I have to admit that it's a bit amusing reading the main board thread and seeing Oilers fans being rather vocal about believing all they need is an upgrade in goal to beat the Avs. Hopefully Oilers mgmt thinks the same way. Gut what little depth they have to sign Kane (i.e. treading water, not getting better) and bring in a goalie.

OTOH Kane was actually very effective for them, and if they don't bring him back, you need your depth guys to step up to replace his production, and more importantly his apparent chemistry with McD.

Any way you slice it, they have a challenging off season ahead if they want to actually get tangibly better.

Reportedly not true. Kevin Weekes on radio saying if Kane re-signs with the Oilers the dollar figure starts with a 7, any other team it starts with an 8.
I am very, very curious about whether he'll get any term. Seems like most of the problems with him start when he doesn't need to be on best behavior

The Oilers have a bright future.

It would not surprise me at all if these two teams meet in the West final again next season.

A big key for their progression will be how well their youth can play next season. They don’t have near as much cap flexibility this off-season, as they did last year, but they’ve got guys like Holloway and Broberg pushing for spots. Can Bouchard/Puljujarvi take another step?

I really liked Ryan McLeod. I think they might have a 3C there.

With Koskinen’s contract up, I imagine Smith will be their backup now and they’ll bring in a starter. Maybe they gamble on Skinner, or trade for a legit starter.

I’m curious to see if they commit to playing McDavid and Draisaitl together full-time next season. It’s a tough decision, because it improves their depth to play them apart, but I also don’t think Draisaitl is as effective when he’s on his own line.
I don't think 110 points in regular season on his own line are too ineffective tbh, and he did it with guys like Yamamoto and Hopkins mostly.

Definitely agree with the prior part of your post.

The game is different enough that it is very risky. If a Euro coach wants a NHL job, they need to come over for an assistant or AHL head job first. That's why Sturm will be getting a head job before Jalonen.

Not just the game, but I suspect sports and locker room culture as well. I think there is a lot of decoding for Europeans to do.

He's saying that Jeff Blashill will (likely) replace Brunette as the head coach of the Florida Panthers.

I'm well aware what was written. I just don't get why they'd think Blashill is in any way an upgrade on Bruno. I really didn't like the job Bruno did in the postseason but I also don't think it was all his fault (there are some fundamental flaws with that roster that they'll need to address).

Thoughts on recent coaching news:

Sweeney and Neely firing Cassidy is them blaming him for Sweeney's terrible job. Just look at all the young players that have come and gone from the Bruins roster and done nothing in the league afterward. You can't squeeze blood from a stone, and Sweeney had given Cassidy less and less to work with each year. If I'm a team that's anywhere close to contention I'm falling all over myself to sign him. Vegas should be front of the line, but I hope he ends up somewhere in the East. Florida would be ideal.

I really like the idea of Trotz in Winnipeg. That's a team that has the pieces to be really good defensively - they just need a coach who is going to bring that culture and system. I think the fanbase there could get behind an Islanders style grind it out team if they were also winning.

Any team that hires Blashill as head coach deserves what's coming to them. He should be an assistant, not a head coach. It's amazing how the requirements of a lot of NHL jobs seems to be having had the job before even if you were bad at it.

Whoever signs DeBoer is instantly going to go on my list of least favourite teams. He's such a scumbag. I agree that he and Dallas deserve each other.

The NHL needs different kinds of thinkers in head coaching roles, but I agree most teams shouldn't take the risk of bringing over a European coach given the potential learning curve and cultural barriers. That being said, I think it would be a great move for a rebuilding team or one with nothing to lose - the problem is, would the top Euro coaches even want to come coach a rebuilding or otherwise crappy team?

Finally, I continue to be extremely happy that Nolan Pratt isn't being mentioned in any coaching rumors.

Afaik Florida is heading into major cap trouble. This year was their best shot.
The cap issues aren't that bad there. They have ~4m in room to fill out their roster (5 spots) with Marchment as the big loss in UFA. Hornqvist is likely the guy to be sent packing to clear up room if they intend to re-sign Giroux.

After this season 5.3m of dead cap falls off, and then Hornqvist is for sure gone. Hubi needs to be-resigned which will be ~10m. Weegar too, but that number is unpredictable now.

They have to navigate some stuff, but the waters aren't that bad there after the dead cap lifts off after next season. I'd also say odds are high they grab the Weber contract.

Not sure they need Giroux, I think I would get rid of Marchment, Giroux, and Hornqvist to shore up that defensive core. Marchment is a damn awesome player though, he reminds me of a Getzlaf-lite. Might be a one-year wonder, but I would take him here if Avs can't re-sign some of their UFAs.

I don't think they need him and the better move is to shore up the defense. First and foremost should be stapling Weegar to the left side and getting the pieces in place to do that.

Florida needs a RH puckmover then. A legit power play QB. If it were a few years ago I'd advocate for Barrie but he showed he's on a pretty serious decline now.

If they somehow snag Letang, that would be perfect for them.

Yeah but he's a left side guy through and through. When he plays on the right he struggles. He's the opposite handed TJ Brodie.
Before I switched to goaler, I was a right-handed defenceman playing the left side. I loved it! I know it sucks trying to get pucks off the boards, but it's amazing/super easy coming into the middle and firing a shot at net.
