For as much as I love Lafreniere, there is zero chance that I am trading two firsts for him, even if our picks fall to 6 and 7. We desperately need depth among our skill players, and as the Oilers and Sabres have been busy proving, one world class player can't carry an entire roster. Injecting two blue chippers onto our roster right away is vital to getting this franchise on the right track.

Also, if we land Byfield, I would want him to stick here. No sense sending him back to the OHL to get 130 points against inferior competition - give him sheltered minutes here and let him learn by playing in the best league in the world. It's what the Bruins did with Joe Thornton 20 odd years ago, and that seemed to work out just fine...

I agree wholeheartedly with this post.

Only thing is they might not be onto our roster right away. Probably only Lafreniere, Byfield and Lundell are NHL-ready out of the gate. Raymond needs another year or two to gain strength, Holtz and Stützle likely need at least a year of AHL to adjust to North American hockey, Drysdale should be sent back to junior to dominate for one more year.

Edit: well, actually I would easily trade two firsts for Lafreniere if one was later. I just meant not 6 and 7. I'd do 4 and 20, since we'd still have another top ten. I might do 8 and 9, but they wouldn't accept that.

They got the donuts? Excellent....
If say the Senators were to end up after the lottery at 1 and 3. Obviously taking Alexis at #1, if Byfield goes #2 and scouts are convinced that Stutzle is both the consensus #3 along with being a LW at the NHL level, do you trade down because of the organizational depth at LW at that point?

No. I think Stutzle is an NHL centre.

No. I think Stutzle is an NHL centre.

Even if they think he's a wing, if they think he's the clear best player, you take him. Don't f*** around with positional needs at that point in a draft like this. Could be the difference between a good first line player and a superstar franchise player.

You need both. If you're focusing too much on team needs or some particular style predilection, you're going to end up picking inferior players. You must realize that to say "whether it is Grans or Schneider makes no difference" is f***ing insane. Forget about whether you agree with my assessment of the players, surely you understand that one is going to end up better than the other. Perhaps one ends up a top four defenseman and the other flops completely.

You don't address team needs or style preferences at the draft. You pick BPA, with some concessions to other factors when there's a close decision. By picking the best, most valuable players, you can later trade for needs or preferences.

Every team without fail says they pick the BPA. But I also understand that after a few players the draft turns out to be a crap shoot trying to determine what a player is going to be like in a number of yrs & whether a kid will be able to play in the NHL is an educated guess at best. There have been almost as many failures as there have been successes & they do the best they can with as much information as they have at there disposal. There are a number of players who are only incrementally different from each other, meaning just slightly & how do you judge chemistry & whether a player will fit into a team dynamic? You hope you pick the right one with the best information you have ... period.

A lot of people on here crapped all over PD for selecting Pintohigher than where he was ranked, was he the BPA? That seems to have been a good move now, but he also selected Lodin which seems to have been a wasted pick & way earlier than he was ranked. Mistakes & successes happen in ever draft for every team, a lot of people were against them selecting Tkachuk which has turned out to be great for the team. And every team has players ranked differently as well as a lot of sites, so exactly how does a casual fan know exactly whether a player is the BPA or not. You don't, we depend on the scouts to tell us that & the so called expert talking heads & we discuss whether we think they were right or not. And then we wait for the player to prove it one way or the other until they make it or not.

I'm not a professional scout as I doubt you are & I would like to see this team fill a number of holes including what I think they need, but it clearly doesn't mean that's what they will do. The players I choose are the kind of players I like & want to see on this team & I don't care about who people think might be the better player. The players I don't choose are usually the players I don't like or want on this team & it's usually the flash & dash players that others like. If there are two players who are very similar in a number of variables I like than it doesn't really matter which one they choose, hopefully it's the guy who turns out better. I like everything that I have read about Schneider, I have seen much less information regarding Hans, only that he is ranked lower in the 2nd rd on a few of the sites I have seen. Just because you think he is better doesn't make it so especially when I'm not sure what metrics you decide make him better. For example, I don't think they need another small offensive defenceman, we have enough of those IMO, they need a couple of big top 4 defencemen who are good at everything especially defensively to prevent goals against.

Maxim Beryozkin made his KHL debut today and he played 11:40. Beryozkin is an intriguing option in the middle rounds. He is listed at 6'2 201 lbs, he shoots right but plays both left wing and right wing. His MHL stats this season are 49 GP 23 G 29 A 52 PTS and he is plus 35. He is ranked 16th in the MHL for points, 20th for goals, 25th for assists and 19th for +/-.

Apparently Bergevin is the lonely one that have not talk to Lafrenière this year. I laugh if Montreal win the lottery and passed on Lafrenière

Blaine has been eliminated from the playoffs. I could see Richels falling in the draft a bit given the fact that his team didn't get an extended playoff run and his playoff stats weren't that good. Both him and Cole Hansen could still be good options in the mid to late rounds.

Grant Slukynsky had a goal and 2 assists in Warroad's 4-0 win over East Grand Forks in the playoffs. Slukynsky is now the leading point producer in the playoffs in USHS-MN, his stats are 3 GP 4 G 10 A 14 PTS

I've been able to watch most of Amirov's three VHL playoff games so far for Toros. When I get home from work after night shifts there's always European hockey to watch while I wind down before bed. I made note of some of his most impressive plays and went back and found the clips.

Amirov plays primarily right wing and is #27 in green/blue/white

Here's a nifty zone entry on the PP

Here on a set breakout on the PP Amirov is the designated puck carrier

Some of those slick edges along the boards

In the last game, his ice time was up to his VHL career high 17:06. They were down 1-0 and starting from about ten minutes left in the third, they started leaning on Amirov heavily to create offense, playing him almost every other shift. One of the things I've liked about Amirov is, like Raymond, at the pro level he plays it safe, doesn't try to do too much by himself, defers to his older teammates. But he does have a reputation for being clutch, and down a goal in the dying minutes of a playoff game, he wanted the puck and he wanted to make things happen, and he was forechecking like a demon to get the puck. They were ultimately unable to tie the game, but Amirov created a couple good chances, including one golden opportunity from the slot that was blocked.

I broke these up from the original post, as only three will show up embedded per post.

I really like this sequence: there's a battle for the puck behind his net, he identifies an opportunity, sweeps in, knocks the puck loose, drags it around the net, and slips a couple forecheckers for the zone exit and entry

Starts with a good backcheck, then creates a couple chances with a nice skill play and then a good forecheck

Finds a nice seam pass for a good scoring chance

Pick our top 2 rated guys in the top round, I feel more comfortable taking Drysdale now with the extra 1st, with more high end forwards available mid late 1st than D.

3rd-4th - Stutzle/Raymond
5th-9th- Holtz/Perfetti/Drysdale/Rossi/Lundell
16th-23rd - Mysak/Amirov/Bourque/Wallinder
33th-35th - Brisson/Villeneuve/Reichel/Guhle
you hearing if were super interested a guy? I know you mentioned bourque
