Forthcoming Feature Story on the Kings development staff:
We have had to omit the names, as they were going off record and did not want to reveal the lunacy they are forced to be teaching the young players.
dev pro 1 : "the entire process, it's much like breaking down the confidence, natural talents and abilities these young kids come in here with. We need to break them of any
individuality and the psyche they had of the prior successes they achieved - much of it, without ever being Reigned in or knowing a system. It's all about systems
and learning them, knowing them and executing them. The systems, while rigid, will form the foundation of being able to succeed and move on to the Kings.
If you are lucky enough to get that cup of coffee, you will skate a few days with the Kings. It's an eye opening experience. You will be told you may get to play a game,
but then again, you may be sent back to the Reign. But, you had the chance to be in a few practices. Management sees it as a great step. Todd may even talk to you.
Now, if you are lucky to dress for a game, you'll be lining up with Blake Lizotte. He's a cycle master. By now, you've learned to cycle as your number 1 skill, having
done this with the Reign. Just stay with the system, it's beautiful and works. Get pucks deep and don't do anything reckless, or unstructured, like skating to the net,
or taking pucks to the slot and looking for a dangerous chance. This is only for lines 1 and 2 and even though they do not do that, it's allowed for them to do.
So, get pucks deep, don't attempt any shot. These NHL goalies are tough to beat. We've found if you take a few shots, the result is that the goalie stops the puck and
gives it to a defenseman and we've lost puck possession. Remember, it's all about puck possession. if we have the puck, the other team doesn't. Cycle, cycle, cycle.
The 3 C's. Even though it's 1 C. Backcheck, once the cycling ends. It always ends. But, if we held the puck deep for 15 seconds, you've succeeded.
lately, we noticed that Lizotte is deviating from the cycle and trying to make plays. Even takes a shot now and then. We're going to have to sit down with him
and see what got into his mind to play like that. We have watched tapes and identified that Brendan Lemieux may be behind this. He was not trained by our
staff and he's going out there and going to the net, getting into dangerous areas and trying to score. We think he's been talking to Blake outside of the facility
and inspiring him to play like he did in college. It may be best to split them up. Todd is adept at breaking up lines that show any individuality or offensive
success. JAD was getting out of control last year on a line 4, with Moore and Grundstrom. They were making plays and scoring a few. They were getting
away from the cycle game. And where is JAD now? With the Reign. You know why we chose the name Reign? Most think it was Reign, as in Royalty or
Kingly. No. It was chosen that we 'reign players in, from their individuality'. Beautiful. huh?
This offseason, the staff put together a training video. We put a lot of work into it. We have over 30 minutes of footage, of players like Kaprizov,
McDavid, MacKinnon, Makr and other's that do not play the way we want anyone here playing. It's pretty horrific, the way these players
use their skills and abilities, to forego systems and often go it alone on the ice, making dangerous plays, dangerous passes, using too much
creativity. They do not always succeed, for that matter. Reckless, East-West skating is also some of the bad habits, they are utilizing.
The staff would be challenged to Reign in such players. Thankfully, these type of players will never play for us. It would also not be good for
culture to have any players like that. It may make the other players feel less useful. We consider that so many Kings went through arduous
regimented training, to play the way they do now. And it would not be fair to have a player like Aho, that uses individual skill for his success,
never have to have gone through our extensive training.
