Unlikely situation since I don't expect we'll actually get 2 compliance buyouts, but this is what I would like to see:

Compliance buyout Loui Eriksson
Compliance buyout Tyler Myers

Trade: Brandon Sutter (50% retained), Jake Virtanen, Nils Hoglander to St. Louis for Vince Dunn
Waive: Jay Beagle
Waive: Antoine Roussel

Sign: Tyson Barrie ($35M/5 years)
Sign: Tim Heed ($3M/2 years)
Sign: Anton Khudobin ($6.5M/2 years)
Sign: Tyler Ennis ($1M/1 year)
Re-Sign: Tyler Toffoli ($28.75M/5 years)
Re-Sign: Josh Leivo ($4.5M/2 years)
Re-Sign: Troy Stecher ($15M/4 years)
Re-Sign: Vince Dunn (after trading for him) ($9M/3 years)
Re-Sign: Tyler Graovac ($750K/1 year)
Re-Sign: Zack MacEwen ($900K/1 year)
Re-Sign: Adam Gaudette ($6M/3 years)
LTIR: Michael Ferland

WIN: 1st overall pick (Alex Lafreniere)

I know...unlikely, but let's dream a little.

Lafreniere ($975K) - Pettersson ($925K) - Boeser ($5.875M)
Miller ($5.25M) - Horvat ($5.5M) - Toffoli ($5.75M)
Baertschi ($3.33M) - Gaudette ($2M) - Leivo ($2.25M)
Pearson ($3.5M) - Ennis ($1M) - MacEwen ($900K)
Graovac ($750K)

Hughes ($916K) - Barrie ($7M)
Dunn ($3M) - Stecher ($3.75M)
Edler ($6M) - Heed ($1.5M)
Benn ($2M) - Rafferty ($700K)

Demko ($1.05M)
Khudobin ($3.25M

Team (as per cap friendly, which includes waiver penalties): $75.375M

Now, assuming we don't win the Lafreniere pick, bump everyone on the LW side up (can bump up Pearson to the Horvat line to keep Baertschi with Gaudette). Either way, this plan serves to clear the team of the pure garbage Benning has anchored the team with, it rebuilds the defense, gives us a very solid forward group that can provide offence and play an up-tempo game. Goaltending can be split between Demko and Khudobin, which seems to be the way many teams are going. The depth on the left side of the defense can take some pressure off Edler and help us keep him healthy. Right side is a little weak which is why I was okay spending the money to bring in Tyson Barrie.

But again, unlikely as I can't see us being given 2-compliance buyouts either.

I dont know why everyone likes the idea of a Bobby Ryan trade. We dont save enough to really make it worthwhile and we'd require Bobby Ryan to want to come here.

Eriksson and Baertschi for Schneider

We buyout Schneider, its 2m x 4y.

If they buyout Schneider, its 8m cash.

Eriksson/Baertschi costs NJ 7.4m total cash.

They save 600k and add two wingers.

We save 7.36m capspace.
We would have the Luongo, Schneider goaltending controversy as they both would be on the payroll again. Need to see if a buyout policy saves us from Ericksson contract.

I feel like you overpaid quite a few places.

The only reason STL trades Dunn is because they cant afford him, In this scenario, theyre adding likely more than 2 million..

7 million for Barrie is way too high. He wasnt getting 7 million before the announcement the cap is staying the same, and he's one of the unlucky few top UFAs who will be drastically affected by this news now.

Khudobin is 34 and played 30 solid games. He doesnt get 3.25 a year in a world where no one needs 34 yr old backup goaltenders, no matter how solid they are.

Leivo played 36 games, is coming off a major major injury, and we're giving him a %33 raise and term?

Stecher is in Hutton territory of not getting a qualifying offer due to the salary he's gonna command for the 15 min a night he eats up. He doesnt get a 1.15 million dollar raise, and 4 years!

In a scenario where we have 2 compliance buyouts and win the #1 pick you still came up with a bad plan.

In terms of what I'd like to see...obviously we need to get rid of a substantial portion of the junk on the roster - Eriksson first and foremost and then Sutter and Baertschi. While many may lump Myers in this category I don't think that's fair and perhaps more relevant no way the team gets rid of him after 1 year. Of course would love to move on from Beagle but with another 2 years left on that horrific contract I fear that will be impossible. Sutter, Baertschi and Benn all only have 1 year left, with the flat cap and COVID uncertainty my hope is that teams leery of any long-term contracts could take a flyer on each of those players.

In general I feel the team is generally in good shape offensively. We finished 10th in GF, 8th in GF/GP and 4th in PP % and it's not unreasonable to expect players like Petterson, Boeser and even Virtanen to continue to improve in points production. Where the team was fairly mediocre was in on the defensive side of the ledger, despite having excellent goaltending for much of the season. Our GA was 16th, GA/GP was 11th (tbh this is better than expected) and our PK was 16th. Our xGA was 25th. Don't have other advanced stats handy at the moment but the team didn't do particularly well in this regard. Part of this is a systems issue but a lot of it relates to personnel / roster construction.

So for me this indicates that tightening things up a bit will result in an improved, better team. I see two specific slots where this needs to happen. The first one is that the team desperately needs a matchup C. Horvat has been miscast in that role simply because there are no other options and performed poorly. Gaudette needs to be heavily sheltered. The top-line will be going head to head with other team's top lines more as Petterson matures which will take some of the load off but I absolutely feel a strong defensive 3rd line C would do wonders. If we were to acquire one perhaps Gaudette is traded or perhaps he plays wing.

The other key (for me) is a LHD to play with Myers. As I stated I've surprisingly been ok with Myers - he probably has another 2 years left with the final 2 years of his contract being atrocious but he was nowhere near the disaster advertised. One strong shut-down LHD would balance out the projected pairings. While I was pleasantly surprised by Fantenberg he's more of a #7 than a top 4 defenceman. A perfect fit would be Brodin imo.

Edler's age was starting to show midway through last season and Rafferty has earned a roster spot, a 3rd pairing is the ideal spot for those 2.

So to summarize:
1) somehow, miraculously, get rid of Eriksson, Sutter, Benn and Baertschi
2) re-sign Tanev, Toffoli and Markstrom
3) Acquire a matchup 3rd line C and a shut-down LHD

Easy right? Not speculating on what happens if we win 1st overall as that simply will not happen.

Miller (5.25) - Petterson (0.925) - Boeser (5.875)
Pearson (3.75) - Horvat (5.5) - Toffoli (5.5) [Gaudette slots here if the team doesn't re-sign TT]
Roussel (3) - 3rd line C (3) - Virtanen (3.5)
Leivo (1.75) - Beagle (3) - MacEwen (1)
Motte (1)
Ferland: LITR

Hughes (0.916) - Tanev (5)
Brodin (4.16) - Myers (6)
Edler (6) - Rafferty (0.7)
Fantenberg (1)

Markstrom (6)
Demko (1)

Spooner buyout (1)
Luongo re-capture (3)
Petterson & Hughes bonuses (3.5)

81.326

Stecher - not qualified / traded. Gaudette is either he's moved as a sweetener for a team to take some of our junk or he's traded for Brodin or a shut-down C. Alternatively Toffoli is not re-signed and Gaudette slots into the 2nd line RW (which would free up more cap space). Some may think the UFA / RFA contracts are a bit on the low-side but with the current uncertainly I feel they are reasonable. The current situation could also benefit the Canucks in that a player like Toffoli will get shorter term than he would've under normal circumstances.

Compliance Buy out Eriksson
sign Tryamkin 1 x 2.2...........replaces Tanev. plays with Edmundson in a shut down pair. Defense is now playoff ready
sign Edmundson 4 x 3.75..........replaces and massively upgrades Fantenberg or Benn. Can play a shut down role
sign Richardson 1 x 700k.........never can have enough C depth. If healthy he goes to Utica for stints
sign Podkolzin 3 x 750k...........in March
re-sign Markstrom 4 x 5.5........top 10 goalie stays and gives us a reasonable term
re-sign Leivo 1 x 2.....................given another chance
re-sign Virtanen 2 x 2.5...........no brainer
re-sign Gaudette 2 x 2.25.........no brainer
re sign Stecher 2 x 2.375.......works so well with Edler. Would look at moving him if Tanev would take 2yrs at a discount
re-sign MacEwen 2 x 750k......4th line RW who gets to move up from time to time
re sign Motte 2 x 750k..........bounces like Richardson up and down for depth
re sign Graovac Brisebois Bailey and Chatfield for Utica

At F - Healthy Boeser Leivo Ferland and Podkolzin in March replace Toffoli and Baertschi (who is moved at deadline)
At D - Edmundson and Tryamkin replace Tanev and Fantenberg

Just nitpicking but you have Motte and Macewen taking paycuts after coming off good seasons.

Podkolzin is going to get the standard rookie deal of 925k.

I doubt Richardson takes that steep of pay cut yet.

Virtanen basically getting 20 goals bumps that number up a bit in my opinion.

I'm skeptical about the Markstrom number. I think if he takes that he's getting a NMC as well. Not necessarily a bad thing but it decides the next expansion draft protection decision for the team.

Trade Demko to Detroit to take Eriksson's contract. Draft Askarov if we have a first. Sign Markstrom 5-6 years, and offer him a NMC to take a discount. If Markstrom regresses halfway through the contract, there are 2 young, cheap goalies in the system to replace him.

I think Detroit is still planning on being pretty bad for a few more years, which makes me think they'll be fine going with Bernier/Pickard/cheap free agent option.

That being said their fans seem to pretty wishy washy on their goalie prospects so who knows.

The Barrie signing is absolutely atrocious. How do you compliance Myers only to replace him with an even worse contract?

On a down year Barrie still put up 39 points in 70 games. He's a good puck moving defensemen who will help improve our offence.

Myers is a bottom pair defensemen. Barrie is easily a top 4 defensemen. The fact that you equate them as the same tells me you don't know much about Barrie, or perhaps you just don't like him because he played for Toronto this year.

Lol. Apart from your weird lines and combos which don’t really make sense you have Markstrom replaced with Khudobin and a putrid, overpaid defence.

What was weird about my line combos? How don't they make sense?

And yes, I wouldn't re-sign Markstrom for the long-term contract that he's likely looking at. That will become a bad contract in a couple years and we can't afford that. Goalies tend not to age well, and while Khudobin is older he would also be much cheaper, come with lower term, and would only be expected to split time with Demko much like he has been for the past couple of seasons. The idea is to transition to Demko, rather than wishing upon a star and hoping that Markstrom doesn't regress into his 30's like every other non-HHOF goalie does.

Just to show where things are actually at with the salary cap, here is a realistic lineup based on where things are now. Not saying this is what I would do:

Ferland3.5Sutter4.375Virtanen3 Defense19.267

MacEwen0.8Eriksson6 Other7.538
Total81.13
Hughes0.917Stecher2.75
Edler6Myers6 Cap81.5
Fantenberg0.9Benn2
Rafferty0.7
Markstrom5.5
Demko1.05
Spooner1.034
Luongo3.034
Baertschi1.77(Buyout)
Bonuses1.7
[TBODY] [/TBODY]

No cap space for Toffoli, Tanev, or Leivo. Bought out Baertschi which moves some cap into the following year and there is only enough room for the EP/Hughes 2019/20 bonuses meaning the 2020/21 bonuses will need to be moved into the following season.

If we win the lottery, I'd look to sell high on JT Miller for Vince Dunn + or Brett Pesce +. Use that + to free up cap - let's say we dump Sutter. Let's also say we compliance Eriksson.

I like the Tim Heed idea, but only if we can't land another RH defenseman - would rather keep Stecher over him. The crop of UFA centers is exceptionally weak, so let's say we sign Namestnikov for the 3C spot. Waive Beagle. Let Tanev go, unfortunately.

Lafreniere - Pettersson - Boeser
Pearson - Horvat - Toffoli
Gaudette - Namestnikov - Virtanen
Motte - MacEwan - Roussel

Hughes - Pesce
Edler - Stecher
Benn - Myers

Markstrom
Demko

If we don't win the lottery (lol), trade Demko instead of Miller for futures, and go slightly more "all-in" - and target Sami Vatanen in UFA. Let Toffoli walk, keep Tanev. Trade the rights to Stecher for the rights to a similar RFA forward - someone like Ryan Hartman. Waive Benn too, and snag a cheap Fantenberg replacement - Jon Merrill? Keep Dominigue (remember him??) as the backup.

Miller - Pettersson - Boeser
Gaudette - Horvat - Virtanen
Pearson - Namestnikov - Hartman
Motte - MacEwan - Roussel

Hughes - Vatanen
Edler - Tanev
Merrill - Myers

Markstrom
Domingue

If the season is going well, trade Gaudette for a Horvat linemate - Brendan Gallagher is an UFA next year, and would be a good fit next to Horvat. If it isn't, trade Miller (and possibly Horvat) for high end young players.

Well, this has been discussed, but I think we should trade Eriksson for Schneider.

We dump Eriksson's buyout proof contract, and get Schneider's buyout friendly contract (2 million for the next four years). Eriksson will have his bonus paid by the time we can make trades, so New Jersey gains real dollars while they reload. Its the same length contract too.

We then buy out Sutter if we can't get a sub-2 million dollar cap dump for him. That's what his buy out is worth this year and next.

We end up with $24,333,461 in cap space, including Luongo's penalty and Spooner's buyout.

Not enough to bring in any key UFAs, but even liberal estimates for contracts for our free agents should be covered.

Baertschi, Benn, Edler, Pearson and Spooner's buy out are off the books next year, helping with Pettersson's contract (although we likely need to move one of Beagle, Roussel or Ferland to fill gaps).

I get the idea but transitioning to Demko is literally wishing upon a star when Markstrom was the MVP of the team this year. There’s no guarantee Demko will be a capable starter in the future. You even say how bad this team is without Markstrom and it was proven when he was injured. The only way it’s not smart to re-sign him is if his injury really affected his play

Because Markstrom masked a lot of problems with the team that would be fixed in this scenario.

Also, according to WAR, Pettersson was the team MVP.

WAR is still unproven. Analytics are helpful but they are not advanced enough yet. They are also incredibly easy to skew to prove any point someone wants to make.
It was quite obvious pettersson had a great season with some struggles but Markstrom was the real MVP, unreal play all year. Also MVP usually mask team problems
