It's 1 thing if he has to stretch to catch the ball of not. It's another when he's stretching towards the thrower so he catches the ball one 1 hundredth of a second faster. The timing might work out once a year so that extra split second gets the runner, but you're going to cost yourself more than that by doing it. I would tell him to stretch to a point where he'd comfortably on, anything more than that is asking for trouble for very little gain.

I agree wholeheartedly. Footwork is so crucial to succeeding at first base and it's part of the reason why I value having a good defender at first base. I always loved watching Smoak play first base and found him to be very underrated in that regard. Sure, he didn't have range, but he more than made up for it with the amount of throws he saved with his footwork and glove alone. I hope Vladdy can prove me wrong, but having Biggio and Bichette on the left side with Vladdy at first concerns me a bit.
