The thing I saw with Clague is he had a spot waiting for him opening night, and he never claimed it. To me he just never could take the next step.

Here's another thing, if Walker doesn't get hurt, are we all still freaking out at him being claimed? We'd be in the same spot. Too many players, not enough spots.
I think what people are upset about is we got nothing for him. Did they try to trade him?

Even if that is true, I think your GM could have gotten an asset back from him from a team that needs a #6LD. Even a contender like Florida has a gaping hole there. I was even hoping my Flames picked him up.

Play him over Phillips, easy.

You guys are trying to make this difficult when it's the easiest thing possible. I don't know if it's a defense of Blake's reasoning or what, but in fact the deeper you go, the dumber the move looks.

Maybe there is a reason that we don't know, or maybe it's just a dollar thing. Unfortunately, he 's the odd man out. It's sucks and I wish Clague had grabbed the spot to start the season, but he didn't. I don't want Maata on the roster either but we're stuck with him with or without Clague.

This really makes no sense, especially when the Kings just picked Wolanin off waivers.

Did Blake cross the Finnish Mafia and have to make amends by employing Maata?

I'd say yes. GM's aren't known for just tossing guys way without first asking. I'm sure they tried to get something for Maata too. So if we got futures or a 7th for Clague everyone would be cool with it? I doubt it, and then we'd have a bunch of " that's it?" posts.

He may have, who knows? Then again, every one just passed on him because they had guys just like him in their system.

Clague is a 23yo D with 11pts in 29 games. He has all the tools to be at least a defensively sketchy #4/5 guy like Tyson Barrie, Brett Kulak, or Alec Martinez.

I would have offered up a 5th or even 4th I'm Bill Zito and my third pair LHD is friggin Kevin Canautton gettinf walked multiple times a game, while my best LHD Forsling is injured too.

I remain skeptical that Blake did his due diligence, and I'm not even a Kings fan with "myteamsprospectsbias". And I disagree that GMs aren't known for that. They're known for trying to sneak guys they like through waivers on the hope that other teams get caught off guard and don't have time to make space for the player.

23 year old that paid his dues. 11 pts in 33 games on a piss poor team and we lose him for nothing. This management group wants nothing to do with offense. Was hoping for Clague - Durzi on the PP units, but we'll trot a PK "specialist" on the PP in Roy instead.

If protecting Brown at the expansion was a joke, this is a kick in the balls for all Kings fans that wanted a younger explosive team. Same old BS when dealing with prospects. They say to be patient then this crap happens.

The NHL needs idiot GMs so other teams prosper...we'll... we got one.

How long has Blake been GM?

The only moves that Lombardi made prior to the cup runs that baffled me were Cloutier and Calder. After the two cups he dropped the ball with Richards and the trades for Bishop, Lucic, and Sekera sucked.

I am not happy with most of Blakes moves starting with the Kovy signing, Pearson for Hagelin, protecting Brown, losing MacDermid and now Clague.

Blake's been GM since the end of the 2016-17 season. He took over before the 2017 draft.

DL made 3 coaching hires - Crawford, Murray, Sutter.

DL made the playoffs his 4th season as GM. He won the cup in his 6th and 8th.

Blake has made 3 coaching hires: Stevens, Desjardins, McLellan.

This will be Blake's 4th season as GM. He made the playoffs his first season and the team has picked top 8 each season since. If the season ended today, they'd pick 11th.

Of course Gorton’s first move is to grab Clague. I’m sure Emmer and Muzz told Blakey that Clague was a pick of the old regime and not worth a roster spot.

LOL Clague over Maatta for me. I mean not saying Clague is Doughty or anything but he showed more offense and equal defensively as Maatta no. 4 years of crap from Bluc. Perhaps it is time to move on. No words.

Not happy about losing Clague on the waiver wire while Maatta is still dressing up, but I am trying to keep the whole thing in perspective. It is very possible that Clague wouldn't have what it takes to remain on the Kings for the long term. Especially given that they have Doughty, Walker, Roy, Clarke, Anderson, and Bjornfot locked long-term ahead of him and a myriad of prospects and stopgaps in between to fill in the rest. It is clear that Kings management would rather have Durzi, Wolanin, or Strand as the 6-7th guy than Clague and was done waiting for him. In the end, the Kings aren't missing much by letting him go, but man is it annoying seeing Clague walk while Ollie has a guaranteed spot next game.

Maatta has been 7th d while Durzi has been getting his shot.

Good point.

Super annoying that he was waived instead of Maata and we lost him for nothing. But like Telos said, would Clague really would have been able to stick with those guys coming up on D? Time will tell I guess.

The argument that it was a numbers game to explain the loss of Clague for nothing is a weak one. His performance in 11 games was good enough for a waivers claim. And there was no prospect better who was going to supplant him this season.

If he had continued to perform you could have made a trade when a guy like Fabre or Clarke was available in 10 months from now.

Which upcoming LHD was going to displace a left side of Anderson-Bjornfot-Clague?
