What happens when he gets his knee shit on like what happened to Fabbri and instead of a nice fat 8 year deal he had that little 4 or 5 year deal?
What happens if he signs an 8 year extension and then scores 60 goals a year?

Fabbri was 2 ACL tears deep at 22 years old. Kyrou is currently 24 and has shown no indication that he is injury prone. He could still undergo several injuries, as could any player. But the odds of injuries derailing his ability to continue earning money into his 30s are much smaller than the odds that he breaks out into a truly elite, $10M player. Fabbri got $4M a year for 3 years without ever demonstrating a fully healthy season with the Wings by the way. Using Fabbri as the barometer, Kyrou would still be able to earn $10-$15M in his early 30s if he was hobbled but still capable of playing top 6 minutes.

There is risk in every contract decision. Taking $38M on a 5 year deal instead of $56M on an 8 year deal is $18M less guaranteed money with the chance to make up that $18M and more if you are still productive at 30. Taking the $56M over the $38M guarantees that extra $18M, but risks your ability to make $30 or $40M more in the future.

There is risk each way, the question is simply how much you want to bet on yourself. it's easier to bet on yourself to maximize future earnings when the "worst case" of a career-ending injury is that you "only" have $40M of career earnings to fall back on.

think i may get tickets for Nov 17th vs Washington so I can see Chuckie beat the Blues and armstrong.
Make sure to catch the bus with them and head out of town too, since you’re gonna have some scrub backup who had a couple game hot streak have you rooting against the team you supposedly like.

It's no biggie man, All Greiss has to do is win 4 games this coming season and he'll be the next savior of the franchise.

Its ALMOST as bad as going nuts over the zamboni driver.
My job in college was being the zamboni driver. I miss my “fans” who would inexplicably want me to sign a poster right next to the players names. I was always confused by those 8-10 year olds. 🤣

But I guess it makes sense now. Pretty sure the only reason my 6 year old wanted to go to skating lessons this past winter was so he could see the zamboni when it was done. Chicks dig the long ball and kids did zambonis. Must be one of those rules of life.

I don’t know if this is the appropriate thread to whine about ads on jerseys, but I’m using it for that purpose. I hate them. A lot. I know it’s pointless to complain because we knew it was coming and we won’t see them during games much, but I still hate it.

It's the end of an era, like when the first ads appeared on the boards/ice. Only this time it's worse.

On this topic major props to the Oilers for defying the trend and not putting ads on the jerseys and home helmets this season Report: Edmonton Oilers have no imminent plans to add jersey sponsor

Both JR and Srick say it’ll be done sometime yet today.

I love it. You can split hairs all you want about how Thomas may have deserved a bit more, but identical contracts for two buddies to keep them happy is fine with me.

I like how Armstrong is clearly maintaining a core for the future by committing to Thomas, Kyrou and Buch, and giving a vote of confidence to Bolduc and Neighbours as well by basically making them not available in trade talks. Let's roll with these guys moving forward.

I’ll even add onto that, Kyrou is at just about the perfect age for the team to maximize the value returned on a 8 year deal. He’ll be 33 at the end of the contract. So we’re getting all his prime years without paying for his decline. That’s a huge plus, especially for a guy like Kyrou who’s skating and speed play a huge role in his success. I can’t complain with this deal at all.

Very good streamline from 2015 Tarasenko contract to Kyrou 2022 contract. Similar production (tho Kyrou edges out in the lead Pace wise) defensive liability RWs who were around the same age when they signed.

Tho both play different offensive roles. Tarasenko was more of a Power Forward Sniper while Kyrou is more of a playmaker with a good shot.

This means at least one of Vlad/ROR is gone next year right? Am I off with that thinking?

I’ve been mentally preparing myself that Vlad is most likely gone regardless

Now the guys assigned to carry the team have gotten the money. Let's hope it turns out these guys are more special than other teams' talented cores when it comes playoff time, have more will, have more desire, because it's sink or swim time and both players have a long way to go.

I'd have liked to go either 1 or 2 years less on an AAV starting with an 8 or to have gotten the AAV down to about $7.5M if we were going 8 years. But I think this contract is ultimately right in line with market value and I understand why Kyrou wouldn't budge if we weren't offering 3 or 4 year deals that would let him hit UFA well before 30.

My excitement about locking up his full prime drastically outweighs my minor quibbles with the numbers. This is a fine contract if he continues to play at last year's level and it will be a bargain if he takes another step by rounding out a few weaknesses in his game.

Same deal at Thomas. Buch-Thomas-Kyrou for at least the next 4 years.
Buch just has 3 years left on his deal. Buch was an RFA when we acquired him, so his 4 year deal started immediately. However, I expect him to be extended at the end of that deal if the team is still competing. He hits UFA the same summer that Schenn, Saad, Faulk, Krug, and Leddy see their full NTCs become modified NTCs. Binner's full NTC will have become a modified NTC the summer before.

We might have to include assets to make it happen and we might have to retain some money for a season if it is Saad and/or Leddy that gets moved. But that is the summer where shedding salary becomes much more likely. If he is interested in an extension, we should be able to make it work.

I don't think we'll see that line a ton this year though. I think we see Kyrou slide into Perron's spot with ROR to see if some speed can add an offensive pop to that line. For as much as we love Perron, he didn't produce much of anything at 5 on 5 last year and that line was too slow to go up and down the ice against other top lines. If I were Berube, this would be my top 6

Saad-ROR-Kyrou
Buch-Thomas-Tarasenko

Let Schenn be the backbone of the 3rd line most of the time, with the exception that he can slide into Saad's slot with ROR and Kyrou when we are chasing a game and need to focus on scoring goals (Saad slides down to the 3rd line with Barby sliding to the center spot on the 3rd line).

Yeah, either Buch is on the top line to create an elite shutdown line and Kyrou is with Thomas/Tarasenko to make a pure offensive line, or they try to balance them out a bit. I bet we start with those you list.
