It’s not just need. It’s a huge need and the most important position in the sport. And the fact that there were a couple other players who you could argue were BPA

We have a need for centers at the NHL level now. Which player that we were drafting at 22 was going to be ready to play 2c now, or even 2 or 3 years from now? Chytil was drafted in 2017 and may not be ready yet.

Best wishes to the kid, but that concussion history is hard to ignore

100%. Hoping for the best, but those injuries are scary. Seems like he’s got a great doc on his hands. Seeing someone who superstars in other sports have seen? Says a lot about him wanting to prove the doubters wrong

I don't understand the comparisons to McIlrath who was an immobile sloth. Yes, both of those. Schneider can skate. Nothing wrong with depth.

Lapierre is going to be a stud and we're going to be pissed that we could have had a legit center prospect instead of the 900th RHD prospect in our system. I get BPA, but if you're trading up why wouldn't you address a real need?

According to who BPA? I would say Lapierre was (by the way who just went to Washington). Anyway, Schneider is a nasty tough dman who was slated for first round so not gonna lose sleep over it.

The Rangers had him at 12. They picked the BPA based on their list, not your list.

If Schneider was a lefty I dont think anyone would have an issue with this pick

but it’s still a very good pick
I don't hate the player, I hate the mentality that brining in certain players will make the team tougher while we continue to coach the team as if the boards and cycling don't exist.

I hate hearing "harder to player against" while we do everything to sabotage that.

A few thoughts here:

1. The Rangers-Calgary trade reflects the talks we've had around here about larger talks spurring smaller talks as a result of familiarity. But make no mistake, these two teams will continue talking.

2. The risk here for both the Rangers, and now Calgary, is that if Lapierre remains healthy he'll be a homerun pick. If he can't stay healthy, they'll both potentially look like winners.

3. The Rangers will be keeping very close tabs on their in-state neighbors to the northwest. And they will be stockpiling talent with an eye toward the horizon.

There is a reason the same teams are good every year.
I think it’s the fact that Washington wants to extend their window as much as possible. A safe pick doesn’t do that for you. You swing for the fences here. Worst case scenario, he busts and your window closes anyways. Best case, he becomes a star and the Caps contend for a longer period of time. Many teams can’t afford to take a swing on Lapierre nor need to

Calgary is eyeing someone specific here.

You'll get it when they come up.

I've done some research on him. And i get the thinking in a few ways.

1 - We have a pretty small D right now - Fox, Lindgren and ADA and we also have Zac Jones coming. I think it's very hard to get through four rounds of playoff hockey with half your D corp under 6'. I hope we are able to add guys like Miller and Robertson and possibly this kid within two years.

2 - Other than a big middle six center, the team needs to focus on size and truculence and speed.

3 - We are going to have to pay lots of guys a whole bunch of money in 2-3 years. Drafting kids that are hard to play against, can compliment your core and be affordable for years isn't a bad thing. Also, now that Staal is gone, our power play D options are incredibly limited. We need Miller, Robertson and possibly this kid to develop into tough PKers.

This all said, I would have likely preferred Khusnutdinov.

Two-way guy with an edge to his game, similar to Trouba in many respects.

ADA remains a prime trade candidate.

Balance, will be a big focus of this team. They are not going with a smaller, offensive-driven defense.
Do you see this as more a preemptive means
/insurance to moving Trouba and his salary down the road or if he’s knocking on the door they’d move one of Fox/Nils for him?

I understand fully capitalizing on moving Tony D, just curious if you know where they see Schneider potentially fitting in with the rest going forward. The former seems most likely to me.
