Meh. Whether Canada is in the tough group or not...there is a tough group to enjoy the games from. I get to watch the Canada games and then sit back and watch Sweden,USA and Russia battle it out as a neutral. That is a pretty good time to me. Also if Canada wins tomorrow they get the Czechs. That is not a really tough QF matchup.

Sweden v Russia was a fantastic game last night

I haven't been disappointed by a single Canadian player yet(maybe Perfetti and Harley?), and have been pleasantly surprised by a few like Pelletier, Guhle and Zary. I guess Byram's play has disappointed me a bit, but my expectations were sky high after seeing him in the Canadian camp. Still have hope that he will settle down. He has the talent, but is trying to make things happen a little bit too much.

I'm quite pleased with the timing this year. 7pm for this game, followed by the USA-Sweden game heading into midnight. Hockey Canada and TSN looking out for the east.

It will be interesting to see how the lines show against deeper teams, and whether Canada shortens its bench.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that the 3rd and 4th lines feasted against the lower lines of the weaker teams. Can they do that against the Finns?

I’d like to see Cozens/McMichael squash the Lundell line, and the Newhook line go off like the Byfield line did Tuesday. Krebs Perfetti and McMichael have been fine, but they haven’t been dominant; their production has come on the PP

As a Canadian I almost hope Canada loses versus Finland.

Too many easy games, too many blowouts, even considering COVID delays and lack of game time for many NA players this year.
They could use a reality check and honestly seem to do better (AKA win gold) many times they experience a loss in the round robin. Galvanizes the team for the future and wakes them up, makes them realize they're not invincible and need to play the team structure as well as rely on their individual ability.

That being said, this year's WJC crew seem to be a step above with no question marks up and down the roster. They don't "need" the wakeup call as other Canadian teams have needed in the past but it still may help them. As for "seeding" and "future opponent" concerns, well you always have to play and beat the best in any given round to be the best so I personally don't care who Canada sees in the medal rounds as long as they win.

Also, feel free to disagree but the overall quality in the other teams this year seems to be a bit below their usual standards but maybe that's just me + limited viewing.
I feel like we go that wake-up call already versus Slovakia. I want us firing on all cylinders heading into the medal round.

I hope people haven't forgotten how much Finland has beaten us at all levels the last five years. This is no easy out.

See, I understand that position but there's nothing like an outright loss to remind oneself that hockey is a nebulous game prone to bouts of extreme parity.

Regardless, go Canada go!

Being in this pool has put a real damper on this tournament for me. It could also set up for a really tough QF matchup even if we beat the Finns tomorrow.

considering the lack of prior games and a weak division there is some nervousness if this team gets behind and doesn’t react well.
This team needs some adversity but how about not on New Year’s Eve.

I took a second .. NFLD time right?

No, Atlantic. It will start at 7:30 in Newfoundland.

I think that it would be a mistake for Canada to shorten its bench. It worked last year, but that team had a clear fourth line that wasn't contributing offence basically until the gold medal goal and had one line providing the majority of offence pressure by far. Canada's depth players this year are contributing offence and more importantly still contributing and looking competent even when not scoring. We'll see what Tourigny does. I'm also hopeful for the Newhook line, which has looked threatening without really bursting out yet.

I think I’m with you. Canada has four top six lines and none of them are offence-only. It’s strength is the fact that all of them will hold their own and on any given night at least one of them will go off against a clearly weaker matchup. And it looks like Cozens is effective no matter who he’s up against.

What's interesting in the pre-game comparison between Finland and Canada is that, while both had perfect records, Canada actually hasn't trailed for a minute in the tournament.

That to me is where you really get to see what kind of character the team has.

I'd almost rather trail in a game prior to an elimination game so that we can see what they are made of and the team gets used to the time pressure on their collective nerves.

I would be perfectly fine with Canada going down a goal or two early in this upcoming game. You're right that it would be good to see what this team can how when it is facing some actual adversity. Of course if the team simply never trails or loses for the whole tournament, that it also perfectly fine... I guess.

No shortening the bench unless they are behind with 5 minutes to go. This team isn't built on stars, but on depth. Just keep rolling well rested guys out there and have the forwards play like mad dogs, chasing after the puck and shooting it at the net, then chasing some more. CAN doesn't have a Crosby, or even a Lafreniere, just a really, really, deep team.

Sooner or later they will wear other teams out.

I think the 4th line has been consistently one of the best lines...I think we can count on them to be good today as well.
