So what is number 1 national sport in Russia and how is Russia strong in it? In other word, what is a point trying to discuss this in this topic?

It doesn't count. Best of the best weren't there. And even if you count that sh*tty win, still Canada won much more.

Seriously, what the hell is this panic about? We medal almost every year, we beat top nations every year, Canada is just better this year, they have 10x times more players, rinks etc, no wonder they can ice a better national team. We’re fine.

10 years without gold. Nothing to worry about. It is good to be mediocre in the best five all the times, right?

Of course it’s not good, but it’s not like we’re in some deep crisis losing to everyone, every year we’re competitive and get to the medal round getting close to winning, this kind of loss is rather an exception to the rule

Not sure. This year team is mediocre. Bad shors, slow plays. Askarov was terrible. I can name only Podkolzin as a good player. And still, 17 years and 1 win, 10 years and no wins - this is real result.
When you say that: Ah OK we didn't win but we not the worse you don't plan to win, you plan to be mediocre.

You do not see my point too. Russia is very strong in MANY-MANY sports. Hockey is not our nathoinal idea like it was in USSR. We won't dominate in hockey. As BTW no other team does!

Other side. Small Lithuania with 4 mill of ppl owning top teams in basketball coz it's their nathional idea. It's their sport. Caucas region bringing Russia many golds every time coz it's their nathional traditions. Why do you think hockey it's Russia's sport? Russia is not Soviet Union. We develop everything, even American Football. And we do win a lot of gold in a lot of sports, on WC and Olympics. Just your wishes are too high maybe? About hockey? We must win Canada every year? Or what's about our coach, no? Who couldnt find answer and words to our team but ''men, 3:0 it's shit, go on''. I like Larionov so much but he should shut up sometimes. :D

Hmm, hockey was not number 1 in USSR under your definition either.

Yes, 10 years without gold but literally Russia was several bounces away from Gold a number of times. Medaled 9 times in the last 10. US and Canada only 6. This is amazing in my books. Add to that how competitive team Russia was in these last 10 years - incredible achievement.

I think we need to calm down, nobody expected this team to win and we lost to Canada fair and square, let’s at least keep our medal streak going tomorrow

I had other impression, this team was very hyped esp after Karjala.

However, unlike with 2000 team, which was pretty strong this group has not been as impressive to me.

According to the IIHF you have 790 rinks and 100 000 players. The numbers for Canada are 2860 rinks and 560 000 players. In a few years there will be 1000+ rinks in Russia and with that number of rinks up to 200 k players should be possible. There are 360 rinks in Sweden anda bit more than 70 k players

I understand that some Russian people cry when we lose, coz we get used to win too much, but it's just a sport. I just said look at those games where we lost the gold in the finals and you will see it has golden color.

But ofc it's Putins' fault hahaha. Navaly is zero in sport as well as in politics. Navalny will never become president of my country (even tho I supported him at start).

About our attitude to wins... 2012 year, we won amazingly mens WC no loses, smashing everyone. Slovakia lost 6:2 in final and Slovak people meet their team as heros as the winners of silver, thousand thousand of ppl met them in their capital... but in Russia just bunch of ppl greet our golden team. Why? Coz it's in our mentality to underestimate our wins.

Silver for you and bronze are shit? okay, go on. I think differently. :)

Of course losing is a part of hockey or any sport, so we have to accept it. But when they lose by such a big margin, it is an embarrassment for everyone involved. Without the prospect of an occasional championship, people lose interest altogether.

Seeing as though Russia has been going downhill in pretty much all areas (except billionaries, corruption, etc.), I guess one cannot expect more. Larionov is a winemaker (and a former great hockey player), but certainly not a hockey coach. Most hockey officials are corrupt and do not understand the game. The whole system just isn't working, many Russian parents simply can't afford to have their kids play, I've also heard that "blat" and corruption is relatively widespread in roster selection. The old Soviet days of dominance are gone, as is the ideology and the social system that made the former success possible. I would not be surprised if this trend of poor showings continues, to be honest, under the given circumstances. The system in Russia has to change in order for hockey to get better, imo.

last year loss in final hurt more, they should have won gold. With this year's team a bronzemedal would be good. No panic guys :help:

Good luck today in the bronze game, tough but I’m sure with the arrival of Miroschenko and Michkov your next few teams will be really good.

As someone interested in Russian hockey affairs I had a question, over the last few years it seems as if Russia has started to have more and more players with Tatar or Caucus sounding names (Mukhadullin, Khusnutdinov this year for example), has hockey grown in popularity in these regions? I don’t really remember that being the case 20 years ago?

There's a general trend of more kids from rich families getting involved in hockey in Russia, since only those kids can actually afford to play. This is a serious impediment to the Russian hockey system. Hockey is popular all over Russia so I don't think that has to do with it. There's the factor of corruption or "blat" in roster selection, but, again, it doesn't only apply to kids with roots in Tatarstan or the Caucasus.

I believe Russian hockey is moving in the right direction. Up front this is one of the better skating teams I have seen top to bottom. The individual skill was excellent. They had a very young defense who should have 4 defensmen returning next year. Not to mention defensmen are jumping up in the rush for the first time in forever, clearly a change in philosophy. Askarov needs to be better.
