Which you would have hoped that they would try to trade a couple of them for 1 better one. Buildling through the draft is based on quality. If you can't rack 15 picks every year, transform those 15 in 7. By moving up while trading quantity.
Bergevin's reply. It's hard to make those trades. You need a dance partner. This is not Sony Playstation.
Do you need any more cliched excuses?

So how do you draft guys rank the Habs draft?

B- for me.

1. Would have preferred someone different than Guhle in the first.
2. I don't like trading away our 2nd in that spot because of who was still on the board.
3. I wasn't as high on Luke Tuch as others but like Guhle, I get the pick and I like the dimensions they bring, I just like a higher upside.
4. There are some unknowns in the group that I need to see more and hear more about.
5. Probably passed on some better talents for guys with more decision making time.

Positives is that we got Mysak and gambled on some guys in Biondi and Farrell.

I would give it a B.

I like the first 3 picks, and I think that there are a couple of homerun picks in the later rounds (Farrell, Biondi). I would have preferred that he kept some of his picks, but overall I would say it's a decent draft.

We had the 2nd 7th rounder this year and next season Seattle will be picking, so not only are we delaying our selection, but we are 100% sure to get a lower selection. And don't start arguing that they had no one on their radar and maybe next season there be something better available, they have 11 selections between the 3rd and 7th round next season, how many great late rounders are they projecting for next season. And it isn't great to have too many picks concentrated on the same year because of the contracts limit. Absolute Bergevin nonsense special.

He's gonna do the same thing every year, man.

He will never trade up.
He will do some goon trade down scenario with a high value pick.
He will trade picks out from the current year for a future year.

I was underwhelmed with the first round because I was hoping one of the sexier prospects would fall but that did not happen... Mysak in the second was a nice surprise since I did not expect him to still be available. Really hope the kid pans out because he would help our anemic offense... we need more offensive prospects in the pipeline.

Surprised Hlavaj didn't get picked this year and same with Gogolev.

Glotzl is the only first year eligible I'm surprised didn't go.

Same for me. Would love for Montreal to give him an AHL invite. Hopefully Cam Hillis can help in that regards.

One thing to note is COVID derailed our European combine and likely ruined the finishing touches on our end-of-year scouting. We had about 5 months of scouting done for this draft and maybe our scouts didn't trust their own opinions going into this one. Could be why we dealt a bunch of picks for future picks. It fits the theme of us mostly going for safe, projectable, and well known prospects.

Sure but there's more then one way to "build through the draft".

So it's as much about quantity as it is quality, at least that's how I see it.

Every draft pick isn't necessarily earmarked for the team to draft.

Carolina basically did what I wanted us to do and took as many shots as they could at finding the next Point/Panarin type.

Florida’s group also looks solid. Benning in the 4th will help someone get a promotion down the road - won’t say book it, but I have a very strong feeling that he’ll outperform his draft slot.

We did exactly what I expected, so I’m feeling less shock and awe and more so disappointed parent. Hopefully some of them pan out. I will say - Guhle is and will continue to be the superior player to Schneider, so I’m glad we didn’t eat that bullet. /meh

Not a sexy draft as far as getting highly touted prospects… which obviously means nothing in regard to their value down the line! Still, I'm jealous of Carolina (and obviously Ottawa—their six picks in the top two round may end up being a heist). The 7th round had a few interesting low-cost gambits.

FWIW, of the 126 names on my list, 15 didn't get drafted. In a few cases, that was as expected, but I'm just a bit more surprised by my two top-90 leftovers, Rashevsky and Sedoff. But that's the draft.

Wow. Obviously he's doing this against weaker competition but the power and skill does remind me a little of Kovalev. Like this pick, he certainly has at least 1 NHL level tool. Plus he's 19 years old, 6ft1 194lbs, adding something you can't teach. Solid prospect.
