Acknowledged but I still think that Deni will be the better player with a significant margin.

Possibly, both seem to be play drivers who like the puck on their stick.
Do you see Denisenko paired with Barkov or Lundell if he stays long term?

Agreed. Albeit a very small sample size, I thought Deni showed had some flashes. He needs opportunity / quality ice time to really allow his full potential to be seen.

Also no idea what $/term Garland will command, and how that could possibly impact the group / CAP going forward. If they had not just resigned Duke, I'd be all for him on board.

Remember, next year, assuming a season similar to this past year; Swaggy will need to be paid. Also, Tipp's and Hepo's ELC's will expire requiring new deals, if their performance dictates.

And that's not even mentioning Barkov.

Rumors of 3-4 years x $4 to 5 million. Which may be the same for Swaggy in a year.

We have nearly $34 million in projected cap space for 2022-23 right now:
$30 mil once Bennett signs.
$25 mil with Garland added

Barkov hopefully takes a small discount, $10.5 million per.

Should leave $14 mil for Swaggy, Tipp and Hepo.
Year after that though, Huberdeau, Weegar, Knight and Deni are all due new deals.

Hornqvist + Gudas gone = $7.8 mil in cap, which is almost all of Huberdeau's new deal or most of Weegar's + Knight and Deni's bridges.

We can take a 1-2 year shot here but still be smart about it if we have a lot of depth deals ending in the next 2 years.

It's time for us to be aggressive and go for it with Barky, Huby and Ekblad are still in their primes no?
We can mortgage some future to push us into the 2nd round or beyond.

What moves you got in mind?

I don’t know man… I rarely speculate on deals…

But trading a first and two seconds for Brian « freakin’ » Dumoulin is just terrible value in my mind…

And trading Denisenko (our biggest wild-card and most talented young forward) so we can get Garland and send Stralman’s contract out… It’s pretty pretty bad in my mind too…

Not against finding a good winger like Garland, or trading for a D… But I’d rather pay less… Or if I’m paying a premium, I want a REAL player… Not broken Dumoulin or opportunistic Garland… :)

One difference is cap and money. With Bob's contract, trying to re-sign Barkov and possibly Huberdeau, ELCs and early bridge contracts are valuable, especially since it sounds like the cap freeze will last a while.
I'm not saying we can't let go of any of our young guys, but at the same time, I'd be wary of "handing out prospects like candy" because we'll need those cheap contracts if we want to be competitive beyond a really short window.

For sure, addressed some of the cap stuff in a post above.

Timing is everything but looking at the Atlantic going forward, our 3 best players are in their prime now.
We should take all advantage of that, we keep waiting and teams like OTT, MON, DET are getting better.
We are better than TOR if we be aggressive now and we've shown we can hang with TB (Kuch makes a big difference) but they will lose some quality depth this year.

Everything screams take a shot now and see what happens, already been reports Zito is looking to make big improvements. Wouldn't mind seeing him make a statement this/next year.

Dumo has 75 playoff games played in the last 5 years. 2 Cups
Plays 22 mins a game and 2:30 mins on PK.

He played 29 mins vs NYI in game 1
Played 32 mins vs NYI in game 5

he isn't broken, I view it as a Muzzin like move TOR made, not a similar player physically but PIT fans views him as the guy who's helped Letang the past few years. If he was 34-35 years old then sure, but 30 years old still has a year or two of prime hockey. We're looking at Tank who is riddled with injuries as well, although, not really sure of his cost to be honest.

Off-set the years of the picks, 2nd in 2023 then.
Recently he has missed a fair amount of games but he's still just 30 in September, has a ton of playoff experience and logs 22 mins a game.
Plays nearly 3 mins of PK a game for PIT, we need help there.

We took Hornqvist here, full of injuries albeit in a different type move.
Acciari is full of injuries, there's a reason you need these type of guys, willing to sacrifice the body.
Horny could convince him to come if PIT starts to re-tool on the fly.

I understand what Dumoulin brings, but that's too much to give up for a guy who might miss a lot of time during these next few playoff runs. If it was for someone younger who hasn't been banged up as much, yeah go for it. I'm with you on Garland though, I would add a 1st even and take out Hepo, give them a lesser prospect.

Could be anyone that happens to though, whether a young mid 20 year old or a guy in his 30's.
Ekblad injury happened.

Dumo played big minutes vs NYI so it shows he was healthy again.

But who's going to give up a prime aged top 4 D capable of playing 22+ mins?
Jones is one of few right now but we likely don't have the one big prospect outside Lundell to get it done.

Q will probably stick with his m.o. which is shuffle the lineup from time to time so hard to say about that.
Regardless, the Cats need ELCs and cheaper bridge deals when they have $6.575mil as dead cap, Barkov's new contract, etc. Tippett's ELC has expired at that time so he's out of that realm. Lundell, Deni and Gildon/Ludvig are the saviors of the Cats' cap issues imo.

Not that I necessarily disagree, but Ott, Det, Montreal, Buffalo have a long way to go to catch us. We can take a shot either this season, or in 22-23, and still keep an eye on the long term future. We can still win Cups with our core past their primes, Pittsburgh did it, even Hedman is 30. But TB can possibly win more Cups because they have a great team top to bottom.

Yeah buy Dumoulin is injury prone now.

I think if we can sign Oleksiak or Murray, they are a notch under Dumo, but just keep drafting and developing and make smart opportunistic deals when they present themselves. We can be a juggernaut for a long time as long as we don't shoot ourselves in the foot.

Long time, no talk cats.

surprised we didn’t weaponize the fact that Seattle wants Dreidger to add some size up front. Right now our forward lines are
Verhaege Barkov Duclair
Huberdeau Bennett Tippett
Vatrano-Lundell-Denisenko
Marchment-Acciari-Hornqvist.
Lomberg

good offense but I think some grit could be useful. I would have liked to add Dickinson

I agree we need the ELC's but just looking at the structure of most deals ending in next 2-3 years, the long term cap is set to take a shot now.

2022-23: currently $34 mil, obviously less with Bennett + potential other add/Stralman gone etc
2023-24: projected $57 mil, obviously goes down big with Barkov deal alone

We can still be smart with cap flexibility in next two years. Zito seems to be solid on the depth signings so far, have a good feeling Bakov's deal is widely considered a steal as well ($11.5 mil max imo)

Not that I necessarily disagree, but Ott, Det, Montreal, Buffalo have a long way to go to catch us. We can take a shot either this season, or in 22-23, and still keep an eye on the long term future. I agree you can win with cores on their way out of their primes, but why wait? They're peaking now so try and win 2 Cups instead of one when they're older and possibly nearing the age that injury concerns start to happen as you alluded to with Dumo.
I don't even think Dumo has be an all star here, just play his shutdown role and help the PK.
Ekblad, Weegar and Forsling will do most of the heavy lifting, as they should be doing.

OTT is prime for a big move or two if Melnyk opens his wallet, he kind of said he wants to compete very soon.
If they can convince Hamilton to come and then trade for a top 6 C, they could easily start challenging for a playoff spot this year.

Ya we both like big O, but looks like DAL may go all in and re-sign the core 4 on D. That's their identity it seems and they have some bright young stars up front who can score now.

Not against waiting this year but at some point, we will trade a 1st haha, Zito looks like a shooter and not a passer.

Ellis to PHI
Patrick to Vegas
Glass and Myers to NSH

This.

Ryan Ellis just went for two projects… Two NHL players yes, but two projects… And his value is much higher than Dumoulin IMO

So 1st, 2nd and Kolyachonok is a very very high-price I wouldn’t pay for Dumoulin…

Not disputing the talent of the players, just the value of your deals ! :)
