yes the avalanche have fair better. The Athletic noted Ryan O'Reilly and Tyson Barrie.
Fully agree you have to hit on first rounders, but also need to hit on some guys outside of the first as well.

In 2009, 11 years ago. Since then??

the article was about drafts 2007-2016 as some drafts maybe too early to count on.

I think it is safe to say that the current roster was built on 4 homerun 1st round picks and then a lot of trades. Draft choices outside of round 1 have not been a factor at all in their success.

I'm up for getting him as cheap as possible. But tbh I think Byram is rated quite a bit higher than Turcotte at this point, so I think it's reasonably close to fair value. I would imagine that we might even have to add. And I would be willing to because Byram would add quite a bit to the future of our team considering our holes.

Thank you for replying! I wanted Byram as well. When Colorado snagged him at 4 I figured we would pick Turcotte at 5. He seems like a great prospect and

There are so many teams in financial problems with the cap. Just wondering if we could do smaller pieces (our first + Thomas even) to facilitate two years of Johnson and Byram.

With Johnson and Fraznouz coming back, along with Landeskog getting an increase to 7-8, they’re needing relief. Dare to dream maybe?

The Avs are going to have to pay minimum $6-$8 mm to Makar and the upper end of that to retain Landeskog. If EJ comes back, they'll be over the cap. They need to dump his salary in a bad way if they want to extend the opening of the Cup window.

So wait, based on comments, all Colorado has to do to fit Landeskog and Makars future contracts is get rid of Erik Johnson? They’re sitting pretty then. Easy these days to get a bottom feeder to take on that contract if they send a couple picks or prospects along with him...

yup, MacKinnon's contract is unreal.

I think it won't be that hard to fit Landy and Makar but I do believe Makar will get closer to 10aav then the low numbers people are expecting.

That being said they are also going to lose Saad and likely Kadri, plus whatever happens in the expansion. So I don't think it's fair to say they will "just have to get rid of EJ". Which is why I could see them putting value in someone like Turcotte who has three years left on his ELC and is ready to contribute to an NHL team next season.

And yes MacKinnon has a great deal. But Toews and Girard are also on fantastic long term deals for them and both are left handed Dmen.

After Kadri's suspension and Avs proving they can win without him, I can see Sakic shopping Kadri for younger cheaper pieces. Or exposing him to Seattle. Avs are in great shape with Mackinnon's sweetheart deal.

Edit: Seems I posted the same train of thought as Rusty. lol

Avs have $13 million in cap space next year with Johnson, if they can move his contract that's $19 million with only Landeskog, Makar, and Grubauer (of significance) to re-sign. I'm guessing Saad walks and Newhook replaces him.

Very little due to his work ethic and off ice issues

I wonder how much of those are overblown. We didnt hear much about it when he was potting 40 on the jets.

He seems like the perfect buy low candidate, with limited suitors due to his cap hit (which we could easily absorb for now.)

Only 23yrs old too.

Yeah. So EJ is a buyout if they can't move him which is a 2mm penalty for 4 yrs. And he has a nmc.

I think Landy getting 8, Makar getting 10, and Grubauer getting 6 should be pretty close to the numbers for their guys. That's 24 mil. Which is why I think Kadri also gets moved.

Makar’s raise alone is gonna eat up 10 of that.

There is zero percent chance that he signs for anything less than 10 million.

Back to the Kings....I would rather have the Kings current roster, prospects and cap space, than the Leafs roster, prospects and cap space.

Not saying the Kings will have a better record than the Leafs next year, (although with some key acquisitions and a big year from a Byfield, Kupari, Vilardi,
Kaliyev, could make a difference...Tkachyov could be a wildcard and help the PP and 3 on 3 OT) but the future bodes well for the Kings - especially if Blake can get 2 key players in here this offseason.

Remember the hype for Sandin? I would rather have Bjornfot and Anderson. Clague or Strand, even.

If I am the Kings and Blake, I make a run at Nylander. Leafs need some reasonably priced D and some draft picks back. They also need some bottom 6 grit. These are all things Kings have a ton of.

He likely doesn't get traded. They'd probably try to move the lesser invisible man

I dont think they’ll move Nylander - he’s the one guy that showed up and he’s on a pretty good deal as it looks today.

I think a Marner / Jones swap makes sense for both teams.

Say WHAT???

You're saying Quick, Martinez, Voynov, Clifford, Dwight King, Jordan Nolan, and Toffoli didn't factor into the Kings success (which I define as winning the Cup in '12 and '14)? I think you're out to lunch on this one.

The discussion was referring to Colorado not LA.
