Sweeney must really like next drafts 7th round depth lmao

That could well be it- nothing wrong with that if that is case. It is a 7th rounder, not many gems come out of those super late rounds so if there was a player or two they have their eyes on in hopes of a late round steal it's fine. It would have been nice to have some sort of explanation about it, though.

And to a degree I can appreciate that. These are people first, not assets, even when running a business.

Especially since it is probably a low risk contract all things considered. I didn't like the move and still find it odd, but then again, the chances of Miller making a full recovery and playing a meaningful role for the team seem very low to me. If he can and does, then it makes the contract palatable. If not, he gets LTIR'ed again and no harm done.

I actually don’t mind the miller signing. I wish it didn’t happen until later in the offseason, to give us more flexibility. If he is healthy though, he’s a rock solid 3rd pairing D. GIANT “if” tho.

By all assumptions tho, really could have signed him to a PTO and probably around $900k

I imagine that Covid really hurt scouting for many teams, maybe Sweeney has seen someone who he likes in the 7th round next year or maybe he feels there’s a better chance more hockey will be played and he can scout(especially outside of the USA, even tho he rarely drafted outside the USA lol)

It's not a huge risk, from the outside looking in we just see an overpayment/overreaction compared to what we are seeing in the marketplace. But all things being equal, the Miller contract isn't going to make or break anything. Let's say he gets his 1.25 million (i.e. doesn't achieve any other bonuses beyond making the team/playing a game), he's making about 550k more than the cheapest possible skater you could place on your roster (700k) to take the spot Miller would occupy. That 550k is not going to make or break the Bruins cap situation.

And look on the flip side, if Miller can return and be the same player he was in the couple years previous to his injury, it could be excellent value as he was a solid 3rd pairing physical defender.

I would have rather spent the money on Galchenyuk.
He would easily upgrade our 4th line.

And if I'm Alex Galchenyuk the last place I'm going is a deeper team where I'm going to be competing for a 4th line spot or worse.

He's now on his 5th organization in 28 months, doesn't take a genius to figure out he's on his last chance to save his NHL future. He needs to go somewhere where their is simply more opportunity for him to play, play with strong players (i.e. higher in the line-up) and in better situations that compliment his skill-set (i.e. offensive zone starts and PP time).

There's a reason he choose Ottawa. And it's not because he thinks it's a great team.

In terms of cap, don't the bonuses get applied this year whether he hits them or not? I wasn't always clear on this, but I thought even if he doesn't hit the bonuses, the Bruins need to have the space in case he does? Or is that wrong?

If the bonuses need to be accounted for... that's literally another million we can't use while we need to clear space to make any other move besides re-signing our RFA and possibly Chara.

For a management that said changes were coming, the team doesn't seem like they can make many moves with the current cap situation.

I agree with you, he will get all the opportunities in the world to play in Ottawa.
My frustration is with DS, we have lost out on so many FA signings and trades ( Nate Schmidt, OEL, Hall to name a few) and one can argue that we are no better than last season and another year older with our core.
The upside and potential value on the AG signing is huge....a potential 20 goal scorer for 1.05 million.
He loved playing in Montreal, had a decent year in Arizona as well.
As a young player, it must be upsetting to be traded so much.
Hope it lights it up when Ottawa plays the Habs.

As far as I understand, and I could be wrong, that unpaid bonuses do not count and each team has a bonus overage that they can have to account for this if it pushes them over, that I believe makes a hit on the next season's cap if it is used.

Sometimes that is the downside when your perceived to be a deeper team. It impacted the Hall situation too IMO. The Bruins couldn't offer the basically guarantee that he would be married to an elite offensive center in his prime. Hall could easily see that with Marchand attached to the hip of Bergeron, he'd either get an aging Krejci or Coyle as his center, and no guarantee of 1st unit PP time either (depending on the set-up). And him in Buffalo is all about setting himself up for a big statistical year for a big payday next July.

OEL the price Arizona were asking for a guy with a massive contract and very, very limited places he'd go to was insane. You'd think Arizona were dealing Lidstrom in his prime, not a decline OEL.

I don't know what happened with Schmidt. I do know the Canucks are very happy they didn't pounce on OEL as they got a comparable LD at a fraction of the trade price. How or why Sweeney wasn't in on this (and would pay more than a 3rd rounder) is a mystery.

I always wonder if teams sometimes will trade a player Bruins are in on to another team because the Bruins are a threat. In Vegas' mind maybe they'd rather the Canucks get the upgrade for cheap rather than the reigning president's trophy winner.

In some situations I can see it being a factor.

In this case, I'm not so sure. Both Vancouver and Boston got eliminated in the same round. And with Boston's older core compared to Vancouver's younger group, I'd be more worried about the Canucks than I would the Bruins if I'm Vegas. They got a good thing going with their core of Petteson/Hughes/Horvat along with their other young guys like Boeser, Demko, etc.

Perhaps knowing Miller's complete situation, it was a case of good will.

Why not extend that goodwill to signing Jake or Chara. Miller should have been a lets see skate in December or whenever they start the camps. Being the very first move by the Bruins was setting the bar for us in hindsight. It was not like he was going to be grabbed by another team.

Extending a PTO would be fair to an oft injured soon to be 33 year old. He has averaged 54 games a year in 7 yrs here. See what he can do and if he can even skate, pivot and take and give a hit. Unless he is being sent to the AHL for a leadership role and be ready if need be as insurance.

Anybody have insight on these UFA defensemen?

Ben Hutton
Slater Koekkoek
Mirco Mueller
Travis Hamonic

I looked at their numbers...

Hutton played 20+ a night for VAN in 2019 but seemed to struggle. Played about 19 for LA last year and seemed to do very well on a bad team. 6’2 LD, 27 years old.

Koekkoek can’t seem to stay healthy but is a great skater and was supposedly one of CHI’s better d last season. They seemed surprised he was let go, which makes me wonder if there are off-ice issues? 6’2”, LD, 26 years old.

Mirco Mueller, former 1st round pick has size and Youth, so why is he a UFA? 6’3, LD, 25 years old.

Travis Hamonic is a RD so he’s not ideal, but he’s an experienced vet, I’d be surprised if he couldn’t transition to the left side. That said, I wonder why he hasn’t signed? 6’2, RH, 29 years old.

I wanted Boston to go after Koekkoek when he was with Tampa. I still think there's a lot of potential there.

Back in 2011, the Bruins tried to acquire a 7th round pick to draft none other then one Torey Krug.

Couldn't get it done, and they signed their guy any way.

What is your perspective on why he made that trade? Do you think he is eyeing someone in the later rounds next year. Or do you just think next years depth and scouting will be better if COVID allows prospects to play?

My guess is that there wasn't anyone on their list they were truly enamored with and the Leafs had someone in mind that they wanted and they pulled the trigger.
