Anyone wanna take a stab at what the Game 1 lineup for Utica will be? Gonna look a heck of a lot different from tonight’s thankfully.
My guess is Utica gets back a somewhat improved Zetterlund Foote Bahl and Okhotiyuk. Their relative success in thr last few NHL games shoukd give them some confidence and incentive for the playoffs. Holtz I’m not sure if his NHL stint helped at all but he’s young even for the AHL and has to be looked at that way. With the NJ season over I expect we see a bigger influx of posters for the Utica games. Hopefully one of the goalies gets hot and Utica gets back to its early season success with a full roster.I won't give you the lines or D-pairs, but here's my guess at the 12 forwards and 6 D
Zetterlund
DeLeo
Holtz
Foote
Greer
Thompson
Gambardella
Gauthier
Schmelzer
Talvitie
Flynn
Clarke or Laberge I actually think Dineen prefers Laberge if it's a 12th forward he has to select from these 2. I think with the list I have there Clarke is #12/13 and Laberge is more physical and more defensively responsible.
Gauthier has been out since April 2nd with a LBI. He is supposed to start skating Monday. If he can get his legs under him in the number of days it takes before the play-ins are done and the Semifinals begin, he will be back in the lineup. He is actually a very key player for this team.
Thompson has not played since April 19th. Dineen said he won't play the last 2 games of the season this weekend. I am ASSUMING they are holding him out so he is ready to go in the playoffs. e have been told he is injured but I don't recall any explanation of any kind.
Both Gauthier and Thompson are important to this team come playoff time. I have to say given an option, Gauthier is more vital. His PK work with Greer is exceptional. His defensive play is also important. Dineen uses him for every key faceoff all game long.
Extra forwards:
*Clarke/or Laberge
Halonen
Irvine
Grasso
McGrath
VanWhye
Russo
Okhotyuk
Bahl
Wotherspoon
Walsh
Vukojevic
Extra D:
*Groleau
Theocharidis
Grouley
Daws
Schmid
* These guys are the extra players that help the team the most.
After them it's a crap shoot as to which guy looks good each game. None do such with consistency. The depth on this roster is extremely thin.

Zetterlund looks better to me now than he ever did as a junior aged player. He’s a good reminder that development isn’t always linear and if you stick your system with high compete guys that have some plus tools a couple will force their way into the NHL. THe Blake Coleman trail. Fitz isn’t wrong about wanting guys with compete But they also have to have some skills that project to thr NHL level to go with it. That’s easy enough to find in thr first couple of rounds but it is much tougher deeper in the draft and that part of his approach needs work. Shero seemed to have that figured out and the scouts are the same so no reason the team can’t recapture the Bratt Shara magic.I hope Holtz continues to be a key factor in the AHL despite being a nonfactor in New Jersey.
Zetterlund is a good reminder, considering he was mostly written-off as a high end prospect, that some guys just don’t put it together for a few years. Holtz is three years younger and it wouldn’t/shouldn’t be disappointing or surprising if he news a few years of development in the minors.

Correctamundo!@Bad Goalie just what you were asking for!
I've always been bothered that the official Comets website is Not Secure. Was just looking at the Utica Comets web page for the first time this season. It has always been very poorly run and they didn't fail to meet my expectations. This season may be the worst I've seen. Laberge and Gautheir have been with the team for literally the whole season. They are listed on the pictured roster, but there is not a picture of either of them. You mean in the months they have been Comets it was too much bother to get their picture on the team web site?
Daws isn't even there period!
A guy like Halonen, who is on an ATO and been with the club March 30th and will be here until the playoffs end, deserves to listed as a roster player.
I'd think it would be automatic for the players brought in from Adirondack to also be listed. most of them have been on the game day roster several times throughout the season and are now here for the duration. Hell several of them have scored goals or at least have points.
Post NCAA season acquisitions:
Brian Halonen (NCAA MIchigan Tech UFA signed by NJ 3/28 and assigned to the Comets on an ATO- 2G/0A/2Pts/11GP
Garrett VanWhye - NCAA Michigan U UFA signed an AHL SPC on 4/12, played 1 game on 4/16, and has been injured since.
Post season ECHL Adirondack Thunder acquisitions:
Tyler Irvine - 2G/3A/5Pts/19GP
Patrick Grasso - 0G/2A/2Pts/8GP
Jarrod Gourley - 1G/0A/1Pt/3GP
Tim Theocharidis - 0 pts but has played 8 games of the Comets last 16 games.
Chase Stillman, a 2021 1st round draft selection, will be coming in soon if he's not already here. Think maybe he can find his way onto their team roster page?
Imagine being someone who knows one or more of them, a parent, sibling, other relative, or a friend and wanting to check them out on the Utica Comets web page and they aren't there!
The Comets believe they run a class operation and they will tell you so without question, yet this how they manage their team roster on the web. I don't want to hear about Facebook or Twitter. This is the official Utica Comets web page and it sucks.
