that’s some elite company , wow . Amazing to see Kaliyev on the list really shows that our scouts might be top 5 in the league at their job , once they are told to draft differently . 2019 is the best draft in Kings history and will shape our future for the next decade +.

calling it now Kaliyev makes the team next year like many before him and he will score ze goals !

ps. If Quinn just accomplished a feat like this and is in that elite company why is he not mentioned more or hyped more for the draft

Quinn is on a stacked team. With Marco Rossi leading the team.and Quinn tied for third in points.
I've watched him play very little but when I've seen him there wasn't much that caught my eye.

Imagine a Frk-Vilardi-Kaliyev line. Vilardi sees the ice so well and the other two are experts at getting open and unleashing bombs.

It looks like we should end up anywhere from pick 1 thru 7. So we should end up with one of;
Lafreniere, Byfield, Stutzle, Raymond, Perfetti, Rossi, Drysdale, Gunler or Holtz which is amazing.

For our second pick (#35 unless we trade up or ?) I'm hoping one of Mysak, Quinn, Lapierre, Jarvis, Perreault, Peterka or Sanderson falls to us.....

For our third pick (#45), unless one of the above players falls, I'm hoping for one of Barron, Nybeck, Simontaival, Foerster, Schneider, Cormier, Wallinder or Andre......

For our fourth pick (#55), unless one of the above players falls, I'm hoping for one of Niemala, Savoie, Jarventie, Niederbach, Kuhle, Hirvonen or Benning.

I'm loving this draft.....so many players with high upside and draft lists seem to be so diverse that I could see some truly great prospects falling to us.

Craig's list is interesting because it's different, but frustrating because it sometimes looks like a heap of hot takes with little explanation.

Whatever one thinks of Button, he bases his lists on what impact he believes the particular player will have in the NHL in 3-5 years (from 21-23 years old), not necessarily what order the player will go in the draft (his own words).

That's my biggest qualm with him with respect to prospects. A lot of begging the question.

Which I appreciate. Prospects are clearly his area of focus and I usually like his views there--I just wish he more readily expressed those 'why's. To his credit he's clearly not influenced by consensus--to his detriment he doesn't talk about why he feels differently enough.

I do prefer Bob McKenzie's list more so than Craig's, mostly because his list is based off of the general consensus from other team scouts.

Here are some of Craig's lists from the past couple draft years:

2017
2019

He had Kirby Dach at 12, who wound up going third, and Podkolzin ranked higher than him, among other head scratching names ahead of him.

While I agree and appreciate, he is 1) very reactionary after a tournament and 2) doesn't provide context for his choices.

When I have time I'll dig some examples.

I agree with this assessment as well, from my limited viewings (saw and recorded the prospect game, youtube vids) and when you also factor in his lack of size, I'd rather draft one of the many top forwards. If there was a legit elite defenseman, that would be different. While it would be GREAT to draft a #1 defenseman, you can't reach for one, if one is not there....the Kings are looking pretty good on depth at D. Sure, would be great to have an elite one, but you must draft BPA.

Bjornfot may well develop more offense. Also know that Jordan Spence (RHD, Moncton QMJHL) and Kim Nousiainen, (LHD Kalpa Liiga) are both 19 and both are having great seasons. Spence has been called the best defenseman in the QMJHL and was just named defenesman of the month in the Q...and Nousiainen had a good WJC with Finland and is getting top minutes as a 19 yr old in Liiga and putting up a lot of points, the last 2 months. These 2 players would go in round 2, if the draft was redone. The Kings had an insane draft and Yannetti and scouts put their mark on the next decade for the Kings, with this draft!

Turcotte, Bjornfot, Kaliyev, Fagemo, Parik, Spence, Nousianen. Unreal. Parik is having a great season in Spokane as well. All 7 of these, could possibly go before round 3, if the draft was redone.

Wheeler, excerpt on Spence:

Spence is already dominant at the junior level. Outside of a hard point shot, he has every offensive tool you look for in a modern defenceman. He’s an exit and entry machine with his feet, carving up the neutral zone and making opposing players miss with a series of fades and fakes. He’s mobile in all four directions, which helps him close gaps and pivot back on dumped pucks to win races without having to engage in man-on-man battles. He uses his stick as well as any player in junior hockey defensively, routinely breaking up plays with it. He can quarterback a power play thanks to excellent footwork, an ability to read the play and anticipate movement and a head-on-a-swivel approach to handling the puck.

Kind of like Matt Roy and Walker (to a degree) emerging and NOT the hopes of a higher drafted Forbort, Clague or Durzi emerging, a Spence or Nousianen may be the next Voynov / Visnovsky....but I think Clague still has a shot and Durzi may well someday too. The Kings will most certainly grab at least 1 (or even 2 D) in round 2, of the 3 second round picks this year as well.

Excellent takes as always PJB2!

I definitely appreciate the free coverage of the draft provided by Button, but I also know that he can only do so much scouting while juggling a studio job. Although if we ever saw an actual NHL team's list, I think our minds might be blown. I still remember the Rangers touting how they had 2nd round pick Ryan Gropp as the sixth highest forward on their list in 2015. That draft featured McDavid, Eichel, Marner, Strome, Rantanen, Meier, Connor, Gropp's teammate Matt Barzal, among others. Rangers had Hugh Jessiman in their top 5 in 2003 if I recall correctly.

What’s the latest news on the draft lottery? Seeing as how the regular season is basically done... any news on when they might have it rescheduled?

Apparently 2020 prospect Marco Rossi has signed with ZSC of the Swiss league, maybe this will be the way that future players circumvent the CHL/NHL agreement to get an opportunity to play against better competition.

Auston Matthews did the same. It's an alternate path for sure

I'm thinking like wink-wink agreements between team & player for the d+1 year, if the team doesn't think the player is NHL ready but obviously too good for the CHL, then some players will be able to comeback and play in the AHL for d+2, if they still miss the cut, they can stay over for another year.

Lassi Thomson did something similar last year after being drafted. Thomson just missed the age cutoff for the 2018 Draft and went in the 1st round in 2019. Instead of going back to the WHL, he played this season in Finland and then would be AHL eligible for 2020-21. Rossi is in a similar boat with a late September birthday. Makes sense for the player to get a paycheck in Europe if they can get it in a senior league.

Matthews was the odd exception where he played in Europe during his draft year. He was the somewhat unique case where he had just missed the 2015 Draft by two days, but he could join a European team after he turned 18 (he had to wait a few games before officially signing in Switzerland if I recall correctly).
