel like they need to do it before the draft if the offers don't make sense.

Montreal's 1st and Florida's 2023 1st.

Seriously? Yes, absolutely.

I'd be all over a Meier deal. Even if we don't end up with 1OA and the pick is 5-9OA, I'd easily move a package like Smith + 1st for Meier.
Habs aren't adding another 1st when they'll pick top3 themselves... Especially considering Wright, Cooley, Nemec and SLafovsky are similar prospects

Aho is under contract for two more seasons at $8 million and then he is a UFA.

Meier can sign a $10 million qualifying offer for next season and walk straight to UFA.

edit: sorry, Meier's $10 million QO will be the 2023 offseason

If the Habs are confident Wright is the best prospect I could see them adding a late 1st to secure Suzuki and Wright as their centers for the next 8+ years.

I think the Habs would be more inclined to trade the Calgary pick instead of Florida though, and the Habs may be fine with Cooley or someone else.

Habs will keep their 3 X 1st rd picks and draft Cooley easilly. They'd trade a 2nd to go up to 1st from the 3rd OA place, but nothing more. We aren't talking about a sure fire top3 player here

Don’t intend to get into a pissing match, but I think Shane Wright is about even value for a winger on a fairly pricey contract who is comfortably leas than a PPG player. I can’t speak to the optics of it from an Ottawa standpoint though.

You might think that, but I find it extremely unlikely the General Mangers in Ottawa or Calgary would think dealing either Tkachuk for the 2022 First Overall was a wise move.

How do the Canadiens have three first round picks?
Guy was talking about the CGY or FLA pick. We won't trade any of them, especially not to go up what, 3 slots in the draft at most? Not the cost usually, won't be this year either

The Florida pick is 2023. Montreal only has two first rounders in the 2022 draft. I agree with you that it's absurd to suggest trading a 1st round pick to move up two slots. Nobody would ever consider such a thing.

Depends on the draft and Calgary's 1st rounder is looking closer to #30 than #20. Sometimes "first rounder" sounds a lot sexier than say 28th overall pick or that there's this large barrier between the guy taken 28th versus the guy taken 35th. And it sounds like 2022 isn't the deepest draft.

St. Louis wanted Jakub Voracek in 2007, so they offered #9 and #24 to Edmonton for #6 and were turned down since there was a perceived drop after the top 6/7. Boston offered #5 and #37 to Washington for #4 in 2006, but the Caps turned it down after the Bruins said they would take Backstrom.

Garth Snow pulled a Ditka and offered up his entire draft (notably #4, #34, #65) to Columbus for #2 in 2012 and was turned down. There was a rumor that Florida offered #2 and Dmitry Kulikov (four years removed from being a 1st round pick) to Colorado for #1 in 2013. New Jersey offered #6 to Columbus for #8, #34, and #129 in 2015.

San Jose traded #2 and #85 to Nashville for #3 and #29 in 1998.

The 1999 draft shuffle might not be apples to apples since there was no consensus #1 that year. Whereas it seems like Wright is close to the consensus #1 pick. Depends on how big the gap a team would feel between Wright versus the next group of players.

They did get like 6 years out of Staal though. Then they also got a decent return for him. Granted I think they would've rather Sutter actually be better than he was, it was still a decent haul.

Guess it depends on what is on the table via trade, but I wouldn't pass on a guy because you think your center position is set as of now.

Definitely open to moving this year’s 1st but only for something around a young goalie or right handed defenseman. Don’t see the point or need for adding a winger at the cost of a top 5 pick.

Cossa + our 1st this seasons. Probably going to end up around 8-9th overall
Tempting but Devils need a goalie ready for next season . Devils Likely missing out on all of - Slavkovsky , Jiricek , Nemec at 8-9 would take more than Cossa in return.
Say Hellebuyck for example… Jets never do it unless they go scorched earth rebuild but that’s a deal I can see Devils making

I don’t think it is that absurd. Late 1sts often amount to nothing.

Most scouts still have Wright as the clear #1. If the Habs feel Wright is the best, why not give up a late 1st to get “your guy” and be set at center with Suzuki and Wright for the next 8+ years?

As recently as a few years back they were "set at centre" with Suzuki and Kotkaniemi. Nothing is carved in stone.

Fair. We don’t have a top nhl goalie to offer unless you believe Ned can regain his rookie season form. Cossa is arguably the top goalie prospect out there so I couldn’t add much to our 1st this season though. Maybe Hronek with one of your meh D added?
