Having a team that consists of all three Bernese clubs to save the tournament in Davos is a thing that a lot of their fans probably can't comprehend. But awesome that this is possible.

does anybody know whether Olofssson and Pesonen still play with Davos or do they join Berne Selection where they would belong to

True enough that Team Canada had to pull out..understandable why so I hope next year Canada will be back .. as for the 2 replacement teams, I would be interested to see how they do..and the 2021 Spengler Cup tourny will be fun to watch as usual..

yes I saw that too, as far as i remember he was in the red wings training camp didn't make the team though but was pretty decent I guess

Cancelled?

Yes the tournament won't happen this year. There was apparently a Covid outbreak within the roster of HC Davos. I was never really a fan of the tournament myself but it did a lot of good promoting hockey in Switzerland among people who didn't follow the sport before. So its kind off a shame they had to cancel it two years in a row. Its also a blow to HC Davos who usually generates a sizable part of its budget with the ticket sales and tv rights of the Spengler Cup.

as of right now it is stil a go

Slovan Bratislava did not travel to Davos, the club informed. The official announcement is expected within minutes.

women U18 in Sweden has also been cancelled, the NHL postponed antother 14 games, It seems that the WJC is the only sacred cow that is not being led to slaughter

The WJC is probably just "to big to fail" in Canada. Its a huge cash cow for TSN and they would always find a way to make it happen somehow, even if it was without spectators. As for the other tournaments, I guess the situation is just to dire for them to be played right now. Hospitals in Switzerland are hard on the breaking point again with the spread of Omicron, so its maybe for the best to cancel even if it sucks for those who were looking forward to the Spengler Cup.

I guess it'll be tough to organize any sport events in January, there will be uncountable positive cases I guess. But maybe it's the beggining of the end.

don't get me wrong I understand the descision and am totally aware of the situation of hospitals in Switzerland. It is, however, a little strange that the announcement was only made today, it was foreseeable. And yes I also agree that WJC is too big to fail albeit for dubious reasons. Another Old Year's week without the Spengler Cup sucks, for me it's been part of the holidays for decades and I'll miss it. Unfortunately, the WJC is not an adequate substitute for me and I'm not even going to start with the whining of our North American colleagues about the time difference ;)

I am a Canadian citizen and have been for my whole life. I have never lived in a different timezone than the Pacific. I make the Spengler Cup work because it is my favourite hockey tournament when the Canucks aren’t Stanley Cup contenders. And that’s usually. So I love the Spengler Cup, no matter the 3 and 6am games or whatever. I hate that it’s not happening. Again. f***.

I apologize for the generalization of course there are many hockey fans in canada who appreciate the Spengler Cup. iI was more a reaction to the numerous posts regarding theNHL's decision not to compete in beijing, saying that the broadcast times would be suboptimal anyway. I mean when I want to watch the best swiss players the normal puck-drop time is between 1am and 4am....
