I don't really care much about these rankings and tiers. Many of those journalists have a hard time really evaluating talent and skill outside of points because they've never played the game and don't recognize the subtleties. They don't really know what's difficult and what isn't but rather what looks smooth and fancy. There's also the market and linemate effect. Try randomizing all of the players on said list into random teams with random linemates in an alternative universe. Could you realistically see the rankings being the same? Not even close.

As opposed to the posters here...? It's a subjective subject. Much like naming the best albums of the year. Everyone values different things. Dumping on the journos for trying it seems lazy. Disagree all you want but I am not sure their qualifications aren't equal to yours.

You're missing the plot.

Journos are supposed to have more-informed opinions. That we have people on HFBlues with opinions that are actually more informed than so-called journalists is the plot.

We really don’t, though. People here may be more informed about the Blues, but 99% aren’t more informed about every other team in the league. When you are a league-wide reporter it’s not possible to nail every little thing about every team.

And some people care way too much about what national journalists think about the Blues.

Yes, they do and I don't get it.

Or...the plot is the journos know more about the rest of the league than people here.

Has the NHL explained yet why the Blues start so ridiculously late compared to other teams, or why we play about 4 games before November 8th? It’s ridiculous.

Getting hosed like the Islanders did last year, maybe we'll get a new stadium out of it too.

Not sure if it was ever confirmed or not, but I though it was heavily speculated that we've never wanted that many early home games that would conflict with potential Cardinals playoff games. And I'd imagine the league tries to accommodate as many of those requests as possible for the sake of ratings and ticket sales.

Who knew that the flaw in a 12-tier "model" that has Tarasenko outside the top 12 tiers was really sited in our own jealous hearts all along? What a shrewd insight

If the likes of Jim Thomas are publishing pieces laying groundwork for fans to accept the Blues not re-signing ROR, then this is probably the last year of the "window." Having a mediocre defense, this window is not actually open. They'll probably be worse than last year, and last year wasn't legitimately good enough.

Army will figure it out. Any of Schenn, Krug, Saad, or Scandella can be attached to a draft pick (round depends on which player and the season they have next year, obviously) and easily moved to create cap for a balanced roster after ROR is re-signed. Not worried.

I still think O'Reilly provides an X factor where I can believe us winning with a similar team, even if I feel it's unlikely.

If he's gone, though? I can envision Kyrou and Thomas taking another step. I believe in Perunovich more than most here and think he could become a top pairing in today's NHL, if he can avoid injuries. But even then it's hard to imagine this team winning it all without O'Reilly.

We don't have the superstars most of these perennial contenders are using to fuel their lineups. O'Reilly is one of those unique players who can in theory minimize the impact of those players to let a team punch above its weight.

That said I'd have a hard to imagining Armstrong failing to sign O'Reilly, since I have to think he feels the same way. We lost Perron but it's easy to see how we can replace his minutes. Losing Tarasenko this offseason will be tough, but we at least have some talented guys who can take those wing minutes. Losing O'Reilly means we bump up Schenn and Thomas, and have to find a UFA guy to play third line center and take PK minutes? And even if you do that, you're going to me missing so much in the lineup.

The organization has really done a great job at being competitive for an extended period of time and managed to get 1 allusive Cup. That said, it’s not sustainable forever with the cap. I’m not sure what the answer for ROR is but a rebuild feels closer vs many years away.

I don’t expect the Blues to be out of the playoff when the trade deadline happens but it could jumpstart a semi-rebuild if they are.

So random news. EA just released the top 10 LW and RW in NHL23. Blues have the 9th and 10th best RW in Tarasenko (88) and Kyrou (87)

Also, the notion that it was "the cap" that may decide not to extend ROR is pure management water carrying. If they don't extend him it was the decision of a man. Doug Armstrong will have decided it.

This is silly. If there was no cap squeeze DA would let him walk? You can criticize how we are allocating cap, but the squeeze is real. It’s why TB and Avs lost good players this summer. But you know that, it just doesn’t fit your agenda.

That's probably all we get. RoR and Thomas will be rated about the same if not a point or two higher. I wonder if one makes the top 10. There are so many great Cs, I can see RoR just missing with an 89 or 90. McDavid, Draisaitl, Matthews, MacKinnon, Crosby, Barkov are locks to be higher. Eichel, Bergeron, Point, Aho are probably higher as well.

I'm looking forward to this year's release. I get it every year, so it doesn't matter really. But they are hyping up things that fix a lot of my complaints about last years game. Namely, skaters can control the puck through tiny bumps better, D can't intercept passes behind them as easily, and passes will generally go where you intend them to better. Also seasons in franchise mode are more custimizable. I like to play through multiple seasons but 82 games + playoffs is a lot. I either have to sim or only play a season or 2. But if I can cut the season down, I can play a lot more seasons.

I usually sim the first 2 periods. Helps every game feel different. I also wouldn't be surprised if Buch was right outside of top 10 of LW or RW with an 88 or 87.

I'm kind of predicting RoR 89/90, Buch 87/88, Thomas 87/88, Schenn 86/87

Will this be the year EA realizes RT is elite?

What’s customizable about the seasons? Just the length? Franchise mode is the only mode I ever play lol

They haven't spelled out much. I've read you can play any number of games, add and remove teams, and change playoff format as the examples. Other than that they keep saying "unprecedented level of customization", As most of that has been a hockey game before, I'd assume there is more to it. All I really care about though is shortening the season..

From the P-D

If O’Reilly returns on a new contract with the same $7.5 million cap count, that leaves a mere $8.45 million in cap space to sign nine (or eight) additional players to fill out the roster.

A couple of the players you mention would have to go to sign O'Reilly.

It will be the decision of 2 men, Armstrong and ROR. You seem to disregard what ROR’s asking price might be. If he wants more money than they are paying him now or wants a contract over 5 years, thats probably something the Blues won’t do. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out next summer.
