Making a wholesale judgement on byfield based on points in 4 exhibition games is silly, but he's a big name and it comes with the territory.

People have already cited his performance from last year's wjc, and the top prospects game as examples of him not shining against good competition and this just adds more to the arsenal. Again, its unreasonable if people try to use this to project him as a bust or anything, but I don't think it's ridiculous that the trend has been brought up.

Either way, I think he's got enough ability that he should make the team. I agree that not playing for months is a factor especially for the younger guys. Seems like low risk, high reward to have him on the roster

Byfield as an NHL prospect projecting 2-3-4 years down the road could be the class of this group. My opinion, which means sfa, he'd be on the bubble to make this team based on performance. This team and tournament isn't about projecting the players down the road. He will be on the team .. We have to hope he deserves to be in the role they put him in.

Why is Drysdale playing with Byram? is he going to essentially be Byram's babysitter? don't mean that as shade towards Byram
This is a confusing comment. I agree that pairing them together is a little redundant but did you just suggest Drysdale being Byram’s babysitter lol? Byram was Canada’s #1D from a minutes played perspective last year in a pure shutdown role. He’s the best D prospect in the world. He certainly won’t need a babysitter.

yes absolutely
I would hate to see a more deserved player get cut.

I am and have been a Byfield basher after seeming him under perform last year.
I keep waiting for some supportive words from the coaching staff but none really comes.
You got me on the low risk high reward line.
BUT only because we have 14 forwards this year.
Still hate to see a guy like Jarvis or maybe a Clarke get cut just to save his ass.

We have an angry little elf here...

Most if not all of those guys will make the team, including your ole' pal Quinn. Just pointing out things that I've noticed. Sorry for having an opinion Bert and criticizing your boy.
You've made an opinion off a box scores of two players you're clearly unfamiliar with.

Last time we really seen either was 8 months ago, a lot can happen in 8 months. In the 2 games that were visible Clarke's skating has improved immensely.
Alot can happen in 8 months when no one has played?... I dunno, I think all this illustrates is that when no one has played for a long time a small sample size can distort the reality of players raw talent and ability. I like Clarke he is a good player, quick hands good release he doesn't have the creativity, hockey sense and vision of most of the elite players in this camp. Thats not something that can be developed while not playing.

looks like these stats Player Statistics have been updated.

Anyone else worried about Byfield.. Is that possible 1 goal 0 assists through the 4 games. He should be producing more than that. I think we are too deep to give him a spot and hope it all falls into place. I am not a Byfield basher. Good thing we get 14 forwards

Zero chance Byfield doesn't make the team. Don't read too much into stat lines for scrimmages.

In the first two, games Byfield underwhelmed a bit, but still looked good enough to make the team. At this point, all these opinions are getting somewhat silly. It's poster's cheerleading for a player that is affiliated with their team or town, or region. We haven't seen the last two games, so all we can look at it is an incomplete boxscore, and we all know how useful that is.

Sounds like Sebrango has been playin well throughout camp. Hopefully he forces his way on to the team, as the consistency of Rangers being on Team Canada has gone down in recent years.

I'm not really basing my opinion off of whatever happened in these last 2 games. Its everything before this. I dont think it is unfair for their to be expectations for him to perform. I also just mostly dont understand the he hasnt played excuse. He isnt coming in as the only player that hasnt played. He should be a dominant player for this team whatever excuses people make for him are irrelevant.

You can add me to the list of people that thinks Byfield hasn’t done enough to earn a spot with more deserving players that are going to unfortunately get cut. As was mentioned earlier, this is however a low risk pick. I do like the message it would send to other players about earning your way onto the team if he WAS released, but I don’t think it’s going to happen.

I also feel like Payton Krebs should be getting some of this same talk. I don’t think I’m alone in saying that he has been quite underwhelming in this camp as well. Or have I been missing something?

There were so many excuses last year...

He was only 17, Laf is older, his first World Juniors, etc.

All those excuses go out the window this year. If he makes it, especially given who has been cut, he better perform.

Because it seems like he's going to sit back and play a more conservative game..hence babysitting

I have seen Byfield play very well in a highly competitive situation so I dont believe that he wont when he starts getting more reps. He was really good against a stacked 67's team as a 16 year old in a playoff series. The covid break and quarantine is going to effect alot of players very differently. It makes the coachs job that much harder, which is likely why they wanted the extended training camp. Too bad they had to do the quarantine, I bet they would have way more to go on in making the decisions. I think because of this they will likely side more with past performances than immediate, but if it comes down to two players they see as equals coming into camp I am sure this small sample size will be the deciding factor. Either way the team Canada brass has some really tough decisions to make with how deep this camp is. I hope before everyone gets highly critical of their decisions they take all these variables into account.

The scrimmages can’t erase years worth of body of work. Byfield is one of the best forwards Canada has. I’m with Brian Burke though, he needs to use a longer stick.
