No move is ever a sure thing, but keep in mind that the move you're balking at there done in 2017 gets you Elias Pettersson.

Which, if memory serves, is something the Rangers definitely explored.

Both 1sts to move up in 2017 makes at least some sense considering it's moving into the top 5.

Both 1sts to move up from 13 to 11 is just silly

If you look at draft pick value charts, generally 13+23 is equal to something in the 6th-to-8th pick range. THAT is a trade i'm (more) comfortable making. Not some silliness like 13+23 for 11.

It would depend on who's sitting there at 10/11.

If Holtz is sliding, I'd probably grit my teeth and trade both firsts

If it's Sanderson for example, ehh not so much. I'd rather take a swing with both firsts

How do teams like Chicago and Pittsburgh do it?

I have no idea why we wouldn’t want the problem of having two top center options. We are discussing paying Strome $5m this offseason, I think we’d find a way to survive paying Barkov $6m.

But again, these are hypotheticals. Obviously what I’m advocating is a move that fits the team long term (I would disagree that there can be no long term option that fits if he comes with salary, it’s just a matter of finding the best player who makes you want to deal away Strome and/or Buch).

If we want to trade up to “develop our own #2 center,” I’m also fine with that. But again, I don’t think the right move is to sit at 13 and try to find that player there.

When was the last time Chicago and Pittsburgh were good enough to go far in the playoffs? Early 2010's and mid 2010's? Pittsburgh had the luck of drafting and growing two superstar centers and Chicago, honestly, had solid depth all-around. It all depends on systems and cap.

Strome was on the brink of not having an NHL career until he was moved to NYR. Of course playing with Panarin will build more offense, but he proved that the year prior with 19 goals (18 with the Rangers). He's a fine option at No. 2, has shown chemistry with wingers and is entering his prime.

That's another thing, why do the Rangers need to move them? It's not like they're abysmal players and you're not moving components of the roster to move up in the draft. This team is on the brink of continuous contention and they are a part of the big picture. You really only move them for a significant upgrade or a sell off for picks and draft capital.

And the draft is a crapshoot. Barzal was taken in 16th overall and is a No. 1 center. Chytil is still incredibly young and has the potential to still be a No. 2 center. There's also free agency if NYR needs a No. 2. There are better options than just trading Buch/Strome.

I like Lundell, not sure I like him enough to give up another 1st round prospect though

I will say the Rangers are supposedly very high on him. Supposedly they love the upside and also think he’s a kid who has a shot to step into the lineup as early as next season.

Do they love that at the cost of two firsts? Unknown.

But I think Lundell is on a short list of players who would get consideration.

I haven’t begun to look into this draft yet. Been a crazy year so far for obvious reasons. From what I’m reading there are a couple of good defensemen but not much after that people here love. Who are the d-men that could throw a wrench in all of these projections? We know teams will look at a d-man in lieu of one of the better forwards and possibly push someone down.

Do you think Sanderson is on that list of players they would move up for? Just curious

I think he's gonna go in the top 10, so if they want him, they'll have to move up

Drysdale is the best in this draft IMO, he'll go top 3/5. Sanderson is probably going to go top 10, which could push a good forward out of the top 10

After that, I've read from a couple Athletic articles that some teams really like Kaiden Guhle, and some of them have him ranked as the second best D-man after Drysdale.

After those guys it's kinda a mixed bag all over the place

While I’m not necessarily advocating for moving up to get Lundell, it would be interesting if the Rangers did and he was on the opening night roster. Essentially it would be an alternate path to their 2019 draft idea for grabbing a center and having him step in a year later (2020).

I can't wait for this fanbase crying over picking another European player in the top-10 again

I agree but I think @mschmidt64 is saying that we might have a chance to do something special based on the unique situation in which the league and the world find themselves now.
If a team finds itself needing to lose someone good, maybe a Trouba situation. Maybe a cap situation. An expansion draft situation, maybe. Some combination. JG may have the most resources to take that home run swing.

I think that's a lot of wishful thinking, though. In an expansion scenario, it wouldn't matter much because it frees up a spot for a younger player to come in (depending on the package). But again, the Rangers are in a fine position when it comes down to their core protection (minus someone like Fast, Howden, Gauthier or Hajek). They won't be losing anyone of significance except for Fast, IMO, or the potential in Gauthier or Hajek.
