Yeah, but that was with a full season in the books with no potential 24-team playoff format. This is unusual to put it lightly. Hoping the league determines a format that isn't going to f*** the Rangers postseason run or chance at the top 7.

I mean, you'd think the league'd just make the Rangers the 7th pick if they go with the 24 team playoffs. Like, it's not f***ing rocket science. But the NHL will find a way to screw us over anyway.

Brooks actually nailed this in his column yesterday. If there’s going to be an “in season” draft, than let’s make sure the playoff format matches the draft format. If it is going to be 4 Divisons X 6 Teams, then the resulting lottery starts with seven teams. If 16 teams make t(e playoffs, fine, stack the lottery accordingly. And if they are going to 82 games, fine, getting the 13th pick may turn out to be a very good thing.

i fail to see what the nhl gains by rushing the draft...no matter what they do they are guaranteed to look like morons and fans of 26-28 teams will hate it. and there is no possible why they will make much $$ on it. if they think people will watch like the nfl draft they are out of their minds.

of all the decisions they have to make coming out of quarantine, the draft is by far the least important which is why I 100% believe the league is focusing on that.

I’m with you. I think they may come to their senses. I think they may put all their efforts into trying to salvage the season. There is no scenario that is gonna make everyone happy if they do the draft before completing the season. And like you said are they really gonna make that much money from having the draft in 4-5 weeks? Would Canada tv pull in that much money? 99 percent of American sports watchers couldn’t even name 1 prospect in this draft.

This is about money? I really can't see why that would be. Seems like it would make a lot more sense to just hold the draft in July or August after the playoffs are determined.

I honestly hope there's justice in either case; a chance for the top 7 or a playoff push. If they go in the playoffs then IDC what they do with the early draft selection spot. It's only if they don't make it or have a chance to make it and still end up at No. 13/14.

Who knows, though? I've heard of sudden death scenarios, too, to determine the Wild Card spots....

I feel that most Americans don't even know 5 NHL teams let alone prospects, lolol....

I think that is a side motive. I really don't think the NHL is salivating at the potential viewing capacity of the draft. There's got to be something else....

Lol. I meant American sports watchers but probably not much better.

2 years ago, every Rangers fan at the draft in Dallas knew 2-3 names. Dahlin, Svechnikov and Wahlstrom. The first two because they were talked about at length, and Wahlstrom because Larry Brooks mentioned him in several articles. That's the extent to what the average fan knows about the draft.

And these were fans who actually paid money to sit in the arena to watch the draft.

Who is paying money? Tickets for the draft were free in Dallas.

From the perspective of teams like the Sabres and Ducks--if it turns into a 7 team lottery and a 24 team playoff it's not doing them any favors really either. They're not going to last in the playoffs and they're going to lose draft positioning.

Personally I think the NHL should just shitcan this year. Take the results they already have and apply them to draft positioning and if you want to forget about the lottery--fine. There are just two many unknown factors and really there would have to be some coordination between the United States and Canada to make it happen and the way the countries have gone about handling this virus is night and day and no matter what you do multiple teams are going to come out of it with some major legitimate gripe about the fairness of how it's done. There's no way the end result isn't going to be seen as tainted in some way by the majority of fans and probably even players, staff and owners.

Yeah I really think the best option is to just shut it down. I understand the money that's on the line here, but I just haven't heard anything that's realistic, fair, and not totally insane. Shut it down and move on.

Unfortunately, this will probably the best outcome for everyone.

yep. at this point, anything they come up with is going to seem like a half-assed measure. People will forever call the cup winner tainted, the draft tainted, etc... just toss this season, start on regular schedule for 2020-21, including a July draft based on win% (to account for uneven # of games played).

Its already May. Everyone but the die-hards have forgotten about hockey as the summer is emerging.

Well, I will commend the league trying for a playoffs with a suitable winner. We all know the situation is already f***ed so labeling it as tainted or unacceptable is just the reality. If they continue the season and draft, it just needs to make sense for all teams, players and personnel. Unfortunately, like most have mentioned, ending the season now and starting the offseason on time is probably the best and easiest way to solve this (minus the financial side of things).

Not to get me wrong--the distraction of watching live hockey would be nice but it would be weird as f***. Empty arenas--the players will have to be sequestered--be able to travel to the one, two, three, four locations to be played. Travel would have to be absolutely minimized. If a player got sick and the virus went through a team--what do they do?--drop out? or does the entire thing get shut down again. I really don't know what the owner's have in mind for revenues either. People who have just lost their jobs aren't likely to be shelling out a lot to pay to watch. If you're also having the league step in with these arbitrary rulings like top 6 teams in each division and moving up the draft and basically the idea has always been non-playoff teams draft picks come before playoff teams there are going to be plenty of reasons to pitch a bitch.

Yeah, I agree. The whole thing would be weird, and I just can't see anything that would be fair--in terms of who's in, who's out, the impact on draft position, fair to the players, and so on. I would absolutely LOVE to wake up tomorrow and see that some miracle solution has been proposed, but we know that's not going to happen.

I'm more interested in making sure next season is as normal as possible. Of course I don't have millions of dollars at stake, but still.

Whether fans will be able to attend is a big question because then revenues and contracts might become major issues. Some owner's might be okay with bankrolling their team for a year (I would think Dolan might be one) but I don't think a lot of them will. It's going to be touch and go. It's another reason why we don't need a second wave of this shit. Things seem to be going a bit better here in New York though. That said other states it seems to be getting worse.

Hope we trade up for Sanderson. Would trade both 1sts to secure him. As of now, my draft board looks like

LaF
Byfield
Stutzle
Perfetti
Rossi
Lundell
Sanderson
Holtz
Raymond
Mercer
Khusnutdinov
Colangelo
Neighbours
