NHL Mock Draft 2021: Owen Power to Sabres as we pick for every lottery team (and predict trades)

14. Dallas Stars: Corson Ceulemans, RHD, Brooks-AJHL
This pick comes with a few caveats. The Stars will lock up Miro Heiskanen for the long haul, whether it be through a bridge deal or a long-term contract this offseason. After that, there are question marks. Will the Stars be able to re-sign Jamie Oleksiak this offseason? Will John Klingberg be in Dallas beyond next season? If the answer to those questions is no, setting up Ceulemans to join Heiskanen, Thomas Harley and Esa Lindell would give the Stars a strong top-four. If the Stars have the opportunity to take a true difference-making forward, they should do it, but Ceulemans would be a strong selection, especially if Klingberg leaves in 2022. Ceulemans is an offensive defenseman who needs to do some work on his defense, but his skating and playmaking abilities spew great upside. It works out, too, because the Stars can afford to be patient with defensemen. -Saad Yousuf

I'm the conductor of the Ceulemans train and this is the pick mother f***ers.

Not because of all Saad's speculated reasons though.

That gif of Nill’s reaction is just f***ing priceless.

What a perfect re-enactment of our expressions after every OT game this season

Ceulemans looks good, though 14 may be a bit high. Saad’s reasoning is dumb.

I hate when people take a prospect and assume we can somehow plug them into the lineup a few years from now for a player who is good now. It blows my mind every time someone looks at Thomas Harley and assumes he's going to be as good as Klingberg, so we can just trade Klingberg away now before Harley has even touched NHL ice, do people get amnesia about how prospects work or something? Doing it for someone who hasn't even been drafted yet is even more ridiculous. This isn't the NFL, and defensemen develop less quickly, and are less predictable in their development than forwards. That's why you get norris winners drafted after the first round, but the vast majority of high end forwards are taken top 5.

I think there was discussion about Othmann a few pages back if you wanna search that up.

Craig Button has us taking Brenna Othmann. Any of you draftniks have any opinions on him?

Meh. Not 'meh' he sucks but more like 'too high for 14th overall.' Solid shot, good vision, and covers a lot of ice with his passing. I've seen people criticize his skating. He's not fast, but he glides pretty effortlessly along the ice. I know Saad has DAL picking Corson Cuelemans, which I wouldn't hate. Aggressive in all three zones: what's not to like? But I'd push my chips in on Fabian Lysell. Lysell on a future line with Hintz is the shit of nightmares for opponents. The tempo he pushes, on the perimeter and in high danger areas, is bonkers. I've seen very few players as gifted on the forecheck (something Dallas doesn't have much of) as this kid is.

This would be my pick

Anybody else see Kent Johnson falling? Seems like a dude that could randomly fall with teams getting more comfortable drafting goalies in the first round. There's always a few GM donks even in an easier draft: seems like things to get really nuts with this one. Wouldn't be surprised to see several reaches between Ceulemans, Martin, Lambos, and Svozil.

Reading the Athletic, which may or may not be the bomb of a source, they polled several scouts. In keeping with this draft, a few thought he would go top 15, a few others thought no goalie would go anywhere near that high.

I feel like there’s a good chance this draft will be all over the map and nothing like any of the rankings .
